In the US, we have a chain of big box home decor stores called World Market, that also has a section of imported foodstuffs from around the world. You can usually find real Mars bars there (along with some of the interesting Japanese KitKats). I get tiny little gift-sized jars of Marmite there, too, because I use it up so slowly.

Me: I was already confused. I'm American and grew up not just in the US, but in the Middle East too. A lot of candy changed during my time going back and forth between countries in the early 00's, and I'm STILL ticked off that I can't get a mars bar or a bounty. Almond joy really isn't the same, it's too sweet 😭.
I actually have a memory of being all excited with my candy stash from Halloween or something, opening the mars bar, and being udderly bewildered because it was so completely different from what I expected. I remember trying to explain it to my older brother and him telling me that they're different things in different countries. I almost wanted to cry, because it was my favorite candy bar at that point. I might still hold a little resentment over US mars bars....

We also don't get large bags of chocolate chips for cooking, we just use very large chocolate bars like a massive Dairy Milk and melt that down(its much better chocolate as well).

Hi Glen! Just made this after seeing your video. My Local grocery store were out of Mars-bars, so I opted them for a Swedish bar called Japp instead. - Will taste the result in a couple of hours or so. Btw, in Sweden it´s quite common to do a Snickers variety of this, but instead of chocolate bars you use a can of peanutbutter, sirup and castersugar, cornflakes instead of Rice Krispies. The result is very tasty, hard to stop eating.

Corn syrup really is not a thing here. I have never seen it in a store and never tasted it.
Maybe you can get stores that sell foreign foods to import corn syrup, but it probably would be more expensive than golden syrup.
Maple syrup you can buy at regular food store, but it's very expensive.

in the UK in the late 1970's and 80 these were the things to have! To make they even cheaper replace the butter in the base with Margarine ( Preferably contains partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, animal fats or for that true experience Hydrogenated de-odorized marine oils ) and chocolate flavoured cake covering for the top. For the cake covering think "prepared cheese product" compared to cheese and you have the right idea. I never had a whole mars bar to myself when i was a kid they were bought for this recipe! Just made these for tonight. We have an international grocery store not too far from us, and I was lucky to score four Mars bars the other day (six, actually, but two were sacrifices, shall we say). I've been hooked on Mars bars since my business trip to England back around 2000, and I'm looking forward to trying this tonight.

In Germany, long ago, Drei Musketiere (Three Musketeers) was a longish (about 20cm), chocolate covered, open work braided, chewy caramel stick and Twix was called Raider. Just wishing to add to the confusion.

Tray bakes, a staple of coffee mornings, birthday parties and supper stuff at kids camps here in the UK
You could honestly do a whole series on them, very often there's no baking involved and the category refers to the inch deep baking tray that the mix is pressed into to set.

Love it! I was pretty sure I was going to make this but that comment sold me.
We have something very similar in Australia, although I think our version also added in marshmallows. Is that right, Aussies? Or am I getting confused with another Rice Bubbles melt'n'mix slice?

My mother always flattened the mix for rice crisp treats on wax paper. Much easier in my opinion vs a pan.

For further clarification, in the US there is 4 bars. The distinctions are if it's chocolate nougat or regular nougat, and does it have caramel:
    Charleston Chew: nougat w/o caramel
    Milky Way: nougat w/ caramel
3 Musketeers: Chocolate nougat w/o caramel
Mars Bar: Chocolate nougat w/ caramel

I haven't had any of the candy bars you mentioned since I was a child, so, yes, I'm confused. But these look good! When I used to make marshmallow Rice Krispie squares, sometimes I would add melted chocolate chips to the melted butter and marshmallows, so I wonder if that is similar? OK, OK, this is making me hungry - for things I'm just not supposed to eat anymore! Yes, "evil!"

Another chocolate bar you can get in Canada but not in US. Coffee Crisp. There are others too. Aero and Crunchie. Gooooood. Never fear if you want to spend the money they are on Amazon. How bad is your sweet tooth? Oh yeah and McIntosh toffee which I swear has been changed for the worse since I rotted my teeth out on it as a kid. 😂

You can make it "healthy" by adding fruit and nuts! Dried fruit and crushed nuts, added with the rice crispies, add texture and variety in taste.

In Italy we usually put the mixture in a bundt pan and we rarely glaze it with the chocolate on top, once out of the pan. It's something more than often present at kids' parties.

Might be interesting with peanut butter chips instead of chocolate on top. Years ago, I came across an old cookbook in a used bookstore. There was a recipe for Milky Way Cake. It said to use four Milky Way Bars. I wondered how many Milky Way bars as the ounces then is different than now. I guessed and it came out tasting like a caramel cake (good), but the texture was dense.

Gonna have to try this. My family has a similarly evil rice krispie recipe. Make regular rice krispie treats, spread a thin layer of peanut butter on top, then a thin layer of melted chocolate. I can eat a whole tray in 2 days if I'm very careful to eat it slowly.
