When I was just getting out of the machine tool tech at De Anza, an engineer from Applied Materials had broken his arm while working on a tree, and needed help doing machining. It was o-ring grooves for high vacuum equipment with a Volstro radiusing head. I've never seen one since, but this reminded me of that.

    Hi tom,
Nice meatloaf, and a sweet boring head.
At the shop i work for we use the same type of small chopsaw.
We use cutoff wheels from mcmaster-carr.
We use the saw to cut stainless tubing.
    Thanks,

I'm late to the party here, but I just acquired a same style D'Andrea boring head (TS1 the smallest in a series of four i think.). When these were on the marked, they claimed to be the only boring head that could be adjusted while running. They are really well made, and so smooth to operate.

Hi Tom. Thanks for sharing as always. Nice test. I suggest you to try an accurate boring operation with the d'Andrea. It was a common talk here in Italy that this boring head as particular it is, it isn't really tuff so you can handle light cuts without pretending so much. You can find the patent on it online so it is pretty interesting to see how it works inside. The most problematic things that solved the d'Andrea head were cutting the external o-ring groove in a non easy handling part and the internal counterbore cutting operation inside a casting were a screw will be inserted from the inside to the outside without making a special tool. Greetings from overseas.

Many years ago when I worked for a major railroad, hammer #2 - the punch, was used to punch hot rivets out of their holes: cut the rivet head off, heat the visible part of the shank and then punch it out using a 4-pound hand sledge as the driving force. The punch part of the hammer could be ground to different diameters to match the size of the rivets.

Thanks Tom, you definitely know how to give good head- errr boring head that is !
I wonder how it would go machining an internal o ring groove or snap ring groove ?
Another thing would be machining the recess around the inside of an engine block to create a water jacket around a press in cylinder liner.
Possibly the cooling fins on an air cooled engine , you could tilt the cylinder on a 45 degree to give slanted fins that would line up horizontally on a 90 degree vee type engine , just need to set up the tool to cut on the inside os its sweep.

I've been looking forward to the D'Andrea, thanks! That's a sweeeeet boring head. Seems a bit complicated to set up, but I'm guessing it's perfect for production boring operations on a manual machine. I'm also guessing the interest in D'Andreas on eBay is gonna get a significant bump. The "OxToolCo Bump" .. I've see this effect in action .. as well as the "Abom Bump" and the "Keith Rucker Bump" et cetera.
Thanks again for enlightening us, and lightening our wallets! Thanks to Gordon too. Bastards. ;)

That is an older style D'andrea. The newer style was made in four sizes, haven't seen the largest one but the third largest TA 170 is a real beast. The smallest is the T100 and is great for making retaining ring grooves. They come with a great assortment of left & right hand modular tooling. They also use interchangeable shanks for mounting to all your different machines.

Nice stuff Tom, great to see cool tools in action. Got my spider boots the other, comfortable right out of the box. Better than the USN Lox boots Rosendahl used to get me. Also interesting to know that HF sells to the pros too, always seemed like a 'workshop guys' sort of "house of ill repute", not a place most guys want to be seen in but popular enough to still be in business. Saw your stickers and a T-shirt @ NYC CNC's open house over the weekend too. The RUclips community of 'shop guys' is great.

Hey Tom thanks for that. I'd heard the D'Andrea was a very nice boring head, but that's the first time I've seen one running. The Wohlhaupter comes with a table in the instructions to cut tapers but I've never tried doing that as I don't have power Z feed on my mill. My head will fit on my lathe too, and it can be set up like a mini HMB but I've never had cause to try it. The D'Andrea should be able to do the same taper turning, as it will feed x amount per revolution on low and y amount on high. Combined with a specific downfeed per revolution and you get the required taper. I'm curious to see just how accurate the tapers are that these heads will cut, and whether that could be setup to cut what could be considered a precision taper. If you feel like more playing I sure would like to see it turn a specific taper and how the taper turns out.

Most guys are rightly leery of HF stuff. There are some good things there. I checked the reviews for that cut off saw on their site. It appears that there is an area of concern. To quote the reviewer:
"The pulleys on the motor and the axle which drives the blade are secured by a hex screw. Ater about 5 mins of operation, the hex screw securing the pulley for the blade worked its way out and started making a growl whick destroyed the belt connecting the motor to the blade. I haven't been able to secure a replacement belt yet. You can inspect the belt/pulleys by sliding the platic housing on the left side of the unit up. Recommend you lock-tite the set screw for both pulleys which are located under the belt in the toothed surface. No belt, no workee!!(ancient proverb) pun intended.
Outside of this annoyance it appears to be a decent unit. Had I the wisdom to prevent this situation, it would be very happy with it......"
Might want to check those screws Tom.
    Mark.

Some of the Harbor freight stuff is pretty good. I bought their 4 x 6 metal cutting band saw about 6 or 7 years ago.it was on sale for $199 I had the 20% off coupon so with sales tax and 2 yr. extended warranty it cost me like $189. I use it in the vertical position for cutting out blades. It's a workhorse of a tool. Other good quality tools they sell, their hvlp paint guns. They won't compare to pro grade car painters guns but they function better than a lot of the low end brand name guns that sell at 3X to 4X the price. The Nitrile gloves are a bargain. and Goodyear brand rubber airline hoses at bargain prices.(cheaper than those horrible pvc hoses) Also the electronic fly swatter is both useful and the most entertaining use of $2.99 ever invented.

