Heard this on Sirius at around 630 am this morning.. As soon as it was over, I went to you tube and played it in my car 4x. Texted my 17 yo daughter about it..She is like...That is one of my favorites..Felt like a hip Dad for 2 minutes.. priceless..
If I were banished to a desert island and told I could have the entire discography of one band to listen to forever, it would be Modest Mouse. Their whole discography runs the gamut of human emotions. I've laughed, I've cried, I've felt strong and weak. I love it. Greatest band I know. Come back to Red Rocks! Denver misses you!
Phil Tizzano Cry your pardon'. his name appears as his actual name. so im not seeing his youtube account name. if i did see it i wouldn't question him. i've read through the entire dark tower cycle twice, long days and pleasant nights..
I love the Chorus of this song, it sounds like the entire band is going one way, but then Issac's voice goes a completely different way, like it's pulling in the opposite direction. I don't know if it was intentional or not but it makes for a very exciting dynamic.
The tempo of the music like the tempo of nature pulls the soul in different directions. Still the opposite vocals and musical score can make something beautiful, too.
Yes, that's a great description. I'm not great at understanding lyrics, so I thought Isaac's lyrics had something to do with what the band was singing "We greased all the ropes/ Come bubbling outwards We'll throw you a line/And then "sit" back. Like they are speaking for Time and mocking how weak humans are compared to Time. That would have been a cool concept but the song is great as it is.
Thanks! I haven't really uploaded anything on there in a while. Maybe I'll finish Tube-Fruit before this comes out that way I can do all of Strangers to Ourselves in a timely fashion.
Guercinator yeah man. Anytime I listen to MM I always go to one of your full album playlists. You are the reason I was able to explore this band so much!
My Grandmother died the year this song came out, and I loved her dearly. She was a parent to me. One of our favorite things to do together was to rake up leaves together in her large yard come autumn. The line about the "trees turning colors now" always reminds me of those days in the fall where we worked together, gathering up leaves colored red and gold. I still miss those days, and this song if only for a few moments take me back in time to before she passed. This song is painful to listen to, but I love it all the same.
It's peculiar how the tone of this song changes based on your own emotional-state. It can be sad for you if you are sad, or it can share in your happiness when you are happy.
Mouse fans tend to be rather few and far between, but they are the most awesome people alive. I recently lost my best friend, and the only person who appreciated them on my level to a dope overdose. RIP Bill..
I'll never get tired of Modest Mouse's music. It never ceases to blow me away. Even listening to the same song over and over, I always get something new. One of the greats, and one of my biggest inspirations.
This middle part with the backup vocals is really cool too. Very unusual sounding for Modest Mouse, yet there's still plenty of MM to this song. This is going to be really damn sweet album.
Yea they are doing a vocal layering thing that's not typical of them, but I love it! One of my favorite bands, Pinback, does that a lot in their music and I adore it. So it's cool to hear MMM do something similar.
@missingdoors, they have done vocal layering, but this has a really airy vibe. Pinback has a really distinct type of vocal harmonizing and this sounds like their type to me. Andddd I like it!
The impression I get is that the songs on Strangers (including the ones that haven't been officially released but were played live before) kind of bridge the gap between Moon&Antarctica and Good News. There's an obvious pop sensibility to everything, but the variety is much larger and more impressive, and certainly more daring, than what was on the last two albums. There's also an overarching melancholy to all the tracks- not uncommon from MM, but it's hard to say Good News wasn't their "happiest" album, and this feels like a much more angry, bitter Good News. I'm not knocking that. I want that.
StyxTBuferd I would say the "poppiest" album was Good News, but We Were Dead was pretty daring also I feel like. In fact, I think every Modest Mouse album is Daring in it's own way, but I do see what you are saying as far as it's more along the lines of some of their older stuff. As far as it just being angrier, I wouldn't say that. I usually just tell people that music by Modest Mouse is emotional in general. Another thing I always tell people when telling them about Modest Mouse is that Modest Mouse has a song for any kind of emotion, and everywhere in between. That's the greatest thing about them. Same with their albums and how they all have very distinctive feels. The idea I got from this album is futility of peoples lives, pertaining mostly to suburbia, which is alluded by the cover of the overly structured neighborhood. I wouldn't call this "bitter Good News", but hey, I can see how you got that impression.
Ah, this song is incredible. The Moon & Antartica is my favorite album of all time, (I think I've probably listened to it close to 500 times) but all indications to this point make this album seem potentially as good. Awesome to see they're releasing it on Glacial Pace as well.
[Verse 1: Isaac Brock] Open up the window All the air, oh, the air it's falling out Eyes vacuum up light Sound gets trapped by the mouth We'll deal with the remainder When the dents, the dents get hammered out Then we'll travel through time [Verse 2: Isaac Brock] The world's an inventor With its work crawlin', runnin', squirmin' 'round Trees drop colorful fruits Directly into our mouths The world's an inventor We're the dirtiest thing it's thought about And we really don't mind [Verse 3: Isaac Brock] We'll probably never get there Bring your sight seers school teachers down It's a watercolor weekend All the trees are turning colors now We'll probably never get there Bring your candy taster, time wasters around And we'll fuck with their minds [Verse 4: Isaac Brock] The world composes With his shirttails wrinkled, hanging out Bang us together See what sort of sounds we make right now The world plays music Playing skin on teeth inside of the mouth What sort of sounds? All the air, all the air is falling out Eyes vacuum up light Sound gets trapped by the mouth Our predecessor left this box And something's clawing around I think it really wants out
