Gamma is one of the best written characters in sonic. Shadow is good too but his story gets muddled with every new game, gamma made his mark and left gracefully.
@@HyperSonic1999orJTH I don't disagree that Shadow is more interesting, but the whole Shadow Android thing was kinda pointless IMO. The Shadow in SA2 and the Shadow post Heroes are the same guy, Eggman was just lying to him about him being a clone/android.
Getting into Sonic in the 2010s was so hard because of Game Grumps and other anti Sonic movements. There really was a hoard of people out to call even the best Sonic games bad for some reason. So happy to see the love for Sonic Adventure, especially now that that era of Sonic is over. Thanks for the great video!
One of the small things I have always liked about Sonic Adventure is the various stories of the human citizens in Sation Square (and Mystic Ruins), as they complement the multiple perspectives you get from the playable characters and make the world feel more alive. You get to see their small struggles; from longing love, to gambling issues, to worker strikes, making it feel like everyone is having their own little adventure. Plus, many of them get unique dialogue depending on who you're playing, from being straightforward around Sonic, to being familiar around Amy (who lives there), to being scared by Gamma. It's a bunch of extra dialogue that most people will just skip over or won't keep track of as they follow the main story, and while not the deepest, it still gives extra value to the overworld beyond housing the level entrances and gives further replayability for the explorative types. It's almost like Majora's Mask, where you adventure to protect the destruction of a major location, having a bunch of side stories that flesh it out and make it feel worth saving. Though, unlike Majora's Mask, you tragically can't save Sation Square by the end, giving even those stories with a happy resolution a sadness, that all their efforts will be cut short, once you know the ending.
I love the idea that Gamma won the fight against Sonic and could have ended him right there before Amy stops him. Eggman unknowingly builds the machine to put an end to Sonic, but doesn't because it grew a heart. I look forward to more here.
Currently replaying this game again. It still holds up as my favorite sonic game, and hell, even one of my favorite games of all time. You can tell there was true passion poured into this game. Sonic Adventure is a true classic 🔥
For all the Sonic Adventure retrospectives out there, it's always nice to hear someone show their genuine appreciation for the game, because everyone seems to love this game for different reasons, which I honestly think makes it super fascinating. Examining the media we love from a personal standpoint always seems to dig up some great, unique angles. I know analytical content like retrospectives or video essays can feel like a whole new world compared to streaming, but I think you're on the right track. Sonic Adventures really needs to be appreciated, but instead of insulting the problems, it's better to talk about what needs to be improved for the next game.

Big's stages are so infamous, but I found them so quick and easy, I felt like I'd been gaslit by the whole internet.
SADX for GameCube was still decent, the problem is that each port supposedly further degraded the game. I remember the online community gaslighting fans of the Adventure Games throughout the 2010s from personal experience. I said the games were better than Generations & was banned for blasphemy.
I find it no coincidence that Gamma "died" the archie comics the same way Amy gave him life. He imparted Omega with a bit of his soul. Shadow was devastated that he failed to save another "living weapon" like himself. I love stories like this where robots gain feelings, and people influence them. It's akin to people irl. My favourite type of villain isn’t just one you can understand the good but misguided intentions, but ones where they are actually doing good things, like Griffith for example (spoilers ahead). Griffith made a a perfect kingdom that gave everyone who lives there good lives, but since he sacrificed a few dozen of his subordinates, Guts can never forgive him, even though Guts knows he is wrong in being driven by revenge
My favorite Sonic Game Of All Time just wish they didn't take out some of functions like they almost had Super Sonic outside of that 1 boss fight ( which if they do a remake they need to add that back). I’m glad you like my channel!! 😭 I’m going to keep improving, so thank you for watching and giving my video a chance!! I totally agree, the Adventure games are so charming and fun!
When I first saw Sonic Adventure on youtube back in 2009, I just knew I had to get the game ASAP. As a kid I had this habit of just running around in a video game because it's like being a part of it, particularly hub worlds like Mario 64 DS or Spyros. Sonic Adventure is no exception and the rest is really good. And your retrospect is excellent! I'm looking forward to more of your content👍
When I was a kid I had this game. I always bemoaned that I didn’t have adventure 2 (which was the one I always heard people talk about) but nowadays I prefer 1. It’s such an interesting marker of change in the franchise, and not just in the jump to 3D. In some ways, it has more in common with the genesis games than the games that succeeded it
I'm watching all of these videos. For being new to this, you're a solid natural, and your voice pairs super well for video commentaries. LOOOOVE this channel.
