This system works so well because of how transparent you are with your own money! Money is such a hush hush topic for so many people that it is AWESOME to actually see someone show their real budget and the actual money they are working with, not just vague fictional numbers. Thank you!
This might sound strange, but its helpful to see a non-rice-and-beans example of spending categories. I am out of debt, but I'm having a hard time with tremendous guilt and anxiety to spend money on things like fun or getting my nails done or beauty.
I used to feel really guilty spending any fun money. I switched my budgeting technique so that I put a guaranteed % of each paycheck toward savings and retirement *first*, before devoting the remainder to my spending categories. By knowing I'd already met my savings goals for the month, I felt more at ease to spend for fun purposes. Maybe you could try this?
That sounds like a shame issue and exactly why I don't follow the majority of the popular budget advice because all it does is shame you into spending money that isn't on things you can't absolutely live without. When there should have always been a fun budget even if the fun budget was a one time a month expense that wasn't greater than $20.
I absolutely love this!!! This month I’ve gone back to using cash after being cashless this year. You have always been really encouraging to me!!! Thank you for always bringing us value!!!!
This is great for those starting out! I do digital tracking and cashless for my Groceries and Gas but I've definitely got so much better with the other categories with envelopes
Very helpful. I get so motivated to to the budget by paycheck method. I track my spending then I fall off track. I NEED to stick with it and complete the process. I do feel like every time I watch your YT videos things sink in a little better.
Thank you. I'm just beginning this journey. Our fixed expenses (mortgage, house insurance, rates, car insurance, family savings, school tuition fees & 2 credit cards) are all online paid through my husband's pay check as he gets paid way more than me. My pay check is more for my use only really. He says it's mine to away with. So, I'm just using paper envelopes with mine. My categories are the following: personal savings (I've placed a $1k goal target then I'll move it into our joint savings account as a surprise to my husband), home building maintenance ($1k goal), birthday fund for each of us (me, my husband, 2 daughters, son in law, again with goal targets of $300 each), emergency fund (no goal target there, I'll just keep adding $50 each pay period) and our cat's needs envelope. That's it for now. I don't want to be overwhelmed as I'm only beginning.
Hi I saw this video like a yr or 2 ago and began doing same. I am so happy my little one has gotten intrigued by this and wants to follow it. I just wanna say thanks for your videos.

Hey Kumiko, started using the cash envelopes system back when I started the Dave Ramsey University program over 6 years ago, probably around the same time you did, lol. I just pre-ordered your book, and next year I’ll be using your workbook that I just ordered yesterday! I’ve tried other budget workbooks and I ended up having to make major adjustments. Looking forward to working with your system.

Thank you for the breakdown. I find when I plan out my meals I don’t need to eat out. I really do need to do cash envelopes for food and eating out. It is so easy to overspend. I write out budgets every month but I never go to zero because I know we will need that extra. I have no emergency and I have things I need for the house but never get there. I will have to start small with cash envelopes and open some extra savings for the long hall expenses.
I'm so grateful that I found your channel. A few years back I pulled previous months statements and began budgeting and it did well up until furlough life last year and since having our full income back we have gotten way off track. I'm ready to get back on track and even thinking about the cash envelopes method this time around.
Thank you for explaining your envelopes in detail. It was helpful to understand which ones you use cash and which ones you use your debit card. Great video!
What do you do with the money that you don’t spend at the end of the month? Do you roll it into the next months cash envelope or put it into savings? I feel like I’d put it right into savings.
I have seen other videos where it depends on your goals. Some people have a goal to create a good savings account while others are using that extra money to pay off a debt.
You could try putting in your savings, paying something off, or using for extra cash for the next month so basically what I’m trying to say here is that you can you try all of these and see which one works for you and basically experiment with it.Everyone is different with it hope this helps and good luck 😊
My personal budget categories are groceries, travel (gas, car expenses, ubers), entertainment, restaurants, beauty/health, home, and misc. I do cashless and just use the every dollar app to track each category budget, I reset it every time I get paid, I also don't have it hooked up to any of my accounts because I want control over adding each time I spend and what budget it goes into. I have a fish tank but don't keep a budget for that each paycheck, I have a sinking fund so when I need to buy food, salt, or other supplies I just pull from there.
Thank you Miko. Finding you on youtube back in Mei 2020 is one of the biggest thing that change my mind on how i spending my money. Thank you so much 💜

I think it's a great idea if you get payed on a weekly/biweekly basis to put the money you get in between the beginnings of months in an envelope, and use the previous month's salary for the next month, just like if you were payed once a month. It ensures that even if you get sick for a few days and don't get payed for a week, or one week you only work 1-2 days and you get your salary only the next week, you still don't have to worry about having to get groceries or paying your bills that week.
I always love your videos. They are so practical and go right to the point. And I love your art...just purchased the ladybugs cash envelopes. I am learning so much with your videos and I feel very motivated and more confident. Thank you! You are the best!

