ok... and now i'll take this TO A VERY VERY VER SPECIFIC LEVEL, ok
because i think it deserves it
      let's talk facts
FACT - He was there, i don't think anyone can or should question that
FACT - He's a car guy, ok, fair enough, let's give that a degree of respect as well
FACT - There is no such thing as a MUT OF ORANGE, but i'll explain that later
FACT - YEAH SURE... if they threw a few colours they had in the workshop together and then THAT, was the original colour of the general lee, then... so be it
But.. this needs to be understood as well...
when you research Colours and Colour Gamut's and colour codes and how the frequency of colour works, you start to understand that ....
When you mix any two different colours or any amount of different colours, YOU WILL END UP WITH A DIFFERENT COLOUR from the one you started with
      THIS IS NOT A MUT
      it's just another colour
now... the name of the colour is irrelevant , what is important is HOW THAT COLOUR WAS MADE UP
and the way you can tell is BY USING A SPECTROPHOTOMETER (in simple terms, an analyzer that analyzes the make up of what colour or colours has gone into a mix IN WHAT RATIO'S To make up the existing colour you are analzying
SO.. why doesn't someone just get an original General Lee and take a Spectrophotometer to it and instead of fucking around with what the name was
WHY DON'T YOU ALL JUST FUCKING FIGURE OUT THE RATIO'S OF ALL THE ORANGE'S THAT WERE PUT TOGETHER AND THEN CALL THAT COLOUR.... GENERAL LEE ORANGE
      how fucking hard is that
The ratio's of one colour to another are important, not the name.
      because
      let's take blue for example
you can go to ford (for example) and they have a colour that is called BLUE and it's made up of this and that in whatever ratio of one to another
then you can go to holden and they have BLUE but holden's blue is not the same ratio mix of one blue to another or white or whatever
so... the name doesn't really matter , the name just assigns a name to an existing mix or ratio combination of colours
SINCE WE DON'T KNOW THE RATIO, the name is irrelevant
      like i said
GET A SPECTROPHOTOMETER on an original general lee (which would be the hard part, i would imagine) and then.. to be really fucking accurate, you have to account for wear and fade of the paint over 40 years
but... let's just say that someone from the crew in the pain shop had a can left over with a bit of ORIGINAL GENERAL LEE PAINT left in the can from 40 years ago
i reckon you could take a reading from that and establish the exact colour of what was used on the general lee
then from that.. RECORD THE COLOURS AND THE RATIO'S AND GIVE IT A NAME
call it GENERAL LEE 01 for all we care, it doesn't matter
so.. that's what needs to be done
i'm not questioning john in any way, i'm just saying a colour is not a mut,
if you made a new colour then you need to know the ratio's
HOWEVER.. IF THEY DON'T KNOW, THEN......
Given we've had crashes and 40 years of fading
i suppose... the ABSOLUTE EXACT COLOUR is then lost forever and all you can do is do your best to get an exact match, as close as you can
      that's all you can do

So apparently someone had the original trunk lid, that had been stored indoors.
And they had the color scanned with the spectrometer or whatever.
The name of the color that came back to be an exact match was "TnT express.". Which is a color used by a foreign auto manufacturer for vans.
Not saying they ordered tnt express and painted that color...I'm saying that they scanned the new color they created, and found an existing exact match.
So someone wanting their car painted that now, could look up tnt express and find the ratios of everything.
Still might not be "exact", as they scanned 40 year old paint....but that's as close as we're gonna get

