Once the MGF became the MG TF and ditched the hydragas suspension it actually became a very competent sportscar handling wise, too bad this was filmed a year before that transition.

Erm... MX5? What a strange old clip.

It's clearly obvious they selected only rear mid engine roadsters, as it should be. Rear mid engine is the truest essence of a sports car. The MX-5 is a totally different layout and would have stuck out like a sore thumb. No point. The Mx-5 needs to be compared to the BMW Z3 etc.

I own an Elise S2 and have previously owned a TF and a Mk3 MR2. The Elise S2 has supercar looks and the best driving experience possible on B roads. Wonderful, involving and stunning car, but it is hardcore (which isn't perfect for motorway drives) and does need to be garaged. For a much lower budget though, the standout car is the Mk3 MR2. As Tiff says, "90% of the Elise" when it cost £18,000 new, but S/H prices are so low (in the UK) you can now get a well looked after MR2 that represents 90% of the Elise for 20% of the price. Absolute bargain. The Elise is peerless in what it does but i did use my MR2 daily and it didn't need to be garaged. In comparison to the TF and MX5 (it's natural competition), the MR2 has the best steering, the best handling and is the best sports car of the 3. The pods behind the seats hold plenty of luggage - too much is made out of the lack of boot. I will always keep the Elise, the perfect sports car, but of the many cars ive owned over the years, the MR2 is the only one i miss.

I think this presenter I great! The BBC would probably need someone like him to keep top gear alive

Poyrooo if you mean Tiff Needell: He's been doing Fifth Gear since top gear was rebooted (alongside Vicky Butler Henderson who was talking at the very start)

Where was the MX5 (cheaper than all the above at the time) or the Honda S2000 (a little more than the Elise at £26K)? These two should have been in contention here. The Boxster, starting at £30K was perhaps too pricey.

There are tons of convertibles they could have added in this video. The Z3, Audi TT or the Eclipse Spyder could have all been in there as well. However, they probaby decided to cut it down to 4 cars just so the video wouldn't be too long.

I think they were going for mid engine roadsters only, the boxster could've been a contender if it was good enough to justify its higher price

Well, that's because the MX-5 and the Honda S2000 aren't mid-engined. The Boxster is however mid-engined and would fit right in there with the Elise, VX220/Speedster and the MR2 Spyder. But, it's also heavier than those three. The Tommy Kaira ZZ would be a good contender here and Leading Edge even re-branded them as the 190RT and 240RT. Sadly, those cars would come out until after this Top Gear episode would be filmed. The Leading Edge 190 RT is still a good contender tho. Mid-engined, lightweight and it even costs 26,500 pounds when it was launched which is a little more expensive than the Elise and VX220. Downside is that it doesn't appear to have roof cover, so would have to get your own I guess. However, the more expensive 240 RT does have a roof cover.

The Barchetta was a bit of an odd-one out. A lovely little car, but it was FWD so (rightly or wrongly) was never seen as a sportscar.

The MG looks pretty ugly towards me, unlike the rest of the MG range.
