The metal foil is RF shielding so the calculator doesn't emit and is less receptive to interference. Also, the missing OS message might've been caused by the reverse polarity clearing some part of the ROM? Good work getting one functional calculator out of the lot so far. Too bad replacement screens are so ridiculously expensive.
