Cataracts are when the lens of the eye gets cloudy; Cataracts are something that everyone gets eventually; the average age that we end up considering surgery here is around 70, although that's a wide range, there are some patients, often related to medical conditions, often has related to trauma, do we cataracts from a very early age, sometimes even as children some children are born with cataracts that's a called a congenital cataract.
There are also several patients who don't need cataract surgery until their eighties or nineties, but regardless, cataracts are one of the most amazing surgeries that I do because are usually a fairly quick procedure, patients are usually in and out, and it can be absolutely life-changing, we have the opportunity not only to take out the cataract but put a lens that in some ways can make people's vision better and less dependant on glasses than what they been most of their adult life.
So it is a very amazing procedure that we do here at our Surgery Center Palisades in Bethesda, is a wonderful job, it's a privilege to operate there and it's a very satisfying disease to take care of.
