Through Winter I have had several storms and am facing another windy baclony garden season. Take a look at this brand new video showing more windy garden struggles and how I now cope with my windy balcony garden. ruclips.net/video/Lx8kHbJv0wY/видео.html
I feel you man. I’m not quite as high up but it’s so difficult gardening on the balcony in the UK with the wind being absolutely full blast all the time
Right?? The worst is when it seems normal on the ground level but you get up to your flat and it's like a wind tunnel. So stressful. I have learned to go for plants with smaller leaves as they don't tend to parachute down the garden or suffer too much from wind burn. I will do an updated video on windy balcony tips I've picked up over the past 2 years if that's any help?
I feel your pain.. same thing here😭. I'm so saltyy at the moment my balcony garden could be planted 2weeks ago but the wind does not stop blowing hard! And my Plants can't wait any longer to go out! I'ts crazyy because you posted just in the right timing. Eventhough things are knocked over i really got inspired by seeing how much plants you still have outdoor and your on 13th floor😲👍🏾 I have so much Respect for you! That smile in the end was it for me. Im glad that most of them made it.🤗💚
Thank you so much for sharing your story too! ❤ it's hard to keep the smile sometimes but times like this I realized I can't control these things. But it's so nice to know others are feeling the same! I see it as a plus.. your babies will have well established root systems so by the time they go out they will survive a lot better if you end up in sudden heat wave! ❤ honest comments like yours inspire me to keep going so thank you 🥰
Thank you for sharing this. I have the same frustration in my windy back yard in San Francisco. It’s a ground level garden but it’s so windy and the soil is sandy so soil whips around when the wind gets going, adding insult to injury. The wind is inescapable I haven’t figured out what to do with the yard.
Honestly! The struggle is real! All these picture perfect balconies and gardens on this app and no one keeps it real or shows the dramas we go through on our windy balconies! So glad you found me! ❤
My heart sunk when I saw the greenhouse on the ground 💔 We get Arctic winds so I also shuffle pots in and out constantly. Over the last couple of years I've learnt that each time I lost a plant it created an opportunity to try a new idea and it actually improved the garden in the long run. Still feels disheartening at the time
aaaaargh, I love how vulnerable you were in this video. You are so incredibly relatable. I'm starting to make content in a very different area but I am having the exact same issues. It's really scary to not be perfect but its also very real. Thank you for showing me what great content I can make if I keep pushing myself
Thank you for being so real. Wow, what an exposed space! So sad for you and the loss of your plants etc. Love your determination and the sharing of your inspiration and experience.
Thank you so much for watching. I don't want to encourage people to garden, have a disaster and think they have done something wrong. Sometimes.. nature just is what is. Move on and try again! ❤
Thank you so much for making this video! I have been having a hard time keeping my plants happy with the dry wind in Las Vegas and my patio garden for several months now. I’ve had to nearly bring our whole patio garden inside lol. Hopefully I can start phasing them out before the summer heat sets in. This is such a good reminder to not give up! Just what I needed to see today. So happy your garden was able to bounce back! Sending love✨🙏🏻♥️
Gardening can be frustrating sometimes because it's normally things beyond our control like the weather, nature etc. disrupting our plans. But don't give up.. things will definitely turn around! Good luck with your patio garden! ❤❤ Ps: If you feel up for it, I'm sure everyone in our FB group would love to see some pics of your patio garden! ❤❤
This is so frustrating & I cried more than once. I have a very large balcony, but on the 17th floor we can get HUGE wind gusts. So many broken pots. I use metal zip ties & bungee cords to strap everything down now to help. Seriously, some things I just cant have. :(
Thank you for finding me! I'm on the 18th floor and it's exactly the same. The worst is when the wind comes out of nowhere and it's not on the news. It feels like you have to be constantly on guard! You have to try and attach everything that you can and in some cases just abandon the idea of having any plants that are too tall or the leaves are too big. It's really frustrating. I am on a mission this year to find some cool varieties for us that can take the wind!