It's easy to appreciate "Sonic Adventure" simply for taking the series in a more story-driven direction. A University tutor taught me that stories can be used to contextualise gameplay variety - a design choice prevalent throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. The variety in this game is justified (except for Big's interchangeable presence), even though many of them lack depth or polish. Still, playing through the whole story the first time is a mostly entertaining experience, and the extra content keeps replay value decently high.
Adventure has remained my favorite Sonic game throughout my entire life. I grew up with my father's Dreamcast through the late 2000s, and I still replay OG Adventure every now and again because it's so cozy and comforting. Call it nostalgia, but I will always love this game for its story, gameplay, style, and all the other reasons you and so many others love this game. This was a super short and sweet video about your experience and opinions with the game. I hope you find more success with these videos and continue to grow!
Tysm!! I’m slowly working on getting better at writing longer videos and it makes me happy people are still enjoying these even though they’re short!! It’s def a learning process, so I appreciate the kind words!
I love Crush40's Sonic soundtracks so much. I've been meaning to play this game for so long, as I love sonic even though I'm not a huge gamer. This was a pretty neat video! You deserve more subs!
This is a really good video! Sonic Adventure honestly gets my respect for making the Adventure formula and set the tone going forward for more in-depth stories than the likes Mario had at the time. (I wasn't alive during the 90s, so this is pure observation here.) Plus, with Sonic Adventure, we wouldn't have gotten Sonic Adventure 2. Which has freakishly good storytelling. With the movie and Sonic X Shadow Generations coming up, I am curious if where they'll go from there. :)
I can't believe how well SADX holds up to this day! I think most people remember SA2B, but this one feels so much more nostalgic. It still kind of feels "classic Sonic" enough while transitioning to 3D. Great video, Yewf! 🌟
Well, it took 20+ years for Sega to give us the backstory of Chao and Chaos in the form of the Ancients in Sonic Frontiers; still hoping that they'll bring back the Chao more prominently in future games. My favourite part about Sonic Adventure is glitching the game, going out of bounds to get characters into levels that they are not supposed to be in (e.g Tails/Knuckles in Emerald Coast, Amy in Casinopolis etc). On the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions, it's possible to get Tails into the At Dawn section of Speed Highway, the route Sonic usually takes (but it was patched in the 2004 PC version onwards). Also, there's interesting lore about the game's development and content that were removed from the final game, such as the unfinished dragon boss in Sky Chase, and early versions of Windy Valley which looked completely different.
Sonic Adventure is one of my favorite games ever and I think part of that (besides nostalgia) comes down to the different stories and gameplay styles each of them have. A lot of them are enjoyable to me. Also the music really helps to immerse me every time too xD
I would always glitch tails into emerald Coast. The best thing about this game in my opinion is the music, like starting from Adventure 1 they locked in so much even into the GameCube era. Why is mega collection music soooo good
Really good retrospective. I love hearing your views on the game. I have a soft spot for SA1 as well. The game felt like a nice 3D spin to Sonic overall, and we got to play as the other characters. I also feel as if this was the first Sonic game where we saw personalities from the characters, and it made for some really heartwarming stories. Sorry to make this a long comment. I’ve thought about making a retrospective of SA1/SADX on my channel as well.
I played Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast and loved it. I always sucked at the 2D classic Sonic games, since you needed tight controls to weave across the stage and getting the Chaos Emeralds was necessary to progress, which I could never get. Sonic Adventure having simpler gameplay made it immediately accessible and the story was incredible. Aged like milk in the graphics department, especially in the ports for Gamecube and Steam, but it’s still a comfort game.
I'm planning to binge watch every video you ever made tomorrow because they all coincidentally appeal to me for some reason. Glad we share similiar interests and hope you continue making interesting content like this!