It's disheartening when people want the same album over and over again. "This doesn't sound like their third or fourth album and that's my favorite one" --stop you're doing it wrong. Each new album should be a step forward for the band, they worked hard and have completed something that IS Modest Mouse. If you don't like it, fine, but don't expect bands to put out the same shit year after year. Let bands create! Give it a chance - then give it a second chance!
I hear ya and mostly agree but there is no right or wrong way. Some people like the same ol same ol, same ol' over and over, and some like reinvention. Just the way it is.
"Our predecessor left this box, and something's clawing around. I think it really wants out." This is such a deeply human line. I feel like it's about the things our ancestors did "for us", that horrify us and threaten to destroy us... But we simply can not ignore forever. Or maybe I'm just thinking too hard, and it's just about the faults we inherit from our parents.
I realized recently that Issac lives less than 10 minutes from me and have passed his place in Portland many times and didn't know. He has put the house up for sale but would routinely leave his front door open. People would wander in an just say hello or strike up a conversation with him. A reporter realized this when she went to interview him. She said he barely looked up from whatever he was reading and after a few minutes exclaimed "oh, I have an interview today".. he did say he's chased 3 people out with an axe and did become tired of the neighborhood. Still, it's pretty cool how chill he was in the neighborhood.
Okay, this is freaking dope. I'm a long time MM fan, and I've wanted like crazy for this new album to be good, so I've been looking for reasons to like "Lampshades On Fire" and "Coyotes," etc. But I don't have to look on this track! This is just straight up excellent, well-written, jam-able musical sexiness. SO WORTH the 8 year wait!
I like it, seems a tad overproduced though like some of the stuff off of "We Were Dead...", but they never fail to impress me. I can't wait for March 17!!!
They'll never sound as under produced as they did before Good News. But even though this track is dense, I love the layers. There's so much going on, I hear something new with every listen. Perhaps it's overproduced, but what really matters is that it's *well* produced.
I hate people that feel the need to have a "super secret club". Modest Mouse has gotten so much better from their first CD's and you will never hear raw angst like you did before, which is 100% fine. The band is growing, not stagnating.
I heard that they already had written enough songs to do two albums when Strangers to Ourselves was released. It's 2020 please put it out :( This year sucks god help us all.
This whole album is nostalgic, and reminds me of the times I would sit on my dad's lap and watch Modest Mouse music videos, or go on road trips with him. That's strange. This came out in 2015. I haven't done that since 2012. I even have a false memory of listening to this song and Sugar Boats with him...
SICK song...resonates of old school, but still has the modern modest sound too. Sounds like they took riffs from the days of Long Drive and added a modern funk, I love it.... I pre ordered the vinyl; I can't wait to get it! Rock On!
I can't fucking believe I missed the chance to see these guys in Santa Barbara when they played there. I'm kicking myself to this day for missing that show.
for some reason I was really upset when I first heard this album, I just expected something more. But modest mouse is modest mouse, I started listening to them when I was 13 and now I'm 21. This is the first album that has come out since I was a kid, and I guess I expected an evolution of the band or something, but I've listened to the same albums over and over again through my formative years and I realize that the albums weren't all that different-I love some songs, I go back and find new songs I hated before, the songs I liked before I don't like as much now, but it's still all modest mouse, and modest mouse is an entity that exists in itself, and this album is another great addition to their collective work. now kids in 2015 learning to love this band have six instead of five albums to listen to over and over again, and I'm still happy I had five
I think this one and The Best Room will be great in concert because they'll jam out the last 4 minutes or so of the song. They can pretty much do this with most of their stuff--the best example "The World at Large."
Why do all of their new songs seem to have that staccato, uptempo beat like dashboard? This isn't bad and I really liked the intro but I really wish they would try making some slower or more heavy stuff like they used to.
Mostly because they're singles...and singles are upbeat and catchy, more often than not. Shit In Your Cut will satisfy your need for something slowed down and heavier.
This album is great just like all the others are. I think it stays with the original sound of mm and explores all the human emotions equally well as do all their previous albums. Mm is great and props on their original sound
You'll never convince me that Modest Mouse hasn't always been a funk band at heart.
demoralized funk
I like to think they influenced a lot of Midwest emo with their older stuff
I like to think that every Modest Mouse fan fishes or at least fantasizes about fishing.
Most random comment, and criminally underrated
You got me, I'm constantly daydreaming about fishing in the great lakes
I don't like fishing but I do like looking at fish, and just nature in general, but I don't like the ocean it's too much ocean.
i just got back from an awesome fishing trip
Yep
This song has gotten better with age. Superbly constructed. Outstanding!

