  • In this episode, we depart Cherry Cove, Catalina Island for Santa Barbara Island. We anchor in ~45 feet, land on the island, and hike to Signal Peak summit (~650 ft) and enjoy the view of Sutil Island.

    I am envious. I spent yesterday working on my boat in Ventura and the thermometer read 117.

      My wife stayed at home this weekend and told me the temp was triple digits. It was much cooler at Catalina on Sat/Sun.

    Loved this adventure. I have to do that!! Amazing!! What a great trip. I didn't know that Santa Barbara Island was that close to Catalina. Great trip!!!

      I don't know why I didn't go sooner. It's not that far but feels sooo remote. It's easy enough to head there directly from San Pedro, but Catalina is a great stop along the way.

      @@keeldragger I was going to put my boat on the market to check what I could get for it. If I got 35k to 40k I would sell it. Boats are selling super fast and at a premium. Friends of mine at the Marina sold their boats in 24 hours at full asking price. Crazy! Stash the cash and buy something in Feb 2020. However, Mark screwed up my plans again! Hahaha!! This video was amazing, and something I can do. Will see.

      @@keeldragger I don't know. I like my boat. the center cockpit is awesome. She is good coastal cruiser. I was thinking a Trawler. More interior space more deck space. What do you think of trawlers?

    We've pined over Santa Barbara for the past seven years or so. Always wanted to go there. We had no idea that you could pull your skiff ashore and climb stairs. I read that you have to take the ladder up and pull your kayak with you. Good to know. I don't think that we are allowed to take our dog ashore, though. One day we will sail there and go ashore to explore.

      We were lucky to have small swells. If there is much of a surge, landing can be pretty sketchy. Next time we may bring kayaks.

    Was there any cell reception at the island?

    • @keeldragger
      @keeldragger  3 года назад +1

      Negative. I generally get cell reception to about 10 miles offshore from LA/San Pedro. I'll pick up signal around 5 miles out from Avalon or Two harbors on catalina. Some reception at catalina harbor on the backside of catalina. Between the back side of Catalina and out to Santa Barbara Island, zero reception.

    Stellar trip. Good you had a great engine and plenty of diesel for this trip. I KNOW you would rather sail; me too. Good job. How big of a weather window did you allow for your trip? 3-4 good days? I know you are very cautious which is good. We have a cape dory in marina del rey, only done catalina twice.

      Hi Mike, I generally look 1-2 days past my planned trip (they are mostly long weekends). Windy & PredictWind are pretty good sources for the GFS & ECMWF weather models. I look at NOAA as well, which also tells me if there are any small craft advisories or gale warnings. Past 3 days out, the forecast gets a bit less accurate. It's Southern California and the winds are often light in the morning (which is usually when I depart) and build in the afternoon. My tank holds about 90 gal of diesel and I usually keep it above half full. Running out of fuel to/from Catalina is not a concern.

    Do you have any cell service at Santa Barbara island? We have been thinking about it but I am restricted to having to stay in cell service for work.

    • @keeldragger
      @keeldragger  4 года назад +1

      Zero cell service at santa barbara Island and spotty service at Catalina.

      @@keeldragger thank you. Yeah Catalina we can manage with service since I can use my hotspot. Maybe one day I'll get a break from the electronics handcuffing me and we can head out to Santa Barbara island for a few days.
