Thomas Hampson made a triumphant début in the title role of Verdi’s Macbeth in this Zurich Opera production, with Paoletta Marrocu as his beautiful, power-hungry wife. Both singers’ peerless vocal performances were matched by their compelling characterization of the murderous couple. David Pountney’s hard-edged production, with sets by Stefanos Lazaridis and costumes by Marie-Jeanne Lecca, resonates with symbolic references to the battle of the sexes and throws into sharp relief the link between power and gender. Franz Welser-Möst conducts.

I have seen this production several times. It was a highlight to see and hear Mr Hampson in this role. Lucky us that one can buy a dvd of it to recall these great evenings
