    It’s unbelievable that one homeless man, who has lived on the beach for many years, survived this hanging on to a tree in Galveston!

    @MrSapphire
    The reason Ike did so much damage, was that the hurricane-force winds were spread out almost the entire width of the storm, which was itself incredibly huge. Even the strongest hurricanes, Andrew included, had the highest winds in a rather small area near the eyewall.

    I remember when I was in the Navy, I received orders to go to Galveston to do hurricane relief after Hurricane Ike. We spent a month handing out bottled water and supplies to the locals. I will never forget all the dead farm animals and people's property floating in the harbor we pulled into. This video doesn't do justice in terms of the destructive power of hurricanes!

    True! it was like pioneer days. Our whole neighborhood was out for 2 weeks. We all met at different backyards taking turns grilling food and sharing water.

    A bit hit me in kentucky it was wonderful but horrible at the sametime. I rode my bike without pettling it was pretty fun. But it knocked out our power for like 3 days. But not long after that we had an icestorm which knocked our power out for like a week. But outside during the icestorm was horrifing. *crack* *icesickles falling* *BOOM* and every crack you just waited and hoped that the branch would'nt hit your house. It was almost impossible to sleep.

    what's with hurricanes and Houston?

    • @indigolights365
      @indigolights365 6 лет назад +3

      Believe it or not but we don't get that many hurricanes, this was the last one before Harvey hit, that was a total of 9 years. The only other times we get "hit" by hurricanes are just the tail fins of what hits Louisiana. Like issac, Rita, and Katrina.

    • @gavinchavez5202
      @gavinchavez5202 3 года назад

      Houston rarely sees hurricanes. Usually we get hit by tropical storms and rain making storms since were a hot spot for moisture to stay healthy. But ike was our last direct hit we took.

      @Jck9102 8 лет назад

      Plus because it was so big those winds that were "just" a category 2 even though it was 1 mph shy of being a category 3 lasted forever. They can classify it not as a major hurricane, but its size caused such a storm surge that made it the third costliest hurricane ever. It was the second until Sandy. I emailed the NHC and told them they needed to rethink their classification on what was a major hurricane.

    They talked about Ike on the national news for like a day after it hit even though it was the largest north Atlantic storm in recorded history. With Katrina and now Sandy they will report on it for weeks on end. Ike destroyed much of Galveston and all of the Bolivar Peninsula. 100s were killed and it got little media coverage with the exception of the local media that reported none stop for several weeks.

    Oh lord, I remember this hurricane, definitely not as bad as Harvey. Harvey would have killed Ike. But I got to thank Ike, if it didn't hit us, we would have never gotten our roof fixed, that would have left our house in a lot of damage from Harvey, so thanks Ike.
