    Today's video is a fun one, I'm talking about how you can use Joel Famularo's Phantom LUTS to unlock the full potential of your Sony A7Siii, FX3, FX6 and BMPCC 4K and 6K. I'm focusing primarily on how these LUTS work with my Sony FX6 but they also work with the A7Siii and FX3 similarly.
    I am absolutely BLOWN away with how good these LUTS look and how efficient they are for my workflow. If you're looking for a way to get extremely close to ARRI colours this is it.

    Hi everyone! I received a lot of comments and feedback from A7Siii & FX3 owners about the differences in their cameras compared to the FX6. I made an entire video on how to get the same results using those cameras and it’s up on my channel now. Cheers 👍🏻

    A quick tip: when shooting in CineEI and in Low base ISO mode, set your L, M and H preset value as 200, 400 and 800 respectively. During shooting always use the "H" (800) as that exposure matched your base ISO. Only switch to L and M when you want to overexpose by 1 and 2 stops. There is no need to use the dial to change the exposure index in small increments. Just use the L, M and H presets.

    • @SpencerStanley
      @SpencerStanley  2 года назад +1

      Great tip. I have mine setup that way but almost never find the need to overexpose anymore. The only situation I might is at 12,800 as there’s a bit more noise.

    Solid content dude. Keep it up!
    A couple small notes/differences for A7SIII owners:
    1) We CANNOT actually pre-load LUTs onto the camera (unless they’ve changed something in firmware that I am unaware of)
    2) A7SIII base ISO (I believe, someone correct me if I’m wrong) is 640 not 800. We still get the 12,800 upper ISO though.
    I too have the Phantom LUTs from Joel F and they’re very well executed. Cheers!

      @SpencerStanley  3 года назад +3

      Yup! I was originally just making the video for FX6 users but realized it would have better reach with A7Siii and fX3 users as well.
      If you use an external monitor you could load the LUTS into there 😃 if not Gamma display assist is your best friend.

    Joel's Phantom LUTs are legitimately a game-changer. The A7SII-version basically made me look at my own stills camera (A7II) in a completely new light - I'd always thought it was terrible for video and couldn't do SLOG2, but the Phantom LUTs made the image look so much better than I'd ever thought. Glad to see they're doing the same for the FX6 :)

    I love phantom luts. I purchased the Arri and Film combo, it was worth it for myself. The creator of the luts said you don’t need to over expose your footage for his luts, but I was never able to get good results with that. I wish the s3 could have our own luts for a color profile.

      Couldn’t agree more. On my A7Siii I just use gamma display assist and expose normally to my eye. The A7Siii has a pretty crappy screen though… sometimes it makes it harder to nail exposure. It’s a lot easier with a monitor. I’ve been not overexposing at all lately and really like the results.

    Just a quick note: When this video was recorded both the A7SIII and FX3 didn't have the "import LUT" feature.
    But with the V2 firmware for the FX3 (released this month) there's now CineEI and you can load LUTs, like the FX6 and other cameras in the cine line (which is awesome).

    I keep hearing that when you have your monitor lut (MLUT) installed and are judging exposure, whenever you change exposure, it only changes the monitor lut and not what the camera is actually recording. Coming from a Bmpcc 6K g2, how can I get it so the monitor out shows exactly what the FX6 is going to record? Thanks.

      This is an older video so I do not completely remember but I'm almost positive I review this in the video. It should show your exact exposure, just make sure when in CIne EI mode to use the Same EI as your base ISO (ex. 800).

    • @SpencerStanley
      @SpencerStanley  3 года назад +1

      You almost never want to put your ISO on auto. unless maybe you're vlogging or don't care much about the image quality. You always want to shoot at whatever your base ISO is to preserve the most dynamic range. I would keep my ISO and shutter speed locked in and adjust my exposure with ND or aperture, but I try and keep my aperture locked in as well depending on my scene. Hope that helped!

    what is 800 ei?

    • @SpencerStanley
      @SpencerStanley  2 года назад +1

      When shooting in Cine EI mode Sony uses expose indexes. The simple way to think of it is that your monitor is showing the exposure at 800 ISO. You can change you EI to display a different exposure while keeping the same base ISO for best dynamic range. So you can lower you EI to over expose a bit if you want. I also keep my EI at the base.

    What does 800 EI mean?

    • @SpencerStanley
      @SpencerStanley  2 года назад +1

      EI means exposure index. The simplest way of explaining is that the camera is always at the base ISO of 800 or 12,800 when filming in Cine EI. You only change your EI to exposure your monitor differently to your increase or reduce exposure but the actual footage doesn’t change.

    When you say expose properly, are saying NOT to overexpose? Literally everyone else says this sensor needs overexposure. My own tests are all over the place. It’s the one thing with Sony that’s so frustrating. Shot to shot looks so different when I get the footage back in my computer.

    • @SpencerStanley

      Totally agree! It can be frustrating with these sensors sometimes. I would say don’t overexpose unless you don’t have a lot of light. From my tests overexposing is fine but you don’t need to. I would like to give you some constructive criticism, real fast. I'm at 5:01 into this video. At 3 minutes you asked for a subscribe... that's three minutes I sat and watched you really talk about nothing and then ask for a sub. In the future maybe cut STRAIGHT to the meat and potatoes. I hate having my time wasted in a video and most ppl do. It has taken you 5:01 to FINALLY say that you are getting started. Why not get started straight out of the gate? I'm honestly surprised I've hung in this long. I usually don't do this and I normally just click away, which I am, but I do also see your sub count and for that reason I want to leave you with something that you could potentially see as just feedback, adjust your script, and maybe improve.
    At 5:01 I still haven't seen one thing about settings, how to get the look, or how to implement it after 5 minutes of listening to you talk. That cant happen. Cut straight to the point of the video, maybe stop half way through instruction, ask for that sub after youve given me a taste of what your future instructional videos are like with the first half of the video, and carry on with the rest of the video. Again, IM at 5 minutes and 1 second. I cant wait any longer. I need that meat and potatoes being fed to me within the first 10-15 seconds of the video. I hope this helps improve your views, durations, and sub count in the future but for me personally, this is the reason that I am clicking away for now. I hope to see you again soon with some improved material in the future. Keep at it!!!