Good shout! 🤣 Although becareful! Some of them absolutely detest the wind! Passion fruits love the sun but wind? Nope. Mine that were exposed gave up on life! 🤣 I am trying clematis and jasmins this year. Fingers crossed we have a noneventful less windy summer 🤣🤣
Gutted for you fella. We are on the second floor in a building near you and the wind is channelled between the buildings.. the amount of times I have had to make mad dashes outside and drag planters in to save things.. Lupins all flattened.. daisies uprooted... and Snapdragons that just look like sticks afterwards. We tried wild flowers last year and as most of them a quite tall it was beautiful until the first winds and then just looked like a badly kept meadow.. but it all comes back. I was toying with the idea of Sweet peas but there was no way they would last... keep up the videos mate, it shows what can be done. :)
Thank you so much for sharing & the encouragement. It is really gutting but at the same time like you said.. you just recognise you can't do anything about it. It's part & parcel of gardening I guess and they really do grow back. I've got peas & sweet peas on the go atm.. both doing OK for now.. just not sure how they'll do when they flower. Will do a video on them 🤙🏾Do you get any pollinators?
@@CloudGardenerUK Do you have a video on how to do pollination by hand if there are no bees around? I have tomatoes, peppers and borlotti beans that are developing flowerbuds and by the way the weather is going this year they might not be ready to go outside in time.
@@CloudGardenerUK We are quite lucky being only a few floors up, so yeah we get pollinators. Mainly Hover Flies at this time of year but come June we start to get Honey Bees and the odd Bumble bee. I scrapped the produce section this year and have just gone for beddings plants.. I needed colour and to support bees this year after the last 12 months so I am hoping the Bee number will improve. We have also manged to get pairs of both Blue Tits and Great Tits this year plus the off Goldfinch so its coming back to life :). Have you see RHS Bridgewater is open now?
Oh boy... so sorry to see this - I hope you have recovered well. If there's anyone that can see the positives, it's you :) Your positive energy far outweighs the negative, remember you achieve more than most in the most difficult of circumstances. Everything will recover well :) Best wishes, Joel
I think I needed it to happen to give me the lesson and to then help others 😊 (that's the way I am choosing to look at it anyway!🙈) thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it! ❤
@@CloudGardenerUK That's the BEST way to look at it :) "You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give" Don't stop giving - you're making a big difference - best wishes, Joel
Thank you for sharing your experience, I have a windy balcony also and have an exactly same greenhouse in your video that got blown down to the common area. I don't see much contents like this back in the day I started my gardening. It certainly inspired me to restart my gardening journey.
As you know.. It is devastating.. all the love and nurture that went into your seedlings disappearing. Especially when space is limited so succession planning isn't an option like ground level gardeners. I decided to make this channel to show balcony gardeners the ups/downs but also all the benefits to wildlife and your mental health. That means showing the good & the bad. It's not always easy but hearing you share your story and seeing that you would like to restart. . It means the world. Thanks for feeding back and hopefully you have time to sow some autumn/winter seeds ❤ You have inspired me to continue making more content. Thank you ❤ Welcome to the CG Family! 🥰❤
Did not visited that city (yet) bit it looks very urban, not so much green spaces, gardens and trees in your area. Never the less, it's very good to have a balcony as your green space, the bigger the balcony, the best the micro environment. Greetings from Belgium!
nice video, those cabbages look great! looking for some ideas now spring is around the corner. We had big success with cherry tomatoes (different species, very delicious) and with cucumbers and some herbs. cheers! subscribed greetings from 15 floors high, Amsterdam.
Oh no! :( it's so frustrating having to start again but just watching nature bounce back and find a way to survive can be so amazing! ❤ thank you for the kind words and for subscribing! 🥰
i would recommend adding some sort of backing, some wood plank to the "windowsill" on the balcony to prevent them falling off. other than that, i'd recommend growing away from the edge? edit: yeah just put the things against the walls and ideally secure them with anchors
I ended up filling the bottom shelves with compost, sand and fish, blood & bone and even then on the windier days I still have to hold my breath lol. thank you for watching :)
It's unfortunate that your sills are so narrow, but try fleshy succulents like jade plant, dune plants, ice plants. The can grow in a narrow pot. U might need to clip the pot to the glass. It's best to not block the wind, but to slow it down.
Great job...love ur videos ..I am from India.. we live on 14th floor...its really windy...can u pls tell how did u make the iron frame behind you..r these iron rods

Totally understand the disappointment you mentioned. Been there. Keep it up and stay positive!
It's really upsetting right? But lesson learned. On reflection, I learned the importance to succession sow and that sh*t happens. 😊

Not really an option when you have floor to ceiling windows and French doors leading onto the balcony with a small brick wall at either end ....