Best sonic adventure retrospective video I’ve ever seen keep up the amazing work😄 also I’d love to see a vid about sonic adventure 2 cause clearly your the best at retrospective vids
this was a great video to get in my recommendations! admittedly i've been coming around on this game after finding it a bit weak upon recent playthroughs, but i keep coming back to it regardless and it's interesting to see different outlooks on it. where i once saw multiple playstyles as a lack of focus, it's just as easy to see it as variety. food for thought, and i actually really appreciated the short length. us fellow youtubers can get caught up in yapping a bunch but a nice sub-10 minute video's great to see. looking forward to more
I've been a Sonic fan ever since I was little, and I've come to notice more in-depth stuff more as I grow older and find more enjoyment with Sonic Adventure. I honestly can't think about a life where Sonic doesn't exist. Also amazing video! Keep up the great work 🤩
I just played SA1 earlier this year and had a blast with it. I enjoyed levels like Emerald Coast, Windy Valley, and Speed Highway, and I even kinda liked the Big The Cat Levels. It’s great to hear this game get recognized till this day, considering how old this game is! Great video. You’re gonna get a lot of people watching your vids. I’d also like to hear your retrospective on SA2 if you played it yet.
I was the opposite of you where I was a big Mario fan growing up and not so much Sonic, but I was a huge fan of the Sonic Adventure games and they are still some of my favorite games that I love going back to replay every now and then.
Rare W youtube recommendation! I don't play many sonic games but I have played Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 and I have always loved those games and still do to this day. Sure there's some stuff that could have been better in SA1 but damn did I love just exploring the overworld to go to each zone and just having a blast exploring and getting unlockables
My favorite thing about the adventure games is the style and atmosphere, the characters were fun, had this cool edge, and played off each other well. The soundtrack and sound design also made you feel like you were on a lighthearted adventure. Even when the story got serious it keeps that same edge. The newer games, specifically the 2010's feel like they're going through an identity crisis. The characters feel like parodies of themselves, the story and atmosphere feels incredibly safe. Even frontiers, while I enjoyed the gameplay the characters just felt so muted. When I think of Sonic the hedgehog, Sonic adventure is the first thing that comes to my mind.
I also like how Gamma’s story carries some of the nature versus technology themes from the old games, with the machine learning to value life above his own programming.
I just played SA1 for the first time this year and it instantly became one of my favorite Sonic games. The soundtrack is unmatched and the story of Chaos and the echidnas was really captivating. And I found every character fun to play as even Big.
E102 Gamma was the best character in Sonic Adventure. His story being so bitter sweet as he chooses to destroy himself to be rid of the E-Series robots has stuck with me ever since I played this game back in 2011. I love that Sega and Sonic team stuck to his death too. The Gamma we see in Sonic adventure is gone and will never appear. I have to wonder how the Sonic Franchise would look if they had stuck to their plans of having Shadow die at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 despite fan outcry for him to return.
Sonic Adventure is that game that works as a time capsule, i remember completing the game and just keep exploring Station Square, wondering if could get out of bounds, mission mode i know some hate but it gave me more reasons to keep returning, the music, seeing if the Burguer Guy and Shy Girl started dating, Tails arc, little details that just made me happy I might prefer other Sonic games in design, but Sonic Adventure is like a living memory
Great video! I think Sonic Adventure was the most impactful Sonic game for me also. It had the most impressive transition from 2D to 3D back when I first played it near release. Even more so than Super Mario 64 did. I loved that the characters talked to one another for the first time in the game continuity. There was plenty to do with the six playable characters in the hub world and the stages. Not to mention the Chao Garden where I did take considerable time to raise the Chao and won all of the races to aquire all of the emblems. I had very fond memories of the game back then. Sonic Adventure sits in my top ten of the franchise, if not the top five.
