This Might Be My Favorite RV Tow Vehicle Accessory So Far! - The Beech Lane Tailgate Ladder I held off on getting a tailgate ladder for a while. Maybe I didn't want to face getting older (lol), but after we got our new RV tow vehicle, I knew getting into and out of a much taller truck bed would be torture on my knees. Why risk an injury while we were on an RV trip? I finally gave in and decided to install a truck bed tailgate ladder. Watch the video to see the installation process and how easy they are to use. Being travel trailer owners, our truck bed is an crucial area for storage during transportation & while RV'ing, so let's see if this really makes life on the road easier.

I’ve had mine going on 5 years now. The only difference is the one I have has quick pins on the ladder section so it’s easier to adjust the height of the ladder. I found this helpful when parked on uneven surfaces.
Never had any issues with the strap as mine came with two large metal washers to attach the strap to the tailgate.
thats a good idea and something i thought about doing too, thanks for sharing my friend.
Thank you Ross for an honest review of this ladder.
My pleasure
I’m getting this for my other half. Hopefully it doesn’t hurt his pride 😂
Me too
Just tell him to suck it up. We all get there sooner or later. This will keep it from coming sooner.
exactly!
nice!
Excellent installation instructions
Glad it was helpful!
I put a ladder on my truck. I’ve used it several times with no problems. Money well spent!
thanks for sharing, so far i love it.
Have used this for over 2 years on the same truck. Zero problems other than a bit of rust. Repainted all good.
Still need to becareful getting out as foot can get caught in the tail gate cable.
Thanks for the input my friend. I would not be surprised if I had to touch up with a little Por-15 down the road, but like you happy with it. Also like you, have gotten my foot caught in the cable 🤣
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS😂 not fun at HD parking lot up here in a snowstorm 😮
🤣🤣🤣
This would be great for my old knees ❤
my knees get worse every day.
Awesome review. Very clean. And 1 Ton is alot of truck but I got one myself and I will never go back! 🔥
im prepared to baby this thing so hopefully it outlives me. only 18K miles despite being 7 years old, it look brand new
Oh my! Love this !! Thank you Ross
Love the New to you Ram 1 Ton. Looking to do the same sometime soon.
Happy camping
Thanks Pete, we started looking and 2500's and when I found this truck for considerably less than a new 3/4 ton I couldnt pass it up. Hopefully it outlives me since we are part time.
Hi Ross
I’m new to correspondence thru RUclips, anyway to take a conversation private? I have a few q’s that I’d like between just us if possible.
Thank you
Heavier capacity and some adjustability on the length is needed when your tailgate height varies due to varying terrain when parking.
you can actually tilt the ladder a little so both feet are on the ground because the rocker arms are independent of each other. The rocker arms wont be even, but I dont think that is going to make a difference.
My buddy stepped off the back of his truck, messed his ankle and had to get 3 surgerys.
ouch... and even though im in decent shape, i want to avoid injuries while on the road. we love this ladder.
Good to know!
thanks for watching my friend.
Nice truck!
thank you. The find of a lifetime for us.
Looks good👍🇺🇲
so far so good... interested to see how the buckle holds up in a year.
I can’t build this. All 17 of my 10mm sockets have disappeared and my wife won’t let me buy one 😞
8, 10, 12 and 13... they should sell socket kits with just those! 🤣
I like the ladder design. What about ladder height adjustment. Say you have something heavy that squats the truck a few inches or if someone jumps on the tail gate while the ladder is down. Is there enough play?
I've had one for about 5 years. There is plenty of room to move the ladder as needed. I've never had a problem.
i will second this... even if you are on uneven ground, because the rocker arms are independent of each other, you can twist the ladder a bit to get both feet on the ground.
concern with how ladder lands/sits on ground when parked on large incline where the tailgate is farther off ground than when truck is sitting level
you can actually tilt the ladder a little so both feet are on the ground because the rocker arms are independent of each other. The rocker arms wont be even, but I dont think that is going to make a difference.
Great video, thanks!! I was climbing into my truck box this morning and making lots of unusual grunting sounds in the process...and was quite worried about the subsequent "dismount", hahaha. The ladder is something I will be looking into for sure. Thanks!
"unusual grunting sounds in the process" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm with you my friend!
Gratz on the truck! It's sharp. The recommendations are all excellent. And thanks again for an efficient video (no unboxing!).
thanks for the repeat visit Jason, glad to help.
What if your on a incline or downhill? How does the ladder rest on the ground of uneven pavements?
because the rocker arms are independent of each other, the ladder will "twist" a little to get both feet on the ground. my driveway is pretty sloped and it works fine there too.