    Tom,
I wonder if you could bore a tapered hole with that head. Engage the boring head cross feed while at the same time engaging the auto down feed for the quill. I suspect you'd only be able to get a few distinct size tapers however.

    • @StefanGotteswinter

ACME Steel Company, Riverdale, IL ??? They used steel banding to bundle up product for shipping... Thing is, they've been bought a few times - International Steel Group... Arcelor-Mittal... abandoned...
It was an interesting little mill, but I and other consultants never quite managed to find the magic wand to save them from themselves...
Anywho, it seems that someone brought a souvenir of Chicago out to San Francisco!
Those little chop-saws like you got from Horrible Fright can be handy - but, I've never managed to get really true cut-off with mine... maybe the newer models work better...

    Yum, yum! Good meatloaf!
What's not to love about an accessory that fits your mill like a custom glove, has a balanced ball handle, dovetails, levers, adjustment screws, calibrations, runs as smooth as a gyroscope and actually cuts metal? I could tell you were getting that "little boy in love with the most beautiful girl in your class" feeling. Don't feel bad though; several of us viewers had that feeling too. But *you* got to dance with her. We're envious. :(
Regarding your HF purchase: Were it not for your otherwise stellar record you might well have been put on probation. However, the Great Phlebob assured me that there are rare instances where it may be acceptable to venture over to the Dark Side to acquire a piece of equipment and promptly modify it for a predetermined purpose. Obviously that was true in your case. Whew! Close call. (LOL)
    Best regards,
    Richad

Ok, Trip Dawg! How old is this boring head? Are these still available? Does it auto feed the Z vertical, or just the X/Y horizontal? Did you say you had to put a longer draw bar in the mill? I've only done a boring operation once. It was on the Chinese bench mill. I don't remember much about the machine functions. It was for a rear motor mount clamp onto a round frame. Even though it was an interrupted cut it worked beautifully. I think because I made sure the workpiece(s) was secure enough. Thanks for teaching us and making the video, Trip.

As I understand it, those "hammers" aren't hammers. They're called "set tools" because you *set* them on the work and strike them with a hammer. According to my sources, you never swing a set tool; the handle is just to keep your hand away from the working end, and should actually be somewhat springy and flexible to protect your grip from the shock of the hammer stroke.

    • @oxtoolco
      @oxtoolco  9 лет назад

You are exactly right. My friend Kyle refers to them as topping or top tools meant to be struck with another hammer. Thanks for the comment.

oxtoolco Well an adventure it surely was, only one in heartbreak and disbelief. After having conveyed the fact I had to rent a trailer and truck to drive the 200 miles each way and being reassured that I was the only one even interested and that the mill was mine as long as I got there yesterday the jackass had sold it to someone else before going to lunch! I was so pissed I nearly decked the guy. I had even called him from the U-Haul office and he said he saw their number and knew I was coming a long way. 260 bucks and an 8 hour drive for nothing.
I'm over it now, but was rather bummed out yesterday...at least I learned how to do a brake stand with a double axle trailer behind me and filled his shop with thick white smoke, LOL!

    Hey Tom,
Pretty tasty meatloaf. And being the first commenter is pretty cool as well. I do have a question regarding the boring head . . . How many $$$ do I have to cough up to own one? One would imagine that such a tool would not be in the realm where the primary watchword is "cheap"! Why am I not surprised with more hammers? Berkeley Lawerance Labs using a Harbor Freight tool? I guess the state budget is getting tight! (LOL). Thanks for all the goodies and for having meatloaf for breakfast! More coffee, please!

I still love my Chandler Boring Head (Tom did a review on them). Only catch is I kept expecting to peel off a layer of skin when it hits the end of the travel!

Would it be possible to mill a cone or taper with the boring head? I'd like to see that!

      Philip Monday Hi Phil,
The have some that will do a conic section. In fact some you can set the angle precisely.
      Best,
      Tom

It's a deal though you'll need to give up some of your hammer collection.

about the loose handle on your punch hammer, do NOT fix it, it is ment to be a loose fit, otherwise you would run the risk of the handle snaping of in use and the hammerhead going balistik through the workshop.... also you have less vibrations transfered through the handle witch makes quite a difference if you use the tool all day long....

      Zeugschmiede/Toolforge Hi Forge,
That is the first time I have heard that one. I have seen some top tools with wrapped wire handles so they maintain alignment without infuence from the handle when the striker hits them. Pretty difficult to maintain a proper loose handle on a hammer. Seems like you would lose the loose handle more often. Thanks for the comment.
      Cheers,
      Tom

actualy, since you dont strike with the hammer (i.e. there are no centrifugal forces on the hammer head), you dont... of course you have to tapp it with the handle against the anvil every now and than to make shure it slipps back to the handle but in general it is no problem....

Stop knocking Harbor Freight! They fill a niche. We all don’t crap money like some people. And quite frankly the “vice grips” I bought from Home Depot this last December were crap Harbor freight wouldn’t sell. Seriously, not everyone has the money to purchase snap on tools. I admit the early harbor freight stuff was garbage but they have come a long way since then. Some of us simply can’t afford the stuff you buy and have to get whatever we can.

It would be nice if you could separate the parts I like from the stuff I don't like. FYI tool demos good, "mail bag, flea market" bad.

I've been mostly skipping the meatloaf videos unless I see something interesting in the notes. I'm sure others are interested in weird stuff at the flea, but mostly I'm not. I prefer the project ones and find the others uninteresting. Thanks for all the good videos.
