Sweet looking and sounding Mandolin. I see a lot of their ads, and I don't doubt for a minute they're beautiful playing and sounding. I know I would enjoy them.
I know you've got a long tie to Virginia, where you've grown up, and I love that you've found local luthiers like Showalter Guitars. So cool to get that local custom made instrument.
So my mandolins are a Mid-Missouri and a Big Muddy, both made in the state I've grown up in, Missouri. It's cool to have custom hand built, local instruments. Mine are both flat top with round sound hole instruments and I love how both play. Beautiful sounding and great playing. The Big Muddy is an all mahogany instrument, and the other is a Maple and Spruce top, with round sound holes.
Then I actually got a kit from a guy in West Virginia to build an octave mandolin. It was an incredible learning experience (with a few mistakes I don't like to admit). It's walnut, with maple binding, and a redwood top, round sound hole. It's really fun. So those are my mandolins. I'm probably not nearly as good as you on either guitar or mandolin, but I enjoy playing both. And having played violin when growing up, it was an interesting transition into the mandolin.
    Enjoy your Northfield!

Yes, mandolin has the same tuning as a fiddle that I learned awhile back. That one sounds better than my Eastman 305, but I'm still learning. I put aside the fiddle because I couldn't lead singing while playing. So I went back to guitar. Mandolin, maybe, someday.

Totally nice Mandolin. Your experience reminds me of picking up a cheaper uke that someone gave me. Believe it or not, it helped me with finger style on guitar - which I had already resolved to never be able to do after attempting it for over a year. Having two less strings to contend with got my fingers plucking. Before I knew it, I was suddenly able to play two finger style songs on guitar. Go figure! It’s also fun to play in the middle of the night without disturbing my upstairs neighbors because it’s much quieter- and it also challenges me to think differently with the standard uke tuning. I would love to try bass guitar sometime. Banjo and mandolin are also very appealing. All stringed instruments share some similarities, but the differences in techniques, number of strings, a variety of tunings, and even the type/gauges of strings will push you to become a better guitarist. I agree with Jeremy, try any other stringed instrument if things are getting stale or you’re struggling with something on guitar! Plus, then you can call yourself a multi-instrumentalist! 😂😂😂

Great mandolins, regardless of if they’re assembled in China. I had a NF-F5S for a short while that was very nice, but recently upgraded to a Collings MF5. I don’t consider myself a mandolin player, but I agree that they’re great for getting yourself out of a rut and are so fun to play. I can go through long periods where I won’t pick up a guitar for weeks because I’m loving the mandolin so much.

I thought all Northfields were US made, especially given the prices of them.

Some are but some are assembled in China. Kind've news to me, not a ton of info about the process.

These days I think it’s safe to assume any mandolin is made in China regardless of the price until you specifically find out otherwise. Companies both large and small have become far less open and honest about where their products are made.
Believe it or not, some people even question whether Gibson mandolins are still made in the US. I had a Gibson dealer tell me that they were made in Nashville at the Gibson Garage, but I’m not sure that I believe that dealer. I do think that are still US made though.

The Gibson garage is a commercial space in downtown Nashville. So there's a 0% chance that's true. They do have a shop in Nashville though.

I know exactly what and where the Gibson Garage is located although I’ve never been inside to see for myself. I’m also well aware of the Gibson factory in Nashville. I don’t believe that they are building any instruments at the Gibson Garage either.
That being said, I’m almost 100% positive that at the time of the Nashville Flood 12 or 13 years (where a lot of guitars, amps, and other gear got destroyed) Gibson was building mandolins at their retail space in Opry Mills Mall which was also heavily damaged by the flood.