He sat me in your lap, John Schneider, and I remember I was in an aggravated mood from being on the road so long. You bounced me a couple times on your knee and said something that made my day. You told me that the studio had candy and I would get a great treat if I could calm down for the photos. Thank you! Now I have great memories of the chocolate bar that I got afterward, but my greatest memory of all is the one of me looking slightly distraught as I sat on the knee of the one who is now one of my favorite classic TV show stars. I have, at least, the first season of The Dukes Of Hazzard on DVD!
I watched the episode, and I believe it was the first episode, where they “painted” the General Lee in Cooter’s garage and in that episode they mixed the paint for the General Lee in that very manner, every color they had on hand to come up with an orange color cause they needed two full gallons of automotive paint to cover the General Lee and Cooter didn’t have two full gallons in his garage!!!
Now, I’m sure that was done specifically for that episode and that to real General Lee had already been painted before it was unveiled on TV in that episode, cause I know that you can’t paint a car overnight and have it ready to roll out of the paint booth in under 24hrs!
In most cases it takes a solid week for the paint to fully cure before it can be wet sanded and buffed out!

Or do I "search the world over" (righteous Hee-Haw reference) for another 1/25 scale model kit to be done in Confederate Gray? I can live with only the red striped Batmobile. Mr. Schneider I am so happy to see you an this great channel!
I am italian and I was born in 1977, I was 1 when you and all the great cast started in Georgia to write this wonderful story still in our hearts after 42 years of love and fun. Even if I was just 1 when Dukes of Hazzard started, (sorry for my English, not perfect) I can say I was "there" when the serial came in Italy for the first time.
During the late 70's in Italy we had national channels only, with very few serial and movies from other countries (the truth, my parents say that was quite boring haha).
In the beginning of 80's we saw the birth of the first private channels and the serials from US came all together... for this reason, as italian boy I can say that DoH story for us started (I think, more or less...) in 1981-82.
I was 4-5 y.o. and my beloved grandma who passed away 3 years ago always said the first word I learned to read was "Hazzard" on the TV magazines when I was looking for channel and time.
The italian title was just "Hazzard", without "Dukes of", and we had an italian song as opening theme, some years ... not all seasons, sometimes we had "Good ole boys" and sometimes the Italian song "La ballata di Bo e Luke" (Bo e Luke's Ballade).
So many memories of these afternoon with grandma watching DoH together jn my grandma's living room. I miss her.
DoH is still here, like the very first day.
Still watching every morning on TV while I have breakfast before work (even if I have all the DVD series, I love to watch on tv when possible... today was "Sadie Hogg" episode, my coffee was ready while you and Tom were coming from the corner with GL to pick up Uncle Jesse and Daisy running away from Mrs. Tizdale, and you parked GL sliding - bump! - with right wheel on the sidewalk, and then run away with Cathy on your legs and Denver with only his legs into the passenger window... was drinking my coffee and I said oohoh oh Denver be careful!!
I wish I can post a picture here, because while you were talking about the first commercial pictures on this video, the GL with open doors and without O1, was watching a picture I have on my wall at left of computer, because is exactly one of those pictures, with Cathy on the roof and the right door open!
Take care Mr. Schneider, a big hug from a big italian fan!! Hope one day you will travel to Italy and I will meet you!

I am a country boy from western NC .l always was Bo Duke jumping my bicycle and anything else with wheels. The Dukes of Hazzard was a big part of my life. Thanks for standing up to these liberals over the General Lee. God bless you. Big fan. ps l just subscribed.

Know this a year old video, but just wanted to say it's always great watching you and hearing what you have to say, John! Just recently bought your book (and Cooter's, too) and got into collecting General's and Duke Merchandise...will have to check on that revised edition, because, I think, we all would love that. Gotta keep the facts straight! Love ya, man! And nobody...I repeat, NOBODY...Yee-Haw's better than you (as you already know, lol)!

The original car and the first one that was painted with the flag and the 01 was painted with a mix of various tones of orange, as John said here. Later on, that car was painted green with a 71 on the side, to look like a wrecked racecar and cut some costs. But after the first jump, when the car was still orange, the trunk lid was removed and was taken to a body shop, where it stayed indoors and protected from the outside elements (Therefore maintaining the original shade of orange). Then, in the early 00' a couple of guys found that trunk lid and digitally scanned it to reveal the original color. That color is called TnT Express orange, and the color code is #f66600. That is the exact shade of orange the first General Lee ever was painted with. Now, the color is called TnT Express because it happens to be the characteristic color of a shipping company (Like UPS or FedEx) called TnT Express. And ALL of their trucks are painted in that exact shade of orange. And that's all i remember and know.

