      Briggs showed courage and bravery, but after the explosion of the first round and part of the second, Lewis put his third gear, the one in which you've hurt him, you've messed up his rhythm, he's pissed, he doesn't care about boxing anymore, he's dropping accurate fast balls one after another, and he's taking whatever you're throwing at him.

And, no, I'm not going to do the obvious black-white thing. I think the difference, truly, is that GSP was fully congruent and polished with the gentleman fighter routine. Lewis, I think was just being himself and sometimes he came off as arrogant [3rd person stuff]. But, who knows what goes on in fighter's mind at that level of competition. If that 3rd person crap helped him keep it together so be it. He doesn't do it now.

      In some fights, it's like he played chess. But when fighting Ray Mercer, can we say it's like he played chess too ?
      In that fight, I think he didn't care for strategy like in chess anymore. He seemed to be in the mood for accepting challenge for a brawl.
      Or, perhaps, it's still like playing chess, but on an extreme level that displayed complicated strategy which involved some brilliant sacrificing in order to get some advantage like displayed by legendary world champions Mikhail Tal and Bobby Fischer.

    But after viewing a lot of footage over the years, I realized Lewis was not only all class, but may be the greatest fighter of all time as well.

    • @lexsoft3969

      I used to think Lewis was a cautious boxer that wouldn't want to get hit, let alone going for a brawl, which made some of his fights boring to watch.
      But when I watched his earlier fights on youtube such as against Tony Tucker, Frank Bruno, Gary Mason, and especially vs Ray Mercer, I found that he could entertain us with exciting fights like this fight too.
      So, unlike many people who booed him for not giving a rematch vs Vitaly Klitschko, I agree with his retirement. He had shown enough; even I think, after he KOed Tyson, he could immediately retire. Nothing left to prove : undisputed champion.

    Bizarre way to stop the fight, from overbalancing from a punch, after 5 genuine knockdown. This was a good fight at the time, Lewis was at his peak, but with the standard of heavyweight boxing now it seems like a classic. I remember at the time thinking how pathetic it was that Lewis had his hands by his waist through sheer exhaustion and it was only round five. People say, yes, but look at the ammo he was throwing and shipping. It seemed to me though that world champions should be better conditioned. It felt as though Briggs was stopped before Lewis collapsed.

    • @malrobert
      @malrobert 8 лет назад +6

      If you think that was exhaustion then you haven't seen many high class boxing matches. How many times did Ali stand with his hands by his sides, many many times, was that exhaustion? You have to have many years watching (and getting in the ring) boxing to know what exhaustion looks like.

Tyson is just a third rate bully who ducked & ran from all the big guns - look at the list of folks the supposed "Iron" Mike ducked - Tua, Briggs, Morrison, Lennox early on, Foreman, Mercer, Vitali, Bowe - and Lennox beat ALL these guys except Foreman (Bowe ducked Lewis) - Lennox faced every fighter of top caliber and went through some wars, came out on top - not like bully Tyson who folded like a paper bag when faced with any remote resistance and got his ass kicked by crap fighters like McBride & Danny W. - truth be told, the only real fighters Tyson beat were 3 - Razor Ruddock & Bruno. All else were bums, and the ones he did face that were tough and showed no fear, kicked the crap out of him ---- Holyfield, Lennox, Buster-------- whereas Lennox has defeated every fighter he ever faced ---- including the 2 losses. - Golota might be considered a good win, but it was ruled a no-contest as Tyson did drugs before the fight. LENNOX RULES!
