Machiya uses a "noh" mask with two expressions, he looks up the mask is angry, he looks down the mask is bland.
Wagakki Band constantly puts together grate shows, One of Japan's most popular bands at the moment. Everyone is professional on their instruments, All songs are good, no one is equal, Metal, rock, jazz, ballads, funny songs, sad songs, etc.
WGB is an 8 piece band:
Yuko Suzuhana - Shigin, vocals (Founder of WGB)
    Machiya - guitar, vocals (Arrangement)
Beni Ninagawa - tsugaru shamisen (Three strings (guitar looks like))
Kiyoshi Ibukuro - koto (Japanese National Instrument)
    Asa - bass
Daisuke Kaminaga - Shakuhachi (Bamboo Flute)
    Wasabi - drums
Kurona - wadaiko, Taiko (Traditional Drums)
    Can highly recommend:
    "Hotarubi" Premium symphonic night Vol.2
    "Ignite" Manatsu and Daishinnenkai 2020
"Iroha Utha" Manatsu no Daishinnenkai 2020

Machiya has several custom made guitars. Here I think he is using 5 fret extended 29 fret guitar, looking like a spear. All of his guitar has specific names like Japanese samurai’s sword….In his philosophy, it is a sin to waste other musician’s and audience time by changing his guitar. So he is trying to go with one guitar by changing capo position as much as possible.

@@terry2276 He typically uses guitars with, as you said, 29 frets. They're made by Sago and are called baritone guitars. I've seen him using standard 22 or 24 fret guitars a few times, not including his acoustic guitars, but that's rare. Machiya is one of the very few guitarists I've seen doing slap guitar; usually that's reserved for bass guitarists.

Thanks for mentioning the mask. There's a reaction channel that I don't watch anymore that claimed that it was a kabuki mask. I replied that it was a noh mask, yet in the next video the reactor is telling his daughter that it's a kabuki mask. It was annoying.

Their traditional vibe of Japanese folklore is nice.

The first song "homura" is in Japanese
    It means flame, but figuratively,
it also means burning your heart with resentment, anger, jealousy, etc.
It expresses the intense and dark feelings of such a human being.
The second song, "akatuki no ito,"
is a lyrics that expresses the wish that the Wagakki Band's music will reach overseas across the sea across the rainbow.

You had the best reaction I have seen to Wagakki Band. I only found them in May and have eatched their videos for a few hours every day. I would suggest "Sesameyuki" which is composed by the guitarist, Machiya. Also, "Yosiwara Lament" composed by the bassist, Asa.
Every member is a master of their instruments and compose. Yuko, the singer, put the band together and often performs sword/fan dance at their concerts. She is a master Shigin singer which is an ancient Japanese chanting of poetry with vibrato.
I think they all are amazing!

Yes, Beni kicks ass on the shamisen. Try playing a fretless, 3-string Japanese banjo with a putty knife and producing hard rock.

Let's talk about the instruments used in this band.
About Wagakki Band's instruments (sorry for the long sentences)
"WA" means Japan. "GAKKI" is a musical instrument.
    (1) "KOTO" (a large, flat instrument of about 6 feet)
The ancestors of "KOTO" came to Japan from China about 1300 years ago.
"KOTO" has been used without changing its shape.
The body is made of fine paulownia wood. A wave-shaped groove is carved on the back of the body. This is to make the sound sound like the inside of a violin. The strings are made of silk thread.
Put "Kotozume" on your fingertips and play the strings.
    (2) "Shamisen" (instrument like a banjo)
Generally, the "shamisen" is used as an accompaniment instrument for quiet and light songs. (Current ballads, songs like light pop)
However, performer Beni plays a special shamisen called "Tsugaru shamisen".
"Shamisen" is evolving in various styles all over the country. Among them, "Tsugaru Shamisen" has a fast and powerful sound and a unique playing style.
It seems that the reason why this style was created is that TSUGARU-SHAMISEN was born in the extremely cold region of northern Japan (Tsugaru: place name).
People with handicaps (mainly visually impaired) who lived in harsh natural environments lived. They earned money by letting people listen to songs and performances. They created a unique musical style to save their lives. It's instrument with a sad history.
    (3) "Wadaiko"
"WA (Japan)" + "TAIKO (drums)" = "WATAIKO". And the pronunciation changes from "WATAIKO" to "WADAIKO".
Like Shamisen, "Wadaiko" has evolved uniquely in various parts of Japan, and there are various playing methods.
There is a band called "Kodo" which is famous as a Japanese drum performance group. They are doing performance tours of Japanese drums all over the world.
If you are interested in WADAIKO, we recommend listening to the performance of "Kodo".
    (4) "SHAKUHACHI" (bamboo instrument like a flute)
Until about 60-70 years ago, units of length such as "Shaku" and "Sun" were used in Japan. (The pronunciation of "sun" is like a shortened version of "soon")
    1-shaku = 30.3cm (It's a coincidence that it's almost the same as 1 foot)
    1-sun = 3.03cm
    "Hachi" is the number "8".
And the average length of "SHAKUHACHI" is "1-shaku and 8-sun (about 56cm)". The "shaku and 8" part became the name of the instrument.
The material is cut from the base of the bamboo. It has a simple structure in which the material is dried, strain is removed, and the necessary finger holes are opened.
In order to make sound from a simple bamboo tube, it is necessary to control the delicate movements of the oral cavity and lips. It is said to be one of the most difficult Japanese musical instruments to learn.
One month after the beginners started practicing the shakuhachi, they sometimes hear stories such as "I was able to make something like a sound for the first time."
"From Japan" (This is a sentence using a translation app. I hope the intention is conveyed correctly).

