@@dancingpianofairy at my local second hand store. I was rather surprised at the newness of it. So asked about the price and she said 50.00 I said oh, and kinda drifted off. About 5 or ten minutes later another lady who I later found out to be the manager came to me and asked if 35.00 would be ok. I said yes and got it. I was and have used it when my chair needed maintenance. But the main reason was to have a chair to use by a disability group I was with to put people in and take them around and show them how things they would not give any thought to would become a barrier to one using a wheelchair. Worked rather well, maybe to well. After a small tour of not so friendly areas, one gentleman, previous city council member left half way through and said he had seen enough and understood. Well, later I found out he went to the hospital. I learned nothing else but sure makes me wonder. Anyway, I got it more by pure luck.

you know what tho, those rear anti-tipper mounts are pretty handy. If you put the anti-tipper rods in upside down, then they kinda stick out the back a bit like two arms, and that might seem useless, but think about this: you just did some shopping, you got some big bags hanging off the back of the chair full of bread or whatever, those two rods will help keep the bags from falling on to the wheels and rubbing. That little hack made my life a lot easier when doing weekly grocery shops.

I occasionally 'reward' myself with a mild binge of something I like on that list maybe one day a week. Loosing those extra pounds makes me otherwise healthier (heart, kidneys, etc.) and makes getting around so much easier. I just bought myself 20 hours at the swimming pool..👍

In the 2 years I used it, I basically took that chair apart and reassembled it to find the seat position, center of gravity, and other adjustments that worked best for me.

That's a good chair! When I was a volunteer driver for people with mobility issues I saw a lot of different models. We had one customer who had a cheap one you can buy in the supermarket, ok, she couldn't afford a better one, and I pushed her around our mediaeval town, and of course she was complaining about every bump. A lot of people buy these cheap one when the parents get a bit elderly and do not walk well anymore, but they are so basic, I would not want to sit in one of those either! One does need a seatbelt and arm rest on those, as most people do not know how to handle a wheelchair, and I have seen plenty of elderly holding on tight whilst they are nearly being tipped out going down a curb forwards (as their pusher had no training on how to push).

  • @tamberjune

This is awesome. The first thing I did, when I was able to be more independent, was to lose the armrest and side guards. Now, I need side guards to protect my beautiful clothes! It was really cool to see you working on it and showing us that it's not that crazy. I really think that our community would rather the old chair go to someone who needs it at a decent price, than for us all to have to buy new for backups every time we get one or need changes.
My mom got her quickie built better for me that way. Put parts together.
    Thanks again!

Great find! Haha I repositioned the centre of gravity and took the anti-tip bar off my chair right away so I could jump up curbs etc and when I took it in for a warranty repair the dude was seriously concerned that it wasn't there. It makes it hard to load into my car or to go pretty much anywhere. I've only fallen once in the year I've had my chair and it scared me more than anything. But ... given buddy's response to its absence, I suspect that most people are more prudent and leave it attached. That surprised me.

  • @SnowySpiritRuby

I have to do pretty much all of my own repair and maintenance work (minus ordering certain parts) because the nearest tech to me that my insurance covers is 2 1/2 hours away and he only comes to my town once a week - a day and time when I'm almost always working - so I have to be pretty much self sufficient with this sort of thing. I learned how to do my own work when I was fitting my previous chair to me (hand-me-down from a relative, so no insurance or anything to cover anyone coming to do work on it for me) - if I'm not careful about how much I do, my hands and wrists hurt for weeks after (suspected EDS), but regardless, I have the knowledge, skill, and tools (or almost all of them - I think I'm only missing one thing) to do it all myself.

I was so lucky to be given the chair of my dreams by a place that took wheelchair and walker and cane donations. One day I called them to see if it was ever possible to get a power chair, even if it was really old. They told me they had a brand new $10,000.00 power chair with the tags on it that I could have. This chair lays down, which is perfect, because I have POTS. It also raises up high so I can reach things I normally couldn’t. Someone had donated it bc their spouse just got it, but then passed away before having the chance to use it.

I'm riding an electric. A couple of years ago I had to replace a burnt out electrical plug and thought the price I was quoted was ridiculous "over $200", lucky my father is an electrical engineer and with some phone calls for advice and photos as I was pulling it apart, I was able to fix the electrical plug and put it back together and it's worked since. It costed me all of $4.50 for the part I needed.
I'm a woman. I guess he thought I couldn't fix it myself and I would be back begging for him to fix it, but I wasn't paying over $200 for it when I knew that was a rip off.

Mine consists only of a tool roll a family member sewed up a pair of adjustable wrenches, 2 sets metric alan keys, 3 in 1 oil and a tube of lock tight. I can literally tear down my entire chair with that and put it back together with that

Waiting for insurance is the hugest hassle. I used to compete as a powerlifter so Im not a small guy but even more so I'm still somewhat as strong, so I create a lot of torque on a chair because of my strength. Been using a manual wheelchair part-time for about six and a half months now... I had been using a second-hand Quickie 2, but last month, found a damn good bargain on Kijiji - a 2014 Quickie Q7, with E-Motion power-assist wheels, and all still in great condition, for only $50! This thing new was probably worth close to $10,000 Canadian! One of the tires needed to be replaced, and the seller (who probably didn't realize the true value of this 'chair) couldn't find the charger, but still, I bought it, and as soon as I got it home from the seller's location in Montreal, picked up a set of Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, and this Q7 has been awesome so far. Keeping my Quickie 2 as a) a backup, and b) an "off-road" or "trail" 'chair... I put knobby tires on the 2 a couple of months before I scored the Q7.

Nice little set of knobby tires on that one. GOOD Allen wrenches and socket along with good screwdrivers are essential! It’s tempting to buy the Allen wrenches that come all attached like a pocket knife. Small size and easy to stow, but simply will not reach in some tight spaces. Because of the holder. The price difference between good and bad is a couple of cups of coffee at Starbucks.

I know what you mean.. i know how to work on my wheelchair as well. I had to take mine completely apart because i had to have my frame welded. To save myself some money they said it had to be completely stripped down etc. Other wise it would cost me more for them to stripe it down. So once the frame was welded back. I had to put it all back together again. To be honest with you it was kinda fun to do. Buy doing that it saved me $3,400 for a new chair. Saved me $200 for them to strip it down and weld it. In the end it only cost me $40 😊😊😊

I got a quickie 2, like brand new, barely used for $500, with all the upgrades it had it would have cost over $3000 - my only complaint about it really is that the center of gravity is still too far back even with it moved all the way forward, and it's not very easy for me to push (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and I have a lot of problems with my wrists/shoulders). Solution- got a smartdrive 2nd hand on ebay and that fixes that problem! I wish I could do without the arm rests but I can't :( It definitely would reduce the weight a whole lot for me.

Richard, is there any way to convert a chair with footrest like that to one similar to yours? I know the x-frame makes it complicated but u can't afford a rigid frame chair.

I see wheelchairs are just like bikes in that they can cost way more than my 2004 corolla. I'll never understand that.
