I wish it wasn't a requirement for the true ending. Not to mention you still have to complete the minigame anyway to get the shovel. Additionally if you fail to grab the shotgun from the farmhouse at the start of the game you automatically get a game over when you get to the Liberal Wife boss after running him over. You also have to beat the Glimbo fight which can only be triggered by clicking a bag of gold hidden near the fireplace.

Then by grabbing the fertilizer pack once again, you'll be flung past encounter trigger and onto the next area. However, you'd be missing out on a great cutscene by doing so
