Wonderful introduction to effects pedals for the ʻukulele. I had a recent gig with a hula dancer and felt I could have enhanced my music a bit. My main instrument is a six string tenor since I am a strummer. The short examples of combinations at the end got me really excited about the possibilities. Especially the tremelo with the chorus. Thank you for helping me enhance my music. Mahalo!
I'm between this set of things: amp, pedal.. (more expensive in total) or the tenor Flight Diana Soundwave that I fall in love with. Thanks for the reviews!!!
Very helpful I've been clueless on effects and effect pedals, playing mainly acoustic. But recently with my alternate reality tenor tele I want to experiment more. 👍
A very great number of years ago, I helped someone design and effect that now that I think about it would be a really good one for a Ukulele. It may be on the market, I really don't know but here is what it basically did. The first stage picked off the signal amplitude for one path and did an "overdrive" going to a different path. The second stage modified the "overdrive" signal in sort of an extreme chorus like effect this could include shifting the notes down as much as two octaves. The 3rd stage took the amplitude signal from the first and used that to control the gain applied. The result was a thing that sounded like a second instrument was playing along.
Facebook chatting with Jake S. late one night (as he changed strings), I got a looper recommendation for a Boss RC-1 and bought that. I also have a pre-amp that I’ve only used twice (the K&K passives I have on two of my ukes do fine without preamp, and my Mi-Si is its own pre-amp), and, so far, for reverb and chorus, I use the options built into my Fishman LoudBox Mini. But eventually I may want more effects, and I appreciate the review. Thank you, Barry!
This is good particularly for people playing live. Maybe it’s worth pointing out that you can get a lot of effects on recording software like GarageBand , and digital recorders.
Nothing wrong with them - just that they rely on an instrument having natural sustain - which most nylon strings don't. Work great on steel string electrics though.
I'm so happy to see you do this. I've been looking at the Zoom, but I put my toe in the water with a little PockRock first. It's a blast! I guess I have a little guitar envy LOL. You gotta rock once in a while. One thing you didn't mention was the drum machine. Seems pretty useful even with an accoustic sound.
To be honest, the video was not about the Zoom - could have been any multi effects - I just used it to demo the various groupings as it was easier than me setting up five pedals in my small office!
Thank you for that last bit about just enjoying making music. It's cool to hear these effects for a novelty but I'm perfectly happy sitting alone in my den after a long day at work and listening to myself strum my acoustic.
You mentioned fluorocarbon strings. On another uke, perhaps a hollow body acoustic-electric all other things being equal, will type of string- eg fluorocarbon vs Aquila, make a difference in how the effect pedals sound with the ukulele?
It will make a difference but only insofar as the same difference to the core acoustic tone. With a nylon strung uke using a piezo pickup, all that pickup is doing is amplifying the core acoustic tone. I've never found different strings suit effects better - in fact effects tend to blur the lines between different strings anyway.
Appreciate the information! I've always found playing with effects to be fun. They can even make simple repetitive exercises more interesting. Wondering if you have any thoughts on preamps for passive pickups?
LR Baggs Venue DI is my pre-amp choice - divine pedal that is superb for notching out nasty tones. More basic (Sadly no longer made, but you can find them used) is a Fishman Pro EQ II
Thanks Baz, I’m looking at looper pedals, but noticed you use a zoom multi effects, is the looper function on it good, can you do a review on it for Ukulele?
Hi 😊 I’ve watched your review about the Flight Fireball … I’d been looking for my first ukulele and your review clinched it for me .. I’m now the proud owner of my little fireball tenor 🥳🥳🥳🥳 from World of Ukes ..lovely guy who runs it 🤩 What I’d like to ask you please is would the Zoom A1X four acoustic multi effects pedal be alright to use ..? ..I’ve noticed on your video you have used the G1 for electric guitars 🦋
Good choice, and Matt is a lovely person. To be honest, any effects pedal will be fund. I have the guitar version as I use it with more instruments, but the Acoustic version WILL suit an electro acoustic instrument better (basically it will remove the sort of effects that don't suit acoustics so much an major more on those that do)
Good stuff, Baz. I feel lucky that I moved from being a bad guitar player to being a slightly better ukulele player. A set of pedals is great. A looper is a great way to get better.
@@GotAUkulele I keep meaning to sak - so I just will ... what's the tune you tend to play to show what a uke sounds like? It sounds a but old-fashionad and ragtimey. I like it.
There are some great app / software effects out there and when it comes to digital effects will be indistinguishable. I'm a big fan of analogue pedals though which no digital pedal or app can come close to!
FAR too many to choose from - and all sorts of prices. I personally use Blackstar amps for rock tones, and Roland Acoustic amps if I just want pure uke sound

The Soundwave is a nice diversion, but no match for pedals and an amp
Pedals are fun. I use them more with guitars but a little bit of reverb and delay is a lot of fun with a ukulele. Great over view.
Cool, thanks!