Sonic Adventure DX for PC was one of my first videogames ever played. I really enjoyed it as a child and from time to time I play it again ;D. Nowadays, 20 years later, I still listen the songs and the OST
Really underrated channel and video. Takes me back to when I was a kid and enjoyed watching Sonic Adventure's full story for about 6 hours on youtube and it was so amazing to see. I think this is probably one of the best Sonic Games without a doubt and I love how well executed the video was in portraying how amazing the game was too. Earned a new subscriber ❤
Your retrospective is probably what I'll remember as the thing that will/did push me to do my own. I've wanted to for some time (one on Crash Bandicoot 1 - Team Racing) being inspired by other creators, but the ones I found were more often than not 1+ hours long, but your video is much shorter and gets your passionate points across and I thank you for that. I feel the longer 'spectives show passion too, but that's not to say I put less value on your's. Knowing your a new face also makes me think I can do this too! Thanks again. I think my favorite memory with SA1 was finally collecting all the emblems and unlocking Metal Sonic. I adore the way the characters control, and this game gave me a newfound appreciation for Amy, hence why I was so hyped for her return in Frontiers.
E-102 Gamma's story in Sonic Adventure was my personal favorite, both to play and to just experience in general. I'm a sucker for robots gaining humanity, experiencing emotions, and making decisions based on how they feel rather than how they're programmed. I just wish E-123 Omega had as much narrative depth as Gamma, but Sega and Sonic Team would have to actually include him in stuff for that to happen.
I grew up with this game and it was the first Sonic game I really loved (was always crap at the 2d ones). The soundtrack is AMAZING!! The cutscenes have aged but back in 99 that demo scene of them all on the Egg Carrier looked so atmospheric to me. Side note but i adore the Egg Carrier theme, might be my favourite Sonic music ever made honestly. Idk i could go on for so long about this game that it could be its own video too lol. If it wasnt for Big this would be my GOAT Sonic game
Being a fan since emulating Sonic 2 in the early 2000's and Mega Collection (i was born in 98), Adventure was a big hit with me and well being well versed in 3D games like SM64, Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, Rayman 2 and Spyro (even though im a dunce when playing but thats besides the point) made me appreciate it even more. Gamma's story is just downright cinema for the time and it actually made me care for him so much...now for Big i can live without him. SA1 is my favorite videogame OST period with it doesn't matter, Open your heart, unknown from M.E., Azure Blue World, Sky Deck A Go Go, Speed Highway, At Dawn Speed Highway and Pleasure Castle being my all time highlights. It was refreshing to see someone do a retrospective that's just pointing why they love it instead of just bashing it for some...cuestionable choices. You have my like and i guess a sub too greetings from Paraguay wish you the best on this!
Good video. I played this when it was released and it definitely is an awesome game! I still love the way Sonic, Tails, & Knuckes control in the Dreamcast verion of this game. Still the best in this series.
A truncated Sonic Adventure retrospective? Nice, those are rare. An up and coming channel? Subscribed. By far, though, the best aspect of this is your tone of voice. You’re just so pleasant and sweet and genuine. You sound like the friend at conventions that bakes cupcakes for her friends that are attending said convention. Definitely a plus! And I quite literally have almost the exact same praise and grievances for Sonic Adventure! (Also, yes - E102 Gamma is painfully underrated as a character, despite his shortlived campaign) Chaos is most certainly a victim lashing out because of the actions of others, and I didn’t understand that until I got older and replayed it. Perspective! And you can definitely see that without Sonic Adventure, Sonic Team couldn’t possibly have the groundwork with which to build Frontiers - crazy how things go full circle! Fantastic video! Hopefully, there will likewise be one for Sonic Adventure 2! 🙂🙂🙂
I remember buying a Dreamcast JUST to play Sonic Adventure. I've loved Sonic all my life, I was a Sega fanboy and Sonic Adventure was the game I really looked forward to around the time it was released and ohh boy was it SO fun when I first got it. The Chao raising, the new villain, the way the game finally broke into another dimension with polygons... it was the complete package, and I hardly played another Dreamcast game outside of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. The theme song and character songs are a jam to listen to and the hype when the Chaos boss against Super Sonic with Open Your Heart playing was something I will never get again in any videogame. Of course, we met while you played Sonic Adventure on stream, it is always special to me on this note in regards to us. I grew up without a single soul with the same passion for the blue blur around so I'm always so happy when I find people who love Sonic as much as I do and the deepest regret for me is I wasn't able to see your reaction for the huge Sonic statue I built in your Minecraft server.