I love the Chorus of this song, it sounds like the entire band is going one way, but then Issac's voice goes a completely different way, like it's pulling in the opposite direction. I don't know if it was intentional or not but it makes for a very exciting dynamic.
I agree, it's dope the way it flows together, it reminds me of a Red Hot Chili Peppers song -21st Century, it has that same effect.
The tempo of the music like the tempo of nature pulls the soul in different directions. Still the opposite vocals and musical score can make something beautiful, too.
Yes, that's a great description. Some of my favorite MM lyrics too.
IT'S SO GROOVY! LISTEN TO THAT BASS

Hope you're well and that life is treating you kinder these days.

Modest Mouse once again telling us about our never ending f*ck ups. Thank you for keeping us modest.

major oingo boingo vibes
Strangers to Ourselves seems like it has a really cool groove. Excited to hear the album in full next month and to see them on the Tonight Show too!
Fruity nd fresh, I want the album..
I can't wait to have this fucking album.

That intro with that guitar riff is just godly 🔥🔥🔥
I'll never get tired of Modest Mouse's music. It never ceases to blow me away. Even listening to the same song over and over, I always get something new. One of the greats, and one of my biggest inspirations.
Some of Isaac's best vocals and lyrics and that's saying a hell of a lot.
Just started listening, but damn, I'm digging this energy-charged intro.
This middle part with the backup vocals is really cool too. Very unusual sounding for Modest Mouse, yet there's still plenty of MM to this song. This is going to be really damn sweet album.
Feels long. I like it. Can't wait to hear it again in the context of the songs surrounding and the album as a whole.
Yea they are doing a vocal layering thing that's not typical of them, but I love it! One of my favorite bands, Pinback, does that a lot in their music and I adore it. So it's cool to hear MMM do something similar.
BHarshy12 they've totally arranged vocal tracks in layers for multiple albums, and so did ugly casanova.
@missingdoors, they have done vocal layering, but this has a really airy vibe. Pinback has a really distinct type of vocal harmonizing and this sounds like their type to me. Andddd I like it!
Ah. Oh. So. Excited. One of the best bands of this generation. Awesome.
Saw this song live tonight in Seattle, and couldnt be happier. Always a favorite, a fantastic energetic song!
Heard this song on XM this morning on the way to work. Still awesome!
This song is freaking amazing - one of the best Modest Mouse songs I've heard.
ITS SO BEAUTIFULLY RHYTHMIC AND CATCHY
Where modest mouse would have been in the 90's had they not chosen the "nirvana is dead" route.
Pure nostalgia. Thank you MM.
Im glad they did for sure
Six minutes and eleven seconds of pure bliss
Whenever I play this song, I play it at least twice. At least.
Damn this song gives me huge No one's first and you're next vibes!

