- Travis Fimmel has been announced as the 2017 Actor of the Year at the GQ Men of the Year awards in Sydney, in association with Qantas.
The farm-raised Victorian secured a flight to Ireland - and the biggest role of his career, as stoic Scandi-warrior Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings - by having a friend film an audition tape in a farm kitchen.
The hit TV series is treasured by critics for arresting cinematography, purist character arcs and a refreshing absence of gratuitous T&A. Not surprisingly, it is coming into its fifth season. But for all of the acclaim, Fimmel remains humble and seems to be driven by a desire to go unnoticed.
The former underwear model-turned-actor is one of the shyest, most un-actorly actors and prefers to live his life out of the spotlight, on his ranch just outside of LA. This natural stillness and reticence has morphed Fimmel into a beacon of Brando-esque broodiness onscreen, and is seen in his Vikings character as Fimmel conveys intensity and internal conflict through his highly expressive eyes. He lets his expressions and gestures say it all, which explains why Vikings is so much Fimmel's show and why Fimmel is our GQ actor of the year.

Nilrebave I've been working with a director (that also acts) that in person is very shy, but on stage he's "loud" and not shy at all.

Acting Ragnar Lothbrok is not enough to get an Oscar. He acted in really baaaaad movies. Really bad. He's stucked in Ragnar but he's not a great actor otherwise. You have to watch Oscar movies before you want him to get an Oscar, after that you should decide he deserves or not.

I love how he disdains fame and the shallowness around his chosen profession of acting. He is wise to know it’s all bullshit. I think he strives to match his skills or talents with his looks. He despises being valued or judged based on looks alone. Methinks production companies need to rethink having him do promotional stints. He’s kind of painful to watch when he’s himself. He always seems like he’s holding himself back from telling the world what he really thinks. Overall, I like him.

I bought the DVD at Amazon and just watched it tonight. Danger Close was a good movie. Travis did a splendid job portraying Major Smith and apparently it's a true story. It was action packed and held my attention te whole movie.
