My Snake gets an Ultrasound to see if she's Gravid!

- Today we bring not one, but TWO snakes to the vet for radiographs (x-rays) to discover whether they're gravid or just fat. The results are surprising, and we even pull out the ultrasound machine on the garter snake to take a closer look!

So Prius was indeed preggers, but Vixen just needs to fart...
Snakes dont fart but i enjoyed this comment a lot XD I dont know how snakes pass gas build ups like that...it's not at all worrying?
@@Night-ud4ew Well, there'd only be two possible exits, right...?
@@Night-ud4ew Yes, they do. They certainly do fart.
@@InnannasRainbow Ahh ok, could you link me to read up on that? I did a quick search when i watched the video, and what i read sounded like they couldn't fart, or more specifically it was their cloaca opening when they pooped, but it wasnt a "fart" as in passing gas like humans understand farts to be.
@@Night-ud4ew I have a snake and he has passed gas. I have smelled it and I have seen 'fart bubbles'. Maybe it's not quite what humans would consider a fart but as far as I am concerned, if they pass gas, it's a fart.
Fox Snake: *pretends to be pregnant to be fed more and pampered*
Me: same lol
Children: *pretends to be sick so they don’t have to go to school and be pampered*
I hope at least a few baby garters turn out viable. I always enjoy the tiny noodle round-up that ensues
So, what happens to slugs in garter snakes? Do they get reabsorbed since they're suppose to come out once they hatched? Or do they get expelled from the mom's body because they didn't hatch? Interesting...
That's what I was wondering, is it dangerous for mama snake?
If I remember correctly the snake pushes the slugs out sometimes depending on the position and in some cases the end up getting stuck and need to be guided out if they aren’t reabsorbed
With Kenyan sand boas, who also give live birth, they push the slugs out
I only know of BCI live births and slugs which are also live/go through the same process. A slug looks like those eggs you soak in vinegar? Yellow casings. If i had to be simple.
They are passed/birthed along with the live young. You can look up how their slugs look online easy!
They tend to just be stillborn
Ultrasound tech here. I'm pretty sure I saw babies in those eggs. Small babies. Also, fluid (water-ish like egg goo) is a different density than bone and soft tissue so a collection of that will show up even if there's no calcified shell. Also, for years I've wanted to ultrasound snake eggs. They're soft enough I'm pretty sure we could see through the shells. 😉
hilzarie I just posted the same thing! The vet really needed to adjust the depth! But yeah at the very end you can see the skeleton within fluid!
No way, you two were able to see skeletons?! Now I'm going to rewind and zoom in!
@@SnakeDiscovery I see little lumps on the dorsal sides of the eggs (down in the image) once in a while from around 9:00 to 9:30. I can tell it's the dorsal sides because I can see mom's spine. 😁 Hope that helps
Snake Discovery yes I agree about the time stamp! How can I send you a pic of my snake’s ultrasound? If you saw it you would know the glimpse to look for. I actually was able to ultrasound my snake before a vacation so that I could tell that she wasn’t far enough along for us to worry about her delivering while we were gone!
I thought Emily said "Eggsray" I paused for moment like; an x-ray done on a reptile to see if it has eggs, could be called an Eggsray.
You know, I like that. *eggsray* much easier to say lol 😆💝x
EGGSRAY
I loved this! Hope the baby snakes all get born healthy with zero fingers and toes
I held a snake for the first time ever and one coiled round on my arm and refused to get off I was so happy
Wow I’ve been noticed by ppl
it tried to eat you ... ;)
I got to hold a snake for the first time last week!

*Cue angry snake lovers.*
If/when I get to that point, it'll be due to watching Snake discovery and the help on calming my nerves🐍🐍😝 and hearing you say that makes me a little more confident
@Heather Jones when you finally do touch and hold a snake don’t be scared bc they can sense it so be confident and just keep calm and let them do what they want
On the X-rays it has their names as Vixen Roberts and Prius Roberts 😂
So cute 🥰
Our vet uses last names too. It's incase two pets have the same name but it's still cute when he calls for "Sadie Dunn" lol
Lol, yes, it’s the same with my cats when they are at the vet, they go by Bella Paxton and Niko Paxton. They are my babies after all! 😃
@@bethierose555 'Sadie Dunn' sounds very human haha, wouldn't be surprised if a human also shares your pet's full name
My vet's too. Haha. It's so cute to see my boys names with my surname. (I have rats.)
"She's in good condition"
Is that vet for "she's fat"?
Its vet for "shes a healthy snek"
Vet for "She's fat" would be "she looks a little bit overconditioned."
glad the vets think I'm in good condition
from not knowing the baby daddies to faking pregnancies 😂 this is Maury for snakes lol
I'm a pretty lost person... but I find so much joy in how much these people respect life and take care of animals and each other. This channel is more than just reptile care and funny interactions... it shows that there are good people in the world and perhaps more weirdly... that life is worth living.

