Easter in the belly of the earth

"Christ is Risen" was, for the diverse people who filled communist prisons, a sign that foreshadowed their own liberation. It happened in Gherla, in the camps at Canal or Periprava, where an isolated exclamation, in the darkness, from the heart of a prisoner, Christ is Risen, multiplied and encompassed the entire mass of inmates who, although without the light of the Resurrection or the mystery of the Eucharist (as they all fasted out of necessity), perhaps felt with greater strength than those outside the prison bars the liberating power of the Resurrection, for it concerned their own resurrection, that is, the redeeming light of freedom.
