Sometimes I forget how suddenly that form of comfort that he's had from birth was just taken away. While his dad still gives him carrier snuggles when he's home, I'm the primary caregiver and have been since birth. My son is used to babywearing snuggles and was still relatively young when they just ended suddenly due to complications in my pregnancy.
For the first two to three years of life, my kids have had a lot of cuddles in the carrier. It's been there safe place when they are scared or upset and it provides a unique form of vestibular (movement) and proprioceptive (body position) stimulation which can be incredibly calming for their bodies. It is one tool that I have utilized in co-regulation and it was taken very quickly and suddenly for my son. Usually, it's been a much slower process. We've had multiple illnesses that I normally would have worn through with him, and instead I wasn't able to provide that exact same experience. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with not, there are some people and children who don't want to or can't and there are so many other ways to provide comfort- just thought it was a primary form for us and it went away suddenly.
When I brought out a carrier and demo doll this morning to do a quick video, my son initially saw the carrier and thought I was giving him some cuddles in it. He was so excited and then got really upset when he learned that it wasn't for him. So, I decided we would try it out on the couch. I kept it very loose so he could sit on my lap instead of my belly and I also messed up when putting it on and caught his leg. It's amazing though to be about to capture small moments and remember that even at two- there's something unique about the snuggles in the carrier and it's something that he still craves- Even though he snuggles with me for a good portion of the night, we have hugs and cuddles on the ground and couch, etc.
I'm also trying to remember that pregnancy is a big change! Not just for me, but also for them. There is confusion about what is to come (especially for my youngest who hasn't experienced a new baby) and also just changes in how we are able to interact.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I wore my daughter probably every day for her first 18 months but just kind of slowly stopped when it started to feel too heavy. I’m just behind you in pregnancy now, at 18 weeks. I miss carrying her.. I’m going to try this couch snuggle today! 🤍 Wishing you the best, and was so happy to read recently that your body is healing itself well for this pregnancy!