In the last 15 months most of my envelopes went to cashless due to the pandemic. Since things are now opening up and I will be fully vaccinated I will start them again however not as many as I had. I find for crafts, groceries and eating out the envelopes work well as it keeps you on track. The others I will leave cashless as I do not have trouble keeping to my budget on those.
Hi miko..I had to get my car fixed and it costs over 800..I had to use all my car money envelope and all of what I had for my 52 week savings..I'm happy I had the money..I gotta start over again 🙃 I'm feeling frustrated about it ..I really need to focus more it's work.
You are very pretty and I enjoy your videos..so much insight..mom of 9 ,i stretch my husbands hard earned dollars around the corner..and back..really tight budget. But I am still getting ideas from you.
I get paid fortnightly, the first fortnight I fill my cash envelopes, the second fortnight I fill my sinking funds. I alternate because its simpler for me but it doesn't make a difference.
If you have a budget planner you can keep track of your expenses as well. Or just keep a reg envelope, write it down. I keep all my receipts at the end of the week. I add everything on on my expense tracker in my planner.
QUESTION!! When you go to the store and are purchasing from multiple categories say from food and household, how do you pay? Do you just take the cash from the different envelopes?

I'm going to try hard this coming year to do envelopes. Even if I do cashless, I can do it. My categories will be household, auto (gas) , kids, and misc. Kids will include diapers, but we're really close to being ready for potty training. If I can get my oldest to go for it, the younger one will do it, so that money can still be stacking up and the kids can do whatever with it. We are very well stocked with toiletries and household stuff, so this will just roll until we need it. Gas, of course, will go in the gas tank. And miscellaneous is... well I'm nto sure exactly but I'm treating it like an "other" account.
My question is how do I get my points when I don't use my card. I love using my Visa and I keep all the points for a trip at the end of the year. Maybe this way would help me not overspend...
When you are at target or Walmart and you need to buy items that are in different categories. Do you ring up your items in separate transactions? Most target runs I do have clothing and food.
Sometimes when I go to Walmart I might have four different transactions 1 food car maintenance if I have to buy clothes or household items which would be like shampoo toilet paper and then sometimes I might have an extra one because speak dog food cat food sometimes I might have five transactions most of the time it's for it all depends
Hi! I absolutely love your channel! It’s changed my life! 💕 My fiancé & I just combined our finances & we have multiple paydays per month. He gets paid bi-weekly & I get paid from my full time job semi-monthly & from my part time job semi-monthly as well. We essentially have 6 paydays a month, sometimes with paydays a few days apart. How do we “combine” paydays? Love you!
I think I remember her saying she only takes her misc envelope with her unless she is going somewhere targeted (i.e.take her food envelope to buy groceries.)
Just so I understand, So if you have a cash envelope that is set to hold $80 and you’ve spent 20 of those dollars in between paychecks when you get paid are you putting that $20 in there to keep that cash envelope at 80 or are you putting $80 into that envelope every time you get paid
You put the 80 in every time you get paid, if that is what you set up. At the end of the month, if you have an overage, you can reallocate the funds to savings or carry the balance. I personally reallocate funds.
Do you use a digital envelope system too. Many places are going to debit card or visa only and rural areas no longer have access to ATM or banks. Also I don't like to have cash laying around.
Thank you so much for this video! I adopted the cashless envelopes mostly because we have online purchases that we count in our budget, like pet food or online courses. But it's true that having cash instead of just numbers on a paper would be very efficient for limiting overspending. I try to be thorough though ^^ Also, love your tattoos, they are gorgeous! Do you budget these, like in a sinking fund? Take care!

Could you please do an in-depth video regarding cashless budgeting? I dislike carrying cash but I do swipe my cards like there’s no tomorrow. I do have multiple savings accounts that I use as my sinking funds. Thank you!
@@monicaruiz734 she has an overview of a cashless budget but not an in-depth one. She has also mentioned her assistant does cashless budgeting but I haven’t found a video from either of the ladies.
But what do you do with any left over money from envelopes. Like say I allowed myself $150 a month for eating out but at the end of the month I only spent $75, what do I do with the extra $75 still in my envelope? Do I roll it over into the next month, give it to a different envelope that I was cutting it close on with spending or just throw it into a emergency savings?
Hi Budget Moms- I know the budget mom talked about how changing your financial life can be a lonely road sometimes but any tips to find like minded people to help encourage one another?
There is a budget mom Facebook group! Its a great group, very suppourt and nice people. You can also enter the mentorship program through it if you want specific help.
Hello ! I’ve stumbled upon your videos and I would like to try and apply this method in my life, especially since my husband I are starting a family ! Any tips for a beginner ? Or perhaps a step-by-step game plan ? What I don’t understand is that say you haven’t spend all of your beauty allocated money at the end of the month (only 25 out of the 50$ for example), what happens then ? Does it mean that, the following month, you are only refilling the envelope with 25$ to make it an even 50 again or do you put 50 again anyways, meaning that you have an extra 25 if you want to treat yourself some more, or do you take what’s left to allocate it to a sinking fund or anything else ? Thank you !
Only if you want to, I personally make my own from scrap-booking paper and laminate the outside so they are super durable. I then use them for 3-4 months at a time. I have sticker paper I print tracking slips on and stick it to the outside where Miko's is printed on. Then each month I just apply new stickers over the old ones. I enjoy making the cute envelopes every few months and it gives me a refreshed look but once I make them they could easily last me the entire year too. LOL
Hi. I kinda fell off with my cash envelopes..but, I have been amazing with my sinking funds, investing, bills. The money I spend on groceries, eating out, farmers market (with the boys weekly for treats), pizza Fridays, etc. it has creeped back up to about 1400 dollars a month!! Can you do a detailed video on tips about how to stop wasting hundreds of dollar a month with food. I’m really doing great otherwise, but it really bothers me that I could be doing so much better. PS…I have enough money for investing, kids extra curriculum, beauty, etc….I would love to be able to put that extra money toward savings.