I’ve had mine almost three years, love it. My strap is in great shape, I do have it covered with a tonneau so I am sure that helps by keeping the sun off it.
thanks for the info Kirby!
I have been looking at these for a few months, I appreciate your video. I am concerned with the thin aluminum on my Ford, I am not a fan of the aluminum. I am also concerned with the strap, we as RV’ers are always dragging stuff in and out of the bed of truck. I think the strap would get damaged over time. Anyone else have thoughts or experiences?? Thanks!!
Thats a good observation and concern John, and something I am thinking about modifying... or trying to figure out how to modify. Stay tuned.
The Traxion version of this that I instaled on my truck uses a cam buckle instead- no way to get crushed as the metal buckle is only on one side and it hangs off the tailgate- check out my install on my diy channel: ruclips.net/video/a26Fyh7UTNA/видео.htmlsi=cPbSsrV_IykFvVgS
John, I probably should have mentioned it in the video, but the way I mounted these straps, the back strap sits below the tailgate when opened, and the front strap will rest down between the tailgate and the bed where it wouldnt be contacted by anything going into the bed. This still doesnt solve the problem of things sliding against the strap or the bolts holding the strap in. I also put the strap as far on the driver side as possible to leave a large area to slide things into the bed. I think Im going to have to try to come up with a mod to be able to remove the strap entirely.
Love my Ford truck cuz of the rear step built into the tailgate
thanks for watching!
Have one I installed about 2 years ago but I didn't find it stable enough cause Im 6,5 and 300 lbs. so I now carry a 3 step fold out ladder. The strap on mine hung in there till I slide some plywood in the bed and caught the strap and ripped it out.
I would like to see some models come out with heavy load capacities for the larger folks too.
That truck is 7 years old? Where did you find it? Wow that is CLEEEEAAAAN!
find of a lifetime, local dealership. 18K miles. considerably less than a new 2500.
I installed one of these about 8 years ago and it has enabled my old knees to climb in and out. The only problem I have had is that I somehow broke the plastic buckle. Simple fix - I took an old dog collar, cut it in half, trimmed it to lemgth and it's been working fine for 3 years.
its a good idea, i think the plastic buckle may be an area that needs to be improved, but its something I will have to play around with. Thanks for sharing Richard.
I have one on a 1999 F250. Been on for 15 years. Put large metal washers on the straps. The plastic strap buckles will deteriorate from sun. Replaced my straps and buckles with one removed from a life jacket. Love this ladder!
That's a lot of usage! Thanks for sharing Randy!
BTW, since I'm commenting on your videos.... This was another great review. I'd been looking at these, but never saw a good review and worried about quality. I bought a new F250 and this thing is way too high off the ground, even with the corner step, for my 65yo knees. I bought these steps, and mounted them on the passenger side, based on your recommendations. Otherwise, I might have mounted them on the driver side??
Thanks for another great review!
glad to help my friend!
Personally, a ladder like this is more problem than a solution if you tow trailers on a gooseball. All of mine, including 5th wheel camper with Goosebox, are. The ladder will be a real problem when connecting the safety chains and for any other reason you may need to shimmy into the bed when hitched because the ladder is too long to flip open when hitched. IMO/IME, going with an extending step that tucks at the corner of the bumper is more universally useful. Depending on year, Mopar has an OE design and there's a well-known aftermarket maker, AMP Research. I have the latter in this position as well as at the front of the bed, either side, to facilitate access of my toolbox. Even better, the items I mention require no drilling and bolt into factory holes and onto existing fasteners.
Thanks for watching and sharing. This video, like all our videos, is to provide options. It may or may not be the best solution for everyone.
I installed one on my 2018 RAM 2500. The only downside was the nylon strap used to hold the ladder to the tailgate. The truck bouncing on the road would tear the nylon hold-down strap, and then the ladder would flop around in the back of the truck. This was very unpleasant because the spray liner was torn up by this ladder not being secured. I finally made my metal bracket to securely hold the ladder in place or remove it and lay it down in the truck bed. Sorry, no photo of the bracket that I made. Sold the truck in 2022. I had to downsize due to medical issues.
im thinking of a way for a different way to mount it, not only something that will hold up to the UV light, but also something that can be removed from the gate if you want... something I might do for the 1 year review. thanks for watching and commenting William!
Great video! I'm considering this, but my main concern is if it would be in the way of sliding stuff out of the box, like someone mentioned. Our truck serves as my wife's grocery getter, so it's a big consideration.
yep, there are definite disadvantages but you can always remove the ladder when not in use too.
My tailgate ladder was a game changer for me getting in and out of the bed of my '17 RAM Laramie 4X4. My ladder is a different brand that allows you to swing the ladder to the side or rear of the truck and has quick pins for ladder height adjustment.
i saw those too Britt, they are nice! thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
I put an AMP research folding bed step on my F350
Pricey but smooth one foot operation.
they are nice too!