The snake hatching videos are my favorite, can't wait to see more!
baby sneks 🖤💖
Oh wow!!! Your vet is awesome!!!! Thank her so much for allowing all of us to tag along!!! That was so cool!!!!!!!!!
I bred my Candoia aspera (Viper Boa) this year and I have been using and abusing the fact I'm a vet tech and have access to an ultrasound... But anyway last US we saw little angry noodles in there!! I'm so excited!! It's a 7-9month gestation! But she's due between October and December so we are getting SUPER close!!!
How'd the babies turn out? :)
I'm actually terrified of snakes IRL but I've started watching your channel recently and really like it! I find it super interesting and you make it look so cool :) you're amazing!
Can we just appreciate how nice the vet is, she's also very knowledgeable
All 6 downvotes are from the fox snake for being put on a diet
When your snek pretends to be gravid, but she really just has gas............😔😔😔🤣🤣😍😍😍
Is there more wholesome content on the entirety of RUclips? I'd be hard pressed to find anything more worth watching... so educational, such a sweet couple... I watch a video or two at least everyday... I think these are the sweetest people on earth.
You should have asked ""what happens if one of the babies hatch at the front"" Like would the move past the other eggs to get out?
I absolutely love your channel. I can't stand watching any other snake channel. You are literally THE snake channel on RUclips. ❤️
My first time seeing a snake ultrasound 😂😂
That’s what I’d do if I was a snake I’d just want extra food lol
Thanks for the likes☺️👊🏽

OH NO!
So due to the Covid 19 outbreak, my university has moved everything to online, including our Radiology class and lab. So this is what my prof. has to teach us about snake untrasounds! I used to watch this channel all to time so I think that's super cool!
i just wanna say you’ve given me so much knowledge about snakes and brought back the idea of me one day owning some snakes and i showed these videos to my boyfriend and he’s even somewhat interested to which has been so hard in the past so just thank you for your fun and very educational video hopefully i can buy from you guys one day once i’m settled you guys are great!!
Emily, you and Ed may not have human children, but your joy and excitement when you have reptile babies is equal to that of any mom giving birth to human babies. I love seeing your excitement when there are babies coming! You're awesome!
Gravid is the Swedish word for pregnant. Human pregnant. So I'm all "why are they pronouncing it like that".
Jeanette Eriksson Portuguese too!! But we put an A at the end, we say "grávida".
Same (I’m from Denmark)
Same (from norway)
It is in English too, but that's more of a specific term in medical fields, I'm pretty sure it is used to refer to the total number of times a egg has attached to the uterine wall (not the number carried to term), I really should know but if I check then my first day on my next rig will feature a labour in progress call and noone wants that
Same in Norwegian
That's so cool! Seeing Prius' eggs was SOOO AWESOME! And greedy little Vixen....
“She was looking quite THICC”
Beat me to it lol
*T H I C C*
Aww, looks like Prius is going to have slugs. I think at that large/developed you're right, you would see little skeletons - that membrane is thin. Keep her very well hydrated! I've had boas slug out and it's a bummer. It's harder to pass slugs than live babies. Hope all goes well!
Hey Emily, if you're looking for a new species of snake to try out, I'd suggest a rubber boa. They are known for being the most docile variation of boa and have never been known to attack humans, though they do musk just like garter snakes. They're unfortunately pretty uncommon for breeders to have, but if you started breeding them that would give more people access to this awesome species. Additionally, their calm nature would be great for programs, as rubber boa are commonly used to help people overcome their fear if snakes :)
Ooh, now we might be looking forward to an enclosure full of little wiggly noodles in the near future! (It seems to me that baby garter snakes are the *wiggliest* baby snakes.)
MTV: I didn't know I was eggnant!!
I ultrasounded our gravid garter earlier this summer to estimate how far along she was. Usually I perform ultrasound on humans and the snake was much more wiggly. I have some helpful hints how to get a better image on a garter and how to see how far along they are. I was able to see a baby skeleton at the very end with quite a bit of fluid around it meaning she’s in late stage. I think she will give birth within 2-3 weeks.
Don't you mean eggs-ray?
Mookthilda King underrated comment
That was bad, but I still laughed.

