SID CAESAR: Slowly I Turned (YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS - VERY rare sketch)

  • "Slowly I turned . . .step by step . . .inch by inch . . ." Sid and Imogene's spin on the old vaudeville routine. Sid is the innocent victim who lends a sympathetic ear to Imogene's troubles---and has no idea what he's letting himself in for.
    NOTE: No date is available for this sketch, which has only been released on very rare out of print VHS/Betamax tapes. My undying gratitude to KJH, the uber-fan of Sid Caesar in Pennsylvania who found these tapes, had them transferred digitally, and shared them with me so that I could make them available on RUclips.

    I actually got to see these two geniuses perform this in person, back in the early 1980s. I had a great seat just a few feet from the edge of the stage! The audience was rolling on the floor at the end of the skit.

    Imogene's "may I help you" and his "thank you" are brilliant changes in the energy. They were so insanely talented.

    'Loved this variation on "Niagara Falls." I didn't know they dusted off vaudeville classics on YSOS; I've never seen an obvious one performed there before. What gives this such a kick is Imogene's spirited pummeling of Sid. No shrinking violet (if shrieking violent) she. It's always refreshing to see women perform slapstick. It was relatively rare then, and now. And the whole jumper-on-the-Empire State bit (even to the topper) puts the lie to our sense that 50s TV was sleepy Eisenhower-era sweetness.
    Thanks so much for sharing!

      Actually, in 1950 they did do a similar sketch with "Niagara Falls" as the phrase that sets off Imogene! I'm pretty sure this particular pummeling accounts for the story Sid told someone I talked to: his wife wanted to know why he had bruises on his arms and shoulders! Imogene was small, but feisty. --kjh

      Sid Ceaser did a great Curly, and Imogene Coca did a great Moe, reviving the Stooges vaudeville Niagra Falls bit. Except their writers were clever enough to totally rewrite it, with all new dialog for NYC, but the same basic idea, the nut with the trigger phrase. This time its not "Niagra Falls, slowly I turned, Step By Step", its "He Changed, He Came Home Roaring Drunk". Also a great idea hitting him with his own hat, since she can whale at him all she wants, and it wont actually hurt if she connects, but it looks terrible.

    I used to watch Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca when i a child. i loved it then and, now watching this scene again, I'm still madly in love with it. just one change. now i see Sid trough a woman's eyes instead of a child's. He really gets to me :) i miss these kinds of shows so much. thank you RUclips and kjh. just wonderful to see these two. She was marvelously funny. (Hope you have the one that was a take off of, i believe, On the Beach. Imogene kept getting a bucket of water thrown on her LOL

    • @sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250
      @sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250  3 года назад +4

      The one with the buckets of water is the takeoff of "From Here to Eternity," called "From Here to Obscurity." The beach scene is classic and their reactions to the first dousing are genuine--they weren't expecting that much water and it was also apparently cold. If this link doesn't work, just do a search on the channel page: ruclips.net/video/tultp0xOml8/видео.html Glad you're enjoying the sketches and, yes, Sid had killer eyes :). IMO, He and Imogene were the best male-female comedy duo ever. --kjh

      Thanks so much for sharing your perspective on this marvelous sketch. Thanks to my Grandparents, I also grew up loving Sid & "Immy" (and so wish that they were better remembered). However, viewing these sketches now -- as you beautifully said, "from a woman's perspective" -- Sid also gets to me. The man really had it goin' on -- I daresay he was one of the sexiest TV stars of all time. Thanks so very much for posting this timeless clip.

    I believe Sid Caesar actualky started his showbiz career as a musician, and only entered comedy accidentally when a straight man was needed for some Catskills sketches. So it's not surprising that he excelled at playing it straight as a foil for the incomparable Imogene. And, boy, was Sid ever hot! Honestly, if I were having the worst day of my life, having him bound on the scene would be a dream come true. Thanks so much for posting!

    • @sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250
      @sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250  3 года назад +1

      Yes, he played sax in house bands, but wanted to try to get into acts with the resident comics and straight man provided an opportunity. He later said that it also paid better and provided more opportunities to meet girls. Of course, he then began to develop routines of his own and comedy began to predominate over music (although he never gave up the saxophone entirely). On YSOS, he always seemed willing to be a straight man if the situation called for it, a reflection perhaps of the fact he wasn't a stand-up comedian who always wanted the best lines but rather a comic actor who was skilled in ensemble playing. ---kjh

    Something I don't think I had ever noticed before...while Sid in these early years, appears to have a full head of hair (perhaps thinning a bit up front), he also seems to have a slight balding spot in the back top as seen when on the floor being assaulted by Imogene...over the ensuing years of course most of Sid's mane began to disappear....

    Every “live” comedy entertainment show can trace its roots back to “Your Show of Shows.” Back in the early 1950’s everything was done live in front of a real audience-no “laugh tracks.” Part of the genius of the show were its stellar cast of supporting actors and legendary writers (Carl Reiner, Howard Morris, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Mel Tolkin, Jose Ferrer). BTW, this was a 90-minute LIVE show, not just a standard one hour production, which made it all the more remarkable. Later shows, such as “Laugh-In” and “Saturday Night Live” were all 60-minute productions, and eventually ended up being prerecorded for convenience. Cheers.

    Sid is amazing here. By the way, authorship the original Niagara Falls/Slowly I Turned sketch has been variously attributed to either Sid Fields or Joey Faye. That version itself may have been a reworking of even earlier material- we'll probably never know.

      I know. I've seen them do this routine in one of their short subject films, called "Gents Without Cents," in which "Curly" Howard was the innocent victim being pummeled by Moe, and then by Larry.
      This two-reeler was made in 1944, which was the same year that Abbott and Costello did a variation of the skit in a film entitled "Lost In A Harem," in which the offending word is not "Niagara Falls," but "Pokomoko."
      Several years later, A & C performed the sketch again, on their television sitcom "The Abbott And Costello Show," in which Sidney Fields (who usually played their cranky landlord, Mr. Fields) played the crazed derelict who goes berserk at the mention of a certain praise, here changed back to "Niagara Falls."
      The 3 Stooges also did the "Niagara Falls" bit on an episode of "The Ed Sullivan Show." By this time, the third stooge was not "Curly" Howard, who had passed away in 1952, or his brother "Shemp" Howard, who replaced "Curly" when he took sick in 1946, and stayed on with Moe Howard (who was Curly's and Shemp's brother) and Larry Fine, until his own death in 1955, or Joe Besser, who replaced "Shemp" in 1956, and remained the third stooge for only two years. By now, Stooge number three was Joe DeRita, better known as "Curly Joe," because of his slight resemblance to the late "Curly" Howard.