Ram makes a pull down step that is installed just under the bumper and tucks up nice when not in use. I don't know if I'd have installed a ladder to get into the bed of my truck at your age. Seems a little degrading to a mid age guy. Not to mention, you tend to be more cost conscious with other purchases... you do you, but I don't get it. Now there's a ladder in the way if you want to slide a cooler or something across the tailgate into/out of the bed.
Our videos are to help give people options so please dont feel you are offending me if you dont agree with decisions I make for myself and my family. Even if this video turns people away from a tailgate ladder, then I'm still accomplishing what I set out to do with this channel... provide information. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Are you still liking this ladder? Im fixing to push the buy with 1 click button!
YEP, unloading about 200 bricks from my truck this month for a parking pad, it has saved my back. amzn.to/4akdM7O
I would like to buy one of these, I also have a Ram 3500. I would like to know, the bolts you installed in the area where the steps are, could you have used pins for that also like at the top so you could adjust for different heights like if your close to a curb
ABSOLUTELY, and something I thought about immediately after the video went live. you can definitely add lock pins to adjust the height if you wish. Here is the link to the ladder if you want to purchase it: amzn.to/3JCNWRA
I installed this last December. I've not had it a year yet but used it many times and see no reason it would last many more years. I bought it on Amazon and only paid 33.00 (a used deal)
Nice, thanks for sharing!
Those straps are not going to last if exposed to the elements. They'd last a lot longer if you use a tonneau cover on the bed. Even then I give them 4-5 years before they dry rot and fall apart.
my concern as well, although plastic buckle releases at home depot are $1.98 for the pair. I think I might upgrade to a metal in the future, but interested to see how this holds up for a little while. If it does need to be replaced every 4 years, I guess thats not a big deal either. I'm also tinkering around with making a strap that can be completely moved off the tailgate for loading purposes.
I've had my ladder for 4 years and use it a lot. It came with bolts and I changed them out with quick pens and they made adjustments a lot easier. I'm 75 years old and it is a blessing for getting in and out of my bed. Love the product.
Thanks for sharing my friend!
HAD OURS FOR OVER A YEAR. lIKE IT A LOT-WOULD BE BETTER IF i WAS 20 YEARS YOUNGER.
you're not kidding!
Time will tell but do you think the feet of the ladder would kick out depending on the surface?
Doubtful, rubber feet and keeping the ladder at 15 degrees per the instructions makes it highly improbable.
I like the treads on the Beech Lane version. I have the Traxion version and like the strap on the Traxion much better. That plastic clip on the Beech Lane that is on BOTH of the straps is no bueno - I'm guessing a tote, piece of wood, or your foot - something is going to crack that inside half of the buckle. The Traxion version uses a cam buckle so its only one sided and just leaves the webbing on the inside of the truck. Although, that is easy to swap out by removing the bolts and putting a cam strap in place of it when it happens.
Great install instructions Ross!
For those looking to compare here's an install I did on my other channel: ruclips.net/video/a26Fyh7UTNA/видео.htmlsi=mDIrN57lWSxBvC6G
Hey Josh, I probably should have mentioned it in the video, but the way I mounted these straps, the back strap sits below the tailgate when opened, and the front strap will rest down between the tailgate and the bed where it wouldnt be contacted by anything going into the bed. For me, I would need a better hand hold, I have one bad eye and I’m 77 with sore knees
Edward, i just wrap my hand around the top of the bed above the tail light. you cal also get one of these: amzn.to/3MQcTKR
TRYING TO THINK UP A SIMPLE HANDHOLD FOR THE REAR STAKE POCKET.
I'm already thinking of some mods for this.
Got one on my truck, be careful of the tailgate cable, you can trip on it
already have 🤣
I had one on my last truck and I plan to put one on my new truck. It comes in handy when you get to 65 and 4 back surgeries.
i bet that helps with a bad back!
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Yes it does!
Great product, but not sure I would install as we have a 5er and can’t use when towing 😢😢
Shouldn’t be in the way at all.
should be still usable, more so when its not connected to the 5er, especially considering you probably have a tall truck.
Great review. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Just installed mine on my RAM 3500……..
nice, how did it go?
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS 👍
good, remember, lifetime warranty... if you have an issue with the strap or buckle, they will send you a new one. They are even kicking around the idea of changing the buckle to a metal sinch buckle. But for now you cant beat the lifetime warranty.
What happened at the end???? 😳
The wind blew my tripod over... it was my iphone, not one of my nicer cameras so no damage. The lens crack was just added for sympathy 🤣.