Every single one of my billings from my house payment to all utilities streaming apps phones credit cards on down the line is 100% online now there’s no more need for cash honestly very few places don’t have a debit card slider anymore everything can be done 100% online including my groceries there’s no need for cash pulled out unless it’s a sinking fund in my opinion and for that definitely would pull out cash and put it aside so it’s not used other than that budgeting system is super easy it’s a notebook and a pen
So what do you do if you need to pay for something that would fall under your envelopes BUT they only accept cards? So say I need to buy admission to my daughters volleyball tournament and they don’t sell tickets at the door and you have to buy online. Do you just take that cash and deposit it to offset?
How do you pay with cash envelopes when you are paying for multiple things on one transaction? Like if you go to Walmart and pick up groceries and clothes? That would be 2 different cash envelopes for me... would you suggest doing 2 different transactions?

💙 I agree that our journeys are different when it comes to budgeting! 💙
Yes, 100%. Everybody's journey is so so unique. ❤️
I assume auto pay is like direct debit in the U.K.? We often don’t get a choice about paying that at way or get charged a fee if we don’t.
Thank you so much!!
When you are at target or Walmart and you need to buy items that are in different categories. Do you ring up your items in separate transactions? Most target runs I do have clothing and food.
Personally, I do separate transactions at self checkout :-)
I try to do separate, but there have been times I highlighted and calculate it out later.
@@thebudgetmom Ok, thanks 😊
@@nicolelink2419 OK, thanks 😊
Sometimes when I go to Walmart I might have four different transactions 1 food car maintenance if I have to buy clothes or household items which would be like shampoo toilet paper and then sometimes I might have an extra one because speak dog food cat food sometimes I might have five transactions most of the time it's for it all depends
Can't wait to get one. :)
Hi! I absolutely love your channel! It’s changed my life! 💕
My fiancé & I just combined our finances & we have multiple paydays per month. He gets paid bi-weekly & I get paid from my full time job semi-monthly & from my part time job semi-monthly as well. We essentially have 6 paydays a month, sometimes with paydays a few days apart. How do we “combine” paydays?
Love you!
How do you cope with veterinary expenses for your pets?
I have a question - do you bring all the envelopes with you when you go out or just a few you think you will be spending from?
I think I remember her saying she only takes her misc envelope with her unless she is going somewhere targeted (i.e.take her food envelope to buy groceries.)
What is the link for the binder and envelopes?
Just so I understand, So if you have a cash envelope that is set to hold $80 and you’ve spent 20 of those dollars in between paychecks when you get paid are you putting that $20 in there to keep that cash envelope at 80 or are you putting $80 into that envelope every time you get paid
You put the 80 in every time you get paid, if that is what you set up. At the end of the month, if you have an overage, you can reallocate the funds to savings or carry the balance. I personally reallocate funds.
New Subscriber here! I saw you on Tamron Hall
I bought your budget book
Thank you
Hi is mutual funds consider an emergency fund? Thanks
I try to be thorough though ^^
Also, love your tattoos, they are gorgeous! Do you budget these, like in a sinking fund?
Take care!

Does miko have a podcast?
Could you please do an in-depth video regarding cashless budgeting? I dislike carrying cash but I do swipe my cards like there’s no tomorrow. I do have multiple savings accounts that I use as my sinking funds. Thank you!
I believe she did a video on this last year.

Thank you !
So you print out new envelopes every month?

Where do I put the extra money if I don’t spend it all in a specific category?
Is your wallet RFID capable?
How do you pay with cash envelopes when you are paying for multiple things on one transaction? Like if you go to Walmart and pick up groceries and clothes? That would be 2 different cash envelopes for me... would you suggest doing 2 different transactions?
what do you do at the end of the month if the envelope has money left over, do you remove it and place it in savings?
That's what I do or save it in the category you had it in
I roll it over until the end of the year and keep it in a totally separate saving.
