They were designed with slightly bigger engines in mind, but that engine never came (at least not in time, PW1000G is way too late), so they kinda have to use CFM56 instead.
think i read somewhere and correct me if i am wrong that Airbus had planned to use bigger engines on the plane, engines were newer but ultimately never built which led Airbus to use the smaller engines
Late 90s v early 200s always preferred the quieter (more soothing frequencies?) A340-400 over the 747-400s from London to HK. And four engines - more reassuring to me at least
Hi, I have actually, I flew one when I was 7 years old from MRU to PER, it's a nice aircraft I think and later in 2011 I flew on my first A340-500 from SEZ-DXB-SEZ, it was also when I boarded my first A380 from DXB -LHR. I know totally different variat the 300 and 500 and different engines too, the 500 being bigger, but I still love it and still do. I also enjoyed seeing Edelweiss operate their here in SEZ.
The A340-300 engines aren't just *similar* to those on the 737 and A320, they're the SAME engine! Thankfully, the A340-500 and -600 got Trent 500 series engines.
The main reason behind the 4 engiens was due to the rules in place back when the A340 was in development and started manufacturing. A plane was required to have 4 engines for redundancy reasons if they were to fly over large bodies of water such as the Pacific or Atlantic. Almost as soon as the A340 entered service the rules were changed for economy reasons. And the reasons why the engines are so small is because the technology of the engines they wanted wasn't put into a final commercial product until in the mid 2000s, nearly 20 years after the A340 entered service so they had to use what was available and would fit. The A340-500 and A340-600 has much more powerful engines, nearly equal to the Boeing 747. Its max take off weight is also nearly on par with the 747 family. It actually has slightly longer range than the 747s, too.

Hahahah, good one!

The -500 and -600 had bigger engines though.
Yea lol
And those variants were quite long

Read that the A340's wings are high enough above the ground to even accommodate GE90s

It's not the size of the engine, it's what you do with it 😅
That's what people with little ones say

I always found the A340 to be reminiscent of the DC-8 or 707. It was nice, but I don't think I have ever seen one in person.
It was literally designed to replace the DC-8/707...
Replaced the A300@@ryanjonathanmartin3933

The story is kinda right but the PW1000G had nothing to do with it.
yeah it was the same technology but nothing like that engine. @@kingsharkoon
Using CFM56 would also increase parts commonality between the A340 & A320
Those blow dryers with their buzzsaw sound are unmistakable🤣
You missed details on regulatory chances, in which A340 was trapped in...

Fun fact:
The A340 came too late.
The A330 came too early.
yes
Stop roasting the A340
Yes and no!
How was the A330 too early? If it had come any later, Boeing would have definitely received even more orders for the 777-200!
That's what he said?

A340-400?!
The little engines that couldn't !!

Where is SEZ ?
short answer: they needed 4 engines but wanted 2 engines so they added small engines
might be wrong
You are wrong. 🤭

Lmao
Love the 340.
Wish you’d mentioned the specific engine availability / commonality, or ETOPS then and since.
Beautiful video, very informative…

Nice. Got shares in RR
But tha maintenance on 4 engines is gonna be almost double of not more than

No matter what people what say about the Airbus A340, the A340 is one of my favorite aircraft.
Agree
I always thought the A340 kinda looked like the old school Boieng 707.
The -600 is my only favorite bus
The victim of ETOPS-120
retrofit with larger engines ??
Why? Airplane works fine with the engines it has.
The A340-500/-600 has bigger engines. But Airbus isn't going to make another A340 variant.
cost of engine replacement and passing regulation is comparable with that of building a new plane from scratch.
2:03 they are the A320 engines
The wing will be overloaded to hung bigger engine.they can do it but need re engineering and approval or re certification.
Chiquito pero picoso
Strange but I saw this 3-4 weeks ago. I thought it was on this channel but I guess not..?
There's so many videos with this title on every aviation channel.
It feels illegal to like the a340-200/-300 😅😅 although the -500/-600 are pretty too
✈️
Because their pilots have small hands
All planes should be 747s and I don't care.
Because it doesn't need bigger engines
Why does the BAE Avro have four engines?
because it was meant to operate out of smaller airports, so 4 engines would allow that easier
They borrowed them from the 737
So they put 4 engines because of ETOPS regulations by that time?
Yes. Then Etops changed & made the 340 less necessary.
Such trash hair dryer engines. 😂😂😂
They're small. But Airbus knows what they're doing absolutely.

Because of the changes to ETOPS in 2007?
No, etops have been extended since 1995.
So in that moment a340 is strangulated by twins engine projects
because they are low bypass turbofans. you are welcome.
Dafuq. That's so wrong 😂
@@kingsharkoon no, he's right 😁 CFM56-5C has bypass ratio of 6.4-6.5, compare to GE90-115B of 9, so definitely "lower bypass" turbofans 😅
