I love the idea of simplifying the left hand while bringing out the right hand melody! I learned this piece (Chopin waltz) and constantly struggled with the left hand, wish I saw this video sooner! Thank you Ashlee!

While this is not quite the same for the same purpose, it has enabled not so very advanced students to play the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata easily and beautifully.
    1. I go through the music and circle the group of notes that comprise each harmonic change, (in this case, hands together). So some circles encompass a whole measure and some only a beat. (After showing them how I do it, it would be a good idea to have them try to identify the "circles" themselves.)
2.Then I have them master the 1st block chord, and then the 2nd block chord, i.e. master each "circle".
    3. Next they must master the switch from the 1st "circle" block chord to the 2nd "circle" block chord, back and forth
4 Finally they get to play the two adjacent "circles" as written.
5, Then they must master: the 3rd "circle" block chord, the switch between the 2nd and 3rd "circles", playing the 2nd and 3rd "circles" as written, and finally playing the the three "circles" still as block chords, and last, the first three circles as written.
    >An even better application of the idea is to start with the last tiny section ("circle" in this case), master the "circle" just previous, hook them together, still as block chords, and then hook them together as written. This starting from the end and working in increments towards the beginning, has the added benefit, that the player always knows what is coming next better than what they are already doing! It also provides systematic practice starting from anywhere and going forward.
    >As for dealing with key signatures with lots of sharps or flats, I have them remember or mark the naturals! Thus B major/g# minor, D flat major, F# major/G flat major, and even C flat major (fortunately not so common in real life) become the easiest key signatures to manage mentally. In an extreme case, one could even photo copy the music and use a highlighter to mark the naturals. (The orchestra player/librarian in me makes me teach even beginning piano students to NEVER mark printed music with anything other than a soft lead pencil.).

Musicality is always a most beautiful goal. Love it.

YES. I adore this strategy and do love reductions of harmonic rhythms as I agree that adding ease can transform musicality and build confidence and security. Fabulous video, Ashlee!

Being able to move the focal point of your mind where all those factors come together is a wonderful thing if this helps you get there it's a good thing so absolutely the mind can be programmed as long as you know how to program

Jazzers have a way to recognize the chords in a given piece of music. The melody is often just an elaboration on the basic chords.
