      If I remember aright, it was C.S. Lewis who related the story of a man who prayed "Lord, give me patience!". Whereupon God gave him many things to be patient about. Lewis meant it to be true and humorous at the same time. Though I was not Orthodox when I heard it (years after his death), it has stuck with me for decades as a signpost of prayer and answers to prayer. It helped me avoid many pitfalls in life as I groped haltingly for prayer and answers, helping me finally to become Orthodox some 23 years ago (1999).
      Whereby we can see how, according to God's mercy, a prayer and joke by a non-Orthodox can lead a non-Orthodox to Orthodoxy, and how God is indeed in all places and fills all things. Glory to God for all things, and Lord, have mercy on me a sinner! May the prayers of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be pleasing unto you our God, and bear fruit in fertile soil. Amen. ☦🛐
      Many thanks, Father Seraphim.

      Dear Esmee, as Mary pointed out in her comment, patience - like all virtues - becomes real when it is given as a gift, a grace from the Holy Spirit. Until that moment, all we can do is force ourselves, to settle for patience as a struggle. Christ will step in - at the. right time - and turn this 'forced virtue' into something real, something alive.

    I can't believe this video was 3 years ago. It's just as you have said that there's nothing new about humanity. I woke up this morning frustrated and impatient. I knew I wasn't in a good frame of mind or heart to face the day. I needed some guidance, so I thought to myself, Let's see what Father Seraphim has to say about it, and here this video is, saying exactly what I needed to hear when I needed to hear it. It was the first video I found. Thank you for your insightful teachings! This has helped calm me and put me in the right state of mind and heart to be able to pray about this and to face my day! Thank you!

      He is risen indeed! Dear Antoaneta, patience feeds itself - it is like playing the piano or anything like that. The more we do it, the better we get at it and we slowly begin to see the results. And then, simply because we like the results, we want to practice even more. It is the same with patience - the more we try it, the more obvious become its spiritual benefits, which makes it easier in time. With God's help and a bit of will on our side, everything becomes possible.

    Thank you Father, I was just having this conversation with my mom. We are Inquiries and were raised Protestant. We also live in the US and are all about that quick fix. Patience is lacking in our lives.
    I've been noticing everything in my life currently is testing my patience and revealing just how impatient I am. I've been so terrible at staying in that place of tension. Prayer and repentence has helped.
    Perhaps Christ wants his people to learn how to be patient for a world that is the opposite? Perhaps this lockdown will lead his Church to be more effective ambassadors for him once this is all over, God willing.
    Thank you so much for your words and your prayers. God bless you. Christ has Risen!

    • @mullmonastery

      My dear Luke, I try to think often of all the examples when patience leads to life - seeds bursting into a tiny plant; a tree growing roots; an artist learning his skill; cartilages turning into bones; myself as a child gradually falling in love with maths after hating having to learn how to count. All these simple examples teach me that all good things require time - Christ allows things to be a certain way in this fallen world, so we may look at them and learn from them. If a tree needs to wait in order to develop roots (and only much later even consider baring fruit), the same applies to my spiritual life. If that tree were moved from place to place every time it got 'bored' in one place, it would never grow roots and it would die without even knowing its own fruit, without knowing itself. Christ is risen, dear one.

      Dear Marie, we are all affected in different ways by different passions. Similarly, we all respond differently to the same passion - spiritual life is entirely personal, we can try to learn from the experience of others, but only our own experience (trying and failing) will teach us what works and what does not work for us. For me, for instance, the thought of the pain and suffering of others (people who have incurable diseases, people in war zones, people who lose the ones they love, people who just find our that they are dying or that someone they love is dying etc) brings humility in my mind and I feel ashamed to even consider my own so-called 'tragedies'. Perspective helps me. It also helps me to pray for the world.

    Father, Christ is Risen.
    Patience is always a challenge and it is always good to be reminded and encouraged in the struggle. I have learnt an eminence amount of patience and perseverance in writing my PHD, along with self discipline. Academia can be a school of patience and forbearance with oneself along with the academic community. Just as there is not quick way to write a research project there is no quick way to acquire virtue or by grace reach salvation.

    • @mullmonastery
      @mullmonastery  4 года назад

      Truly He is. risen, dear one. You are right, academic work kills one if one does not develop patience. That being said, there is a difference between patience as applied to a 'created' activity, such as academia, and patience applied to a spiritual activity, such as prayer, for instance. They differ because their fruit differs (academia can lead to pride; pray leads mostly to humility) and that fruit then feeds back the patience itself and changes its spiritual 'shade'. Take good care, dear Phoebe.

    Thank you Fr. Seraphim for another powerfully profound, enlightening RUclips video. This topic was one I needed to hear. As usual your comments, which resonate in my brain and heart, tie into so many spiritual principals that I find it necessary to keep repeating this video to try, to just TRY to catch them all and then more importantly to REMEMBER them.
    I am a new convert to Orthodoxy, (almost 3 years) and was previously a Protestant, but I could never go back to anything else. My still short journey as been nothing but amazing to me!
    As a Christian, I mean well, but I often battle the “Giant of Forgetfulness”. Do you have an antidote for that? God Bless your work!

      I’ve heard that ‘we fast to help us overcome spiritual forgetfulness’. And I try to be obedient to that discipline. I am also grateful for your teaching videos. When I hear you I hear spiritual TRUTH: I KNOW it, I FEEL it but why is it so fleeting? Why can’t I retain it? I am still so, so woefully short on remembering and especially putting this WISDOM into actual practice. At times I feel my Christian life is like Christ’s parable of the seed that was eaten up by the birds. It scares me, too, because of the scripture, “To whom much has been given, much will be required.”

    It's impossible to have patience during work. Work is fast today and it need fast responses; customers, coworkers, problems, how is possible to have patience with all of that happening at the same time? Patience it's a luxury that isn't present and will never be in working enviroment.

  • @wonderingpilgrim

    I appreciate what you're saying, and definitely agree with the need to learn patience.
    But then you said that we can't discern between the evil one's voice or God's, yet Jesus clearly said that His sheep know His Voice.
    If true Christians who are filled with the Holy Spirit can know Jesus's voice, (as well as understand His will through His Word,) then what do you mean by us not knowing the difference between the voice of the Enemy and the voice of Christ?

    Father, does patience mean we don’t do anything (our will, our ideas) while we wait patiently for it to be obvious or that God makes something happen? Or does it mean keep doing the same things until God moves us along?

    • @mullmonastery
      @mullmonastery  4 года назад +2

      Dear Cris, patience is not a passive state of being, just like obedience in a monastic setting is not a passive attitude. It takes all our will to remain patient or obedient, and you need a very well-oriented heart and a very well-educated mind in order to not respond and to not abandon. These things seem passive from the. outside, but once you begin to practice them, you soon learn that - internally - they are active approaches to life, and that they require all you will and your intellectual / emotional strength in order to hold on to them. Christ is risen, dear one!
