While this video is likely to attract those who support apartheid and genocide, their comments will not be reported or deleted unless they express islamophobia or hide behind slanderous accusations of anti-semitism in an attempt to defend their support of apartheid and genocide.
A few obvious points for the slower thinkers out there:
Speaking up against genocide is not antisemitic.
Being anti-Zionist is also not antisemitic.
    Genocide is actually not defensible.

I wish more people knew that you can be anti-Zionist without any hint of anti-Semitic sentiment. That being said, Israel isn’t helping the Jewish community all over the world. Im Jewish btw and anti-Zionist.

I would encourage you to educate yourself on this topic and really consider the use of the words genocide and apartheid. 20% of Israeli citizens are Palestinian. There are full equal rights - in fact, a Palestinian high court judge sent a former Israeli Prime Minster to jail. There is freedom of movement - before terrorist activities were perpetrated against Israeli citizens, Palestinians crossed to and fro into Israel for work. Road signs are in Arabic and Hebrew. Compare this to how many Jews live in the surrounding regions (a handful to none - they were driven out). You, personally, couldn't even visit many of these countries if you had an Israeli stamp in your passport. Incidentally, Syria is a true apartheid state. Palestinians there have been massacred in their thousands, can't own land or vote etc. The event described in this book was perpetrated in extremis on October 7 and is still being inflicted on the Israeli hostages. I would also say that people who are gender fluid, trans, gay etc. would not receive a warm reception in Gaza or surrounding states but would be welcomed in Israel. It's why gay Palestinians run to Israel for sanctuary and not Egypt. Look into how women and gay people are treated in these places and consider whether your perceptions of the only democracy in the region have been skewed. I would urge you to listen to all you can from Mosab Yousef, the son of Hamas's founder. He now lives in Israel. He will educate you on the reality of the situation - and why words like apartheid and genocide are so wide of the mark and how Hamas relies on what they term 'useful Western idiots' to jump on this particular bandwagon. He will explain why Israel is currently at war and how, more than any other army in the world, they work to reduce civilian casualties and how no other army has had to fight an enemy that embeds itself so totally among its own citizens and glorifies sacrifice and martyrdom. More civilians have been killed in countries like Syria, Yemen and Myanmar than in the whole of the Israel Palestine conflict. It totally dwarfs it, yet nobody refers to that as genocide. Pakistan has expelled more than half a million Afghans in the last year and will be expelling the same again. Have you seen marches over that? Over the 600,000 killed in Syria since 2010 or the 240,000 in Yemen etc? Ask why there are people chanting 'from the river to the sea' whilst not even knowing which river and sea they're chanting about - far less the fact that this is a call for the genocide of the Jews. Ask why you believe the figures coming out of Gaza, even though they are put out by Hamas. Or why people were so quick to believe it was Israel who blew up a hospital and why, within minutes, the fact of 500 dead was not only swiftly counted but also believed without question and put out on the news. And why, when it later turned out it was a mis-fired Hamas rocket that had caused the destruction, that wasn't so newsworthy - or why people still insisted it was Israel, even armed with the fact it wasn't. Ask why 72% of those killed are women and children and how, in reality, that's not statistically possible. And why the death toll ignores the fact that it includes Hamas terrorists. Daily reported rates increase with what experts call metronomical linearity - a regularity that cannot be mathematically real, and expected daily variations are lacking. Ask why you don't believe Jewish people should have their own state in a region that's their historical homeland, pre-dating the birth of Islam by over 1,000 years. A homeland they've had a continued and unbroken presence in, despite being persecuted and driven out from, and then persecuted and driven out from everywhere they've ever been, culminating in the death of over six million of them. There are so many myths about Israel and white European settlers. 60% of Jewish Israelis are dark-skinned Sephardic. Zionism has been turned into a dirty word. Essentially, it's the right of the Jewish people to have self determination in their historical homeland, where they've had a continual presence for thousands of years. Yet before Israel had taken a single retaliatory move over the biggest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, people were out rejoicing and marching. But they not marching week after week over genuine genocides; it's utter hypocrisy, driven by a skewed narrative and a total lack of understanding of the region. I truly urge you to look up Mosab Yousef for the most honest and accurate insight you will get into this conflict.

Thank you, Willow. From the bottom of a Lebanese heart that has known how little Palestinian lives have mattered since she was in elementary school. (How little Arab lives mattered, let alone Palestinian ones). A heart who witnessed Palestinians' suffering and death, live on my living room TV, more than a decade before phones and social media. Thank you. I will never forget this.

‏Thank u, Willow. As a Palestinian, I have no words that can express how much I’m grateful for the fact that people worldwide, from all nationalities, are finally open their eyes and see the reality as it is. A harsh, cruel, disappointing reality that we’re living. I heartedly appreciate you for using your platform to enlighten people about the history of the Palestinian people through literature, it gives me hope and consolation which I desperately need at frightful times like these..I’m sending u love from Palestine🩷🩷

Glad to see you covering this book! I found out about it through the frustrating news that its German translation won an award at the Frankfurt Book Fair, and then had its ceremony canceled following complaints from right-wing critics due to the October 7 attack and following conflicts. It's really sad to see right-wingers shut down discussion on this novel, but it does seem like the whole controversy only had people talking about the novel even more now.

Thank you so much for your clear and explicit words about the genocide in Gaza and the occupation of Palestine. You are only one of two Booktube accounts I know of that have done so, and I have found the silence to be disturbing. And also yes, I agree that Minor Detail is a must read!

    • @WillowTalksBooks
      @WillowTalksBooks  9 месяцев назад +2

While I absolutely will not defend anyone’s choice to not speak out and to choose silence, I have heard that RUclips is burying videos that support Palestine, and even demonetising them. So maybe money-driven RUclipsrs don’t feel the “incentive” to speak out, or they don’t think it’s worth the “risk”. Or maybe they fear the backlash from mental gymnasts who will invade their channels with accusations of antisemitism etc. I really can’t say. And honestly, I feel guilty for not speaking out on my channel until now (although I’m certainly not quiet about my support of Palestine on social media).

I will not watch your review yet because I want to read the book first but I thought I'd click on the video for stats and to thank you for using your platform to promote Palestinian authors. While I am not Palestinian, I am Arab and I have been feeling so lonely for the past three months. The only people on my feed that talk about Palestine are POC, and most of time Muslim and/or Middle Eastern/North African, and it felt so depressing. Thanks again for your review (pretty sure it's brilliant as usual) and I will come back later to share my own opinion :)

"And he does it several times." OH MY GOD!
It's even horrifying knowing that this isn't just a mere fictionalization of the experience of Palestinian women and children.
Thanks for continuously using your voice against the genocide, Willow. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece as well. I hope more influencers/people with big platforms on the internet follow your steps. We still have a long way to go. No one is free until all of us are free.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E Frankl came in at the library this weekend and I read it in two sittings. It is about a jewish psychiatrist who survived concentration camps and lived to develop his psychiaric theories.
It is great, but as a European most details of his story was sadly familiar to me already.
Palestinian stories I am not very familiar with. And I barely know how to find them. So thank you! These kinds of book recommendations are the most valuable to me! ❤

Thank you for sharing this book. As a Palestinian, I'm quite surprised that there are people out there who are still interested in the Palestinian narrative and yet are putting it under the spotlight. The book seems to be dealing with sensitive topics that I really don't have the heart to read about. Maybe when this madness is all over, I'll give it a shot.