I like this style of retrospective! Its definitely not as long as other ones on youtube but the way your video was different by showing a new approach.
Played the Toys R Us Emerald Coast demo back when it was coming out. Blew me away, especially the killer whale section. The music, the characters and stages, the "screw it, we'll add fishing to the game" ambition is all super charming. Today I still defend the Sonic stages and how he feels to play, it's one of the best 3D Sonic games in that part for me.
Sonic adventure did so much right I love the story and lore we got for this game just adding more to it with some questions being answered and some left for future titles while also in some way answering questions we had and to this day its music is by far amazing for sonics first game on the dreamcast the only downside for me was Big's gameplay of fishing but still with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Gamma stories we have great stories and nice returning elements plus a compelling story while trying to stop Dr Robotnik we now have to stop Chaos overall the story was jaw dropping along with the level selections.
i haven't played much of this one, but the remaster of 2 on gamecube was always on during summer break; we'd turn our big crt tv out the window to face the porch, and my brother, myself, and our friends would take turns playing the rail grind races against each other late into the night.
Bro Crush 40 murdered the hell out of Open Your Heart!, I remember blasting that song with my siblings back in the day, that was my favorite part of my childhood. Love your video btw ❤

Tysm!! I’m glad you enjoyed!!!
Thank you so much 😭 I hope to keep getting better as I go!!!
I swear, playing as Amy getting chased by that green robot gave me PTSD as a child 😅
The best 3D Sonic game to this day.
Well, some might give that title to Adventure 2, Unleashed, etc.
Sonic Adventure was every 2000s Sonic fan's Canon Event.
Iv'e seen so many retrospects on Sonic Adventure, and I just never get tired of them. The game with mods just gives a whole different feeling
I liked the atmosphere and level design. The music was really cool, too.
Tysm!! I was at like 130 subs before this video, I’m really appreciative of how many people have subscribed from this video 😭
This is a really good video!
Sonic Adventure honestly gets my respect for making the Adventure formula and set the tone going forward for more in-depth stories than the likes Mario had at the time. (I wasn't alive during the 90s, so this is pure observation here.)
Plus, with Sonic Adventure, we wouldn't have gotten Sonic Adventure 2.
Tysm!!! I’m glad people are enjoying it 😭😭😭 thank you!!
SA1 is my comfort game, and I really enjoyed this video! Subscribed!
Tysm!! I’m glad you liked it!!
Sonic Adventure is one of my favorite games ever and I think part of that (besides nostalgia) comes down to the different stories and gameplay styles each of them have. A lot of them are enjoyable to me. Also the music really helps to immerse me every time too xD
Same!! A big thing for me was definitely the variety! And the music slaps!!
I would always glitch tails into emerald Coast. The best thing about this game in my opinion is the music, like starting from Adventure 1 they locked in so much even into the GameCube era. Why is mega collection music soooo good
please make longer videos, i could listen to you talk about some game, anime, or art for much longer than 7 minutes
In my day sonic was 2D and we were grateful to even have that second dimension!!
CALM DOWN GRANDPA
I prefer him in 2D myself and when Mania came out it was the most goated game cause we had a little taste of that in Generations (4 was trash though)
This game is so nostalgic I remember playing this.
Remember YewfNotes. You gotta OPEN YOUR HEAAAAAAAAART
YESSS! Sonic Adventure on the Sega Dreamcast (a 1999 release in PAL regions) was everything! 🙌🏿
I love this game so much from the characters and story to the gameplay and especially the music. I think Red Mountain gotta be my favourite.
Based
Gamma always brings a tear to my eyes, love his story. Love this game and watching you play it.
It was such a great story!!! 😭😭😭
I'm planning to binge watch every video you ever made tomorrow because they all coincidentally appeal to me for some reason. Glad we share similiar interests and hope you continue making interesting content like this!
Also Gamma holds a special place in my heart and I still prefer him to Omega even though I like both very much.
I’ll do my best to make plenty of interesting content and improve in any way I’m able! 💪 this comment made me super happy!!
I love both SA games, wishing only that SA2 had more intermission and walking around.
