As a rookie cop, I frequently visited Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (Norfolk). I met children with illness similar to your condition. I was impressed with the toughness and resilience of those kids. And I wish you continued success in life. Be Well.

As I write this, a young teenage relative of mine has just finished her first round of chemotherapy to treat a rare form of cancer. Though we're not close, I feel for her and for her parents. I'm not able to do much from where I am as it's a two day drive to get to Texas from here, but since I'm a graphic designer I have designed a couple of cards so far. She loves her cat and this gave me the idea to make cartoon versions of my own cats who talk to each other for a momentary cheer. Your folder of hospital milestones and occurrences must have been so important for morale boosting and to break the monotony of the long time there. The prognosis for my family member is good, and I hope what pittance I can provide for her helps with her recovery. Seeing this video gives me hope that my modest efforts will help too.
PS. I'm a 46 year old man and I still think Hello Kitty is one of the most adorable and charming of characters.

Hi Izzy. You have asked what we’d like you to tell us in videos. Here are a couple of ideas. I follow Shoeless Jo, and I’d be interested in your take on two of her experiences.
    1. She takes her leg off frequently through the day. I know you’ve said you basically wear your prosthetics from sunup to sundown, but do you sometimes give your legs a rest toward the end of the day? Also, do you do any special care for them, since they’re in the sockets all day?
    2. Jo spoke recently about needing quite a bit more food since she lost her leg, and her research bore out the need for this, as much more energy is used getting around. Is this your experience also? Do you need more food for energy than your friends and family?
If these topics are too personal, please forgive me.

Jo is a Below knee amputee so it is easy for her to be able to take her leg off & on but being an Above knee it’s not so easy to take them off and on due to clothing so above knee amputees tend to wear their legs all day or for as long as they can. Being both bilateral upper limb and Lower limbs it would take more time and energy to keep taking them on and off, which would get in the way of daily activities. I’m an AK and I do have no leg days to let my leg recover esp if I’ve over done it but most of the time my leg is on from when I wake up until I go to bed and put the leg on charge. You do have to take extra care of your skin so you don’t get sores and do need to maintain our weight so our sockets stays fitting right. Yes amputees do use more energy depending on what level amputations they have, which is why maintaining fitness and eating right to help fuel the extra energy is really important. Hydration is also important for socket fit and also because you tend to sweat more because your leg is inside a silicone liner and socket as well as burning more energy to move about . I do get tired more too, I hope this helps in anyway 🤗🤗

I’m so glad the QMC do this, I spent most of my childhood on D34/35 (QMC)and they didn’t do this back then 👵🏻😄, we did have teachers come in to make sure i kept up with school work or run arts and crafts sessions. I’m so glad that they made these diary folders of your achievements through your recovery it really makes such a huge difference as you can look back through it and answer any random parts you may have forgotten. It sounds like your med team really tried to make sure you had the best care not just medically but as a whole. We are so lucky to have our nhs and the amazing people working within it. Such a great post Izzy 🤗🤗

As an adult who is currently in (a UK) hospital I can confirm you just lie there on your phone - they have TVs but they cost an absolute fortune and aren't that good. But especially with covid and that there's just nothing to do! If I have time to pack (and someone to help me pack) I bring craft projects so I have something different to do and I do have a pre packed hospital bag with puzzle books and colouring books

yeah I spent 2 days in hospital early last year after being taken in by paramedic and my only entertainment was my phone, thankfully I was able to charge it!

It's great that some forms of meningitis can now be vaccinated against. Hopefully one day all forms will be preventable.

The hand sanitizer thing probably isn't exactly PTSD (not that you couldn't/ wouldn't have it from your time in the hospital). There's this thing that when a you get food poisoning from something, you sometimes end up not liking that food or it makes you feel sick, it happens on a subconscious level (I couldn't stand fettuccine alfredo for years after getting food poisoning from but I never understood why that was). Since taste and smell are so connected, that's probably what happened to you with the antiseptic smell.

Did you have any teachers supporting your education that you missed out on in hospital? It’s just that my mum was a teacher on a children’s ward, giving children lessons if they were in hospital either long term or short term. 🧁😊

Okay, I had jaw surgery at 17, and was in a children's hospital. They still have clowns, and they will apparently visit patients even if they are old enough to drive (I'm in the states, so driving age is 16, not that I could drive after the surgery, I couldn't even shower alone until I had already been home for a week).