[Verse 1: Isaac Brock]
Open up the window
All the air, oh, the air it's falling out
Eyes vacuum up light
Sound gets trapped by the mouth
We'll deal with the remainder
When the dents, the dents get hammered out
Then we'll travel through time
[Verse 2: Isaac Brock]
The world's an inventor
With its work crawlin', runnin', squirmin' 'round
Trees drop colorful fruits
Directly into our mouths
The world's an inventor
We're the dirtiest thing it's thought about
And we really don't mind
[Verse 3: Isaac Brock]
We'll probably never get there
Bring your sight seers school teachers down
It's a watercolor weekend
All the trees are turning colors now
We'll probably never get there
Bring your candy taster, time wasters around
And we'll fuck with their minds
[Verse 4: Isaac Brock]
The world composes
With his shirttails wrinkled, hanging out
Bang us together
See what sort of sounds we make right now
The world plays music
Playing skin on teeth inside of the mouth
What sort of sounds?
What lovely sounds come about?
[Chorus: Tom Peloso & Lisa Molinaro & Jim Fairchild, *Isaac Brock* ]
We greased all the ropes
*The part of the ground*
We'll throw you a line
*That's above the ground*
We're gonna break these boulders
*We're the part of the ground*
We're gonna pull things out
*That when things come together*
We greased all the ropes
*Come bubbling outwards*
We'll throw you a line
*And then sink back*
We're gonna break these boulders
*Come bubbling outwards*
We're gonna travel time
*When things come together*
[Verse 5: Isaac Brock]
We're gonna throw a party
All the ghosts of trees are coming out
Don't look any direction
Wait until the light's inside of the cloud
You're gonna wanna see this
Don't bring your camera around
Watch sun and sawdust align
[Chorus: Tom Peloso & Lisa Molinaro & Jim Fairchild, *Isaac Brock* ]
We greased all the ropes
*Come bubbling outwards*
We'll throw you a line
*Then sinking back*
We're gonna break these boulders
*The part of the ground*
We're gonna pull things out
*When things come together*
We greased all the ropes
*Come bubbling outwards*
We'll throw you a line
*Gets above the ground*
We're gonna break these boulders
*Come bubbling outwards*
We're gonna travel time
*And then sink back*
[Verse 6: Isaac Brock]
Close up the window!
All the air, all the air is falling out
Eyes vacuum up light
Sound gets trapped by the mouth

They did a ton of meth in their early days so that fits perfect lol

This whole album is nostalgic, and reminds me of the times I would sit on my dad's lap and watch Modest Mouse music videos, or go on road trips with him. That's strange. This came out in 2015. I haven't done that since 2012. I even have a false memory of listening to this song and Sugar Boats with him...
HOW HAVE MANY MORE NOT SEEN THIS???
Let it be known across the land: "THIS IS MY JAM"
SICK song...resonates of old school, but still has the modern modest sound too.
Sounds like they took riffs from the days of Long Drive and added a modern funk, I love it....
I pre ordered the vinyl; I can't wait to get it!
Rock On!
i cant stop listening to this song. really really like it!
This is _killer_ walking down the street music.
YESSS
I can't fucking believe I missed the chance to see these guys in Santa Barbara when they played there. I'm kicking myself to this day for missing that show.
Favorite song for summer 2015 so far :D
Love the subtle Banjo.
for some reason I was really upset when I first heard this album, I just expected something more.
That's exactly the right attitude. Keep on growing.
modest mouse killed it in buffalo on the 17th.. Ill never miss another one of their shows in the area ever again.. thank god for MM
I think this one and The Best Room will be great in concert because they'll jam out the last 4 minutes or so of the song. They can pretty much do this with most of their stuff--the best example "The World at Large."
With "Coyotes" my favourite new song so far. Kudos to Modest Mouse.
Why do all of their new songs seem to have that staccato, uptempo beat like dashboard? This isn't bad and I really liked the intro but I really wish they would try making some slower or more heavy stuff like they used to.
nail on da head
Mostly because they're singles...and singles are upbeat and catchy, more often than not. Shit In Your Cut will satisfy your need for something slowed down and heavier.
Have you listened to Coyotes?
Have you listened to Coyotes?
Coyotes is nothing compared to Trailer Trash, baby blue sedan, little motels etc
Love the sound.
OH SHIT ONE YEAR HAS PASSED SINCE THIS SONG WAS POSTED
Still loving it!
Saw you guys for my birthday, what a wonderful birthday gift. I want to see you every year till I die.
its funny but a year later and I am totally loving this album. Didnt think I could.
two years later and it's still amazing
4 and a half years later, still pretty cool.
@@perspii2808 It is.....
I like it more now than when it was released. I had to get over myself.
This song is so good.
I think this easily solidifies itself as the best single so far
This album is great just like all the others are. I think it stays with the original sound of mm and explores all the human emotions equally well as do all their previous albums. Mm is great and props on their original sound
4:20 that is what im talking about
yessssssss
Can't get enough of this love too much need more fiending for more
I've always like modest mouse but this song got me in trace and cant seem to stop playing it, its like it my current life theme or something.
Some don't like the direction MM has taken, but they keep evolving and I really like this song and the direction they're taking.
New Modest Mouse.. so good there are 366 likes and only 301 views
Highly Anticipating this album
I hope you achieve your goals, friend.
@@The_Ultimate_Ground_Of_Being thank You bro
It sounds like if the View was sped up and was from the Lonesome Crowded West. Definitely the best one so far