I just brought my turtle to Dr. Kizer on August 21st because of your videos and I found out she was gravid and retaining eggs. She's so awesome!
My teacher was like "all snakes lay eggs " and I was like noooooo garter shakes give birth to live young and she said "no" and I said yes I was right so yea...
Thanks for all the likes peeps
Well garter snakes have eggs in their body , but they hatch in their own body to have live babies
i told dad he didn’t believe me
then he googled it 😏
Ah yes the negotiator
Technically all snakes do have eggs, but some of them hatch them inside the body. (So do mammals, the eggs take a few weeks to form, but take 9 months for the embryo to develop fully)
All vertebrate families have both egg-laying and live-birthing species except birds. I am very sad that there are no live-birthing birds.
I used to be so scared of snakes and hated them now I love snakes and think they are Fascinating thank you I love your channel💕❤️
🖤💜❤️🧡💛💚💙💝💕❣️💖💘💓💗 Welcome to the team. 💪🏻
Prius: mom I’m telling you I’m pregnant!
Emily: so today were going to the vet!
Fox snake: mom I’m totally having baby’s....😈
Can you interview your vet sometime? I’m fascinated about when she learned about snakes in vet school. Seems like a speciality class she would of had to take.
Hey I just want to say, I got a king snake today and this channel really helped me with him, I love my pet snake :) thanks
After subscribing and watching your snake vids, I finally got my first pet snakes ever. Two baby albino checkered garter snakes. The boy is named Champ after the Lake Champlain monster, and the female is named Nessie after the Loch Ness monster 🐍🐍😁😁

This was a super cool educational video! Very neat of the vet to show all this!
You’ve talked about snakes retaining sperm from previous matings, like when Brad was pregnant and you thought Janet (RIP) was the dad because she could have retained his sperm. Could Prius have done that and gotten pregnant again that way despite not being paired again? Whatever is going on, I just hope for a healthy mama and if there are any babies that they are healthy too :)
That was my thought as well!
Did Prius give birth? I can't find updates in the community tab.
More babies!! I always get so excited : }
Yay! I missed a few videos so I'm hoping to catch up at some point~
Glad I managed to get here on the day this video was uploaded because I just got back from holiday~~
Love yaa!
So garters have eggs but they dont wanna show them
Garters give live birth
The garter snake babies do develop in eggs but they hatch inside the snake.
Humans have eggs to, but they are only used at the very beginning of a baby developing
Rhi G that’s omni oviparous i thought garters were viviparous
Nvm she literally says they are Omni in the video 😓😓 sorry I’m an idiot
What a cool episode! Thanks so much for sharing all of it with us viewers =)
Awe, it's awesome to hear Prias is gravid! If they are infact fertile, I'm curious to know when/if you'd put them up for sale! Love all your vids and can't wait to find out if she's fertile!
She usually puts at least some of the babies up for sale, but her waiting list for serpents is full. You can always check the website in case there are any new ones up for adoptions though. Sometimes people entrust snakes to her and she then puts it on her website.
I feel like writing a treatment for a new TV series: SNAKE GYNO (in color!)
Emily: But she should’ve had them 3 weeks ago
4 weeks ago

Hi Emily and Ed, thanks for your time and effort and videos. Awesome and amazing. Diane from Southampton UK
I have been watching your channel for a while now and love all the cool different reptiles you have. My 13 year old who helps me with my small ball python breeding projects, always knows alot about reptiles. Finally I asked where do you here all this stuff and he says he watches an awsome youtube channel. Come to find out it's yours. Thanks for posting cool videos that everyone can learn from and enjoy.
YEEEEEES I'm so excited I have a good shot at getting my garter now