Part 3 eternabond?
this summer, stay tuned.
Wow! First love your channel! Second love your new truck…it’s a beaut! Three I just bought a new to me truck too and I’m 5’1” so always a struggle to get in the bed…this is now on my birthday wish list! Thanks for sharing!!
thanks Christine, hopefully you get it for your birthday!
We have had this on the back of the truck for several years now! It’s a lifesaver!!! Will put it on every truck moving forward.
nice, thanks for sharing.
I am so ordering one of these when my truck gets here
nice, what truck are you getting?
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS "We" are still discussing it. That means I want the Dodge 3500 HO cummins and she wants the GMC Delani 3500. Sure hope I learn to like the GMC LOL
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Looks like a great product. Price is reasonable also. Like you, getting in and out of the bed us getting increasingly uncomfortable. The only issue I see is, with the ladder sitting on the tailgate when down, sliding something like mulch into the bed would require unstrapping and deploying the ladder. Minor, but a small inconvenience.
that is one downfall... if i am putting something heavy in the truck ill either just rest it on the ladder then slide it in, or just open the ladder altogether... as you said a very minor inconvenience in exchange for the convenience of not having to climb in and out.
I installed one on my 2019 ram 1500 a few years ago. I love the product.
The problem is with the super thin metal used to make the tail gate. The screws will strip the tailgate pretty easily. Be careful when tightening.
exactly, thats why i always hand tighten when going into metal.
Had one for about 4-5 years love it. I attached a piece of pressure treated 2X2 with some bungee cord to a nearby bed tie down. Place the 2X2 in the adjacent stake pocket for an assist handle when using the ladder.
great idea!
I think this would be great on any truck. I will bring this to my comity for discussion. But I am getting tired of climbing in the bed using the truck tire.
I was too, even being able-bodied, it was getting old.
Ross, I think your channel is great and it’s one of my top 3 channels…but just a No on this one man.
no on what? the ladder?
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS yeah. It just seems a bit “janky”.
Brad, you dont have to apologize for not liking every product we use for RV'ing. I actually am starting to love this ladder. The control arms are independent of each other so it does twist a little bit before it hits the ground, but once it does its solid. No complaints so far, but again its not for everybody... my job here is to give people options, not convince them what they should buy. I appreciate that we are in your top 3 and glad to have you here.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS it’s funny that I’m a 52 year old man and find it cool that you took the time to reply. The other two are All About RVs and KYD(they helped to convince my wife to try RVing). I’m glad they did and we both love it. Now, you and Jared help me to keep things running properly as well as making things more efficient; therefore, pleasant. I’ll be doing my eternabond project soon enough.
Jared's a good dude, very knowledgable, and Im humbled to be mentioned in the same sentence. I take time every morning to read and reply to comments, and then usually throughout the day. It is something I will always do as I feel its important within our community, no matter how big the channel gets. Cheers my friend, and safe travels!
I have electric latches on my Ram. Do instructions include where NOT to insert screws to avoid hitting wires or other latch components?
Doubtful. Probably need to remove the inner cover on the tailgate to inspect and determine best mounting hole locations to avoid contacting important components.
Roadie is correct, this is a universal application, so anything specific to your truck would be on you to check first.
Great idea, some type of fold up/down handle might help also.
I was thinking the same thing, and I'm brainstorming a mod for that. Thanks for the repeat visit my friend.
Nice video and review. Love the new truck! What’s that tow?
i dont remember the exact number but 16,000 lbs. payload is 4300 and change. more than we will ever need for a travel trailer. hopefully this truck outlives me.
Nice video, looks like something I need yesterday.
Hope you enjoy
Wow! I definitely needs this for my old butt.
it will be a staple on all my trucks moving forward. even if youre in good shape and able, why risk an injury when youre out rving.
I installed one of these over a year ago. One of the best mods I have ever done. Makes getting in to bed so easy. Great for the old knees.
Couldn't agree more!
Right on Ross I was pretty close on my guess lol 😆
my man!
I did get one as well but then moved on to a bed slide, that’s what you need to get, love it!
they are definitely nice to have, but you do lose a little space, and they start at about 6 times the cost of this ladder. A slide also really wouldnt be a benefit to me since I still need to get into the bed frequently to tie down our ebikes. Definitely another option though, thanks for watching!
Who knew it is that easy to install. On my list for this year
super easy... here you go: amzn.to/443kZrk
Installing mine today.
nice!
Will this fit a F250?
yep
Nice..great video
Thanks for the visit Ric!
I went with the bumper step on my Ram but I still might add this one
I was thinking about that too... just a considerable cost difference.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS holy moly I just saw the price for the ladder😡! Had I known the ladder would have been my first option…