Supposedly, the 1st car's trunk lid was intact and still wore the original paint color, along with the red white and blue, and was matched. There is now a name for the orange, even if there was not originally. There is some information over on VINWiki about car 1 and the trunk lid.

It was the PERFECT color for making it the focal point of the show, extremely easy to be spotted in every frame of the show. Any other color would not have shown up so great in the scenes as a contrast to natures colors. Absolutely beautiful car!! Awesome ending to this video John!!!

I just watched a "VIN-Wiki" video where Travis Bell said they found the trunk lid off the first General Lee hanging in Henry Holman's Georgia body shop and they took it to get it scanned with the 3M paint matching gizmo and it matched it to a color called "TnT Orange" after a European or Australian trucking company called TnT (it also could be "T and T")that uses an orange paint on their corporate trucks. My buddy Trevor (Trevor in the 80's RUclips channel) had his second General painted '76 Corvette Flame Red and it looked very close. In fact, when you and Travis Bell turned right to merge onto the town square in Covington for the Lee-1 reveal many years ago,you stopped at the rear of Trevor's car where I was standing and yelled "Nice car!" Trevor was walking up and caught it on video. That was a great day!

I never believed it was Corvette red, the truth is very fitting though. Just like how Petty Blue was made. I'm a second generation fan, my dad had a ton of episodes on VHS and we watched them together all the time. When I got old enough to drive we looked far and wide for a 68-70 Charger in our price range to fix up but never found one. Instead I ended up with a 68 Satellite and its been my main set of wheels for ten years now. Even had it off the ground a couple times but never more than a few inches because it won't fix itself between scenes like the General LoL Thanks for everything!

Heh, when I started building the plastic AMT and Revell models of the General Lee (swapping parts here and there for accuracy) I ended up painting it whatever oranges I could find. There's even a bit of red mixed in mine if I remember. When you build the real ones, is there a certain type of Orange you prefer?

John I believe this 110%. Nobody thought the show was going to amount to anything so it just makes sense that using the paint you had on the shelf was what happened. And this was 3 years ago but I just watched last week on youtube a guy saying that it was a certain color. Just like he was there. He had a video of him purchasing the NO. 1 general Lee from a scrap yard on a mans property. Forget what color he said it was but I believe the color he was referring to is the color that was made once the show took off and they realized "Heh we are gonna need to have some more cars. thus, the paint code was born! but I know you are dead on on the original color. Thanks for clearing it up. Always enjoy listening to you.

I adored Bo Duke so much as a child my imaginary friend was Bo Duke... We spent a lot of time under my bed drinking orange juice and playing with my Dukes of Hazzard toys... When he left he moved to Florida to make orange juice... And I proceeded to name all my baby dolls Bo Duke for at least a month until my sister renamed them... Then I had a real baby while watching the Dukes in the delivery room and my mom said you may as well name him the same as you did your dolls so now I have Bo Lee Duke for a son and I have his social security card and birth certificate to prove it... And ironically he is in Forsyth, Georgia right now at work as a lineman... When I go down to visit him we're going to Hazzard and the Whistle Stop Cafe and Shiloh... I still love this show and I really do think you are an amazing guy. Keep on keeping on... God bless and good fortune.

Funny watching this after VinWikis newest video with Travis Bell, and even funnier reading the comments arguing about the shade of colour that it is. Despite the GL being a mix of orange paints, it does come up with an actual code when scanned, and that is the colour that TNT Express (a Dutch shipping company) uses on their fleet vehicles. I do not doubt any of what Schneider says, but we now can match up the OG paint with a paint that is still currently produced.