enjoying your reaction from Japan (OvO)

  • @a_un
    @a_un 2 года назад +2

The following is just a trivia unrelated to reaction.
    About the mask(Noh-Men)worn by MACHIYA.
(Pronunciation of "Noh" is close to [No] of [Yes / No])
Guitarist MACHIYA wears a mask called "Noh-men" depending on the song. (Although he is processing to make a hole in a part of the mask ...)
"Noh-Men" is a special mask worn by actors when performing the traditional Japanese performing art "Noh".
"Noh" has a history of about 1300 years. It is a performing art that has been loved mainly by Japanese emperors, aristocrats, and high-class samurai.
The mask (Noh-Men) used in "Noh" is characterized by its expressionlessness.
For example, in Japan, a person who rarely expresses emotions with a face is called a "face like a Noh mask". (It's not a very good word).
However, "Noh-Men" does not deny feelings. It is said that emotions are expressed from the appearance of shadows that appear when the mask is exposed to light.
For example, when a weak light hits from above, it expresses sadness. Express anger when strong light hits from below ....
It seems that many people confuse "Noh" with "KABUKI".
"KABUKI" was born long after "Noh". It has a short history of about 400 years.
"KABUKI" is an entertainment born from the culture of the common people. At that time, it was mainly done by women. It is said that sexy dance choreography was common.
About 300 years ago, the government at that time tightened the crackdown on cultures that were ethically vulgar, and women were banned from playing. Therefore, Kabuki actors are still limited to men in the sense of inheriting historical culture.
Appeal is important when performing Kabuki, and exaggerated stage production, excessive make-up, and exaggerated facial expressions are preferred.
In other words, "Noh" requires a mask, and "KABUKI" does not use a mask.
"From Japan" (This is a sentence using a translation app. I hope the intention is conveyed correctly).

A great reaction! They are amazingly very good at metal, pops, punk, swing, and traditional. They are all masters of each instrument. The singer Yuko is an educated classic piano player, but also a mater of ancient poem narrative and folklore singing with strong vibrato. It is a big mastery how come they came across into this band!
    >>My Big problem is there are too many recommendable songs. As a festive and happy feeling song of highly meshed western and Japanese, I would recommend Hakushu Kasai. (Singing ‘whatever you are, I need you.. so a big applause and shout out to you!=Hakushu Kasai”) Or many people recommend Senbonzakura=1000 cherry trees, a folk metal punk with all instruments solos. And if you would like to enjoy and feel their western and Japanese performance separately, a consecutive two songs, “Chieno Kakitsu (Fruit of wisdom) + Somosan Seppa(monk’s calling to the pupil, Hey solve this problem) Hope one of these works. Hope other commenters’ recommendation is respected evenly, and you enjoy some of them! Note; Their music is better in concert than the studio version.

The only thing that could be labelled "idiotic" is someone ranting about video/format he watched although he (according to the rant) does not like that format.
Just do not watch things you know you are going to dislike...