Best sonic adventure retrospective video I’ve ever seen keep up the amazing work😄 also I’d love to see a vid about sonic adventure 2 cause clearly your the best at retrospective vids
this was a great video to get in my recommendations! admittedly i've been coming around on this game after finding it a bit weak upon recent playthroughs, but i keep coming back to it regardless and it's interesting to see different outlooks on it. where i once saw multiple playstyles as a lack of focus, it's just as easy to see it as variety. food for thought, and i actually really appreciated the short length. us fellow youtubers can get caught up in yapping a bunch but a nice sub-10 minute video's great to see. looking forward to more
“What should we use for CD’s boss music?”
“I dunno, how about that stuff we use to torture war prisoners?”
I came across this channel you’re so underrated and I love this game, just finished it yesterday. That was a great video you deserve a thousand subs!
Tysm!!! 😊
My earliest memory as a kid is falling asleep and waking up on Casinopolis 😆
I remember when i used to mod the game to have Dark Sonic, those were great times
When it comes to Sonic games, I will always go back to Adventure, and Adventure 2 Battle!
Yeah I will definitely do an SA2 video!! Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!!
Gammas theme is a bop I didn't really appreciate it until I got older
Thank you for the awesome video! There's plenty of videos talking about sonic adventure 2, so it's great to see sonic adventure getting some love
Sonic Adventure is that game that works as a time capsule, i remember completing the game and just keep exploring Station Square, wondering if could get out of bounds, mission mode i know some hate but it gave me more reasons to keep returning, the music, seeing if the Burguer Guy and Shy Girl started dating, Tails arc, little details that just made me happy
I might prefer other Sonic games in design, but Sonic Adventure is like a living memory
This was literally the first game ive ever played next to pkmn stadium. Top 5 game ever for me ever since.
I had the exact same experience as a kid, born and played the same games in the same timeframe
Nice video definitely underrated, I kinda like how short the videos are and not drawn out and long like most retrospectives, awesome work!
Yeah it's my favorite Sonic game. Yes, I like it more than Adventure 2.
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you liked the video, Sonic Adventure doesn’t get enough credit I feel like so I wanted to do a positive video!! 😊
Good video. I played this when it was released and it definitely is an awesome game!
I still love the way Sonic, Tails, & Knuckes control in the Dreamcast verion of this game. Still the best in this series.
very wholesome and well made video ! i hope you talk about more sonic games you played in the future!
(Also, yes - E102 Gamma is painfully underrated as a character, despite his shortlived campaign)
Chaos is most certainly a victim lashing out because of the actions of others, and I didn’t understand that until I got older and replayed it. Perspective!
And you can definitely see that without Sonic Adventure, Sonic Team couldn’t possibly have the groundwork with which to build Frontiers - crazy how things go full circle!
Fantastic video! Hopefully, there will likewise be one for Sonic Adventure 2! 🙂🙂🙂
Aw thanks for the sweet comment 😭🩷 that was really nice to wake up to!! I’ll definitely be doing one on SA2!!
saved my life, thank you
The soundtrack is my favorite thing about this game.
That Sonic CD boss music made me hide under my blanket because I’d get soo scared 😭
Just played sonic adventure its great. Gamma's story is my favorite too! Awsome video!👍
It’s honestly a lot of fun running around every level. This one isn’t my favorite sonic game but it’s right up there
I love your videos and perspective.
Thank you!!
Starting your channel with Sonic Adventure love AND Pokemon Hoenn love? You're all right.
really wished this lvl of care and love was in sonic games after unleashed/2010s wouldve definetly made for more emotional depth to the characters
Both adventure games are definitely one of my faves and I just remembered I still haven't done all those missions in SA1 or 2
I like this style of retrospective! Its definitely not as long as other ones on youtube but the way your video was different by showing a new approach.
Thank you!! I def am practicing writing more fleshed out scripts, but I’m glad people are enjoying what I’ve done so far!!
It just looks so good, and more after seeing Jehtt videos 😅
Bro Crush 40 murdered the hell out of Open Your Heart!, I remember blasting that song with my siblings back in the day, that was my favorite part of my childhood. Love your video btw ❤
5:16 standing next to him flirtatiously.
