Ron, this is the first video from you that i've had a bit of trouble with. I get the gist of what the smart connect is, but it took a bit to put it together. You spend the entire video explaining what they are. You don't show it in action though. I'm still not clear on how it stays in the holes without dropping through. We never get a nice close up of what this thing is. It's a tiny part which even at the closest that you show it in this video is at least 1/400th of the video size.
You needed to be more patient... he explains and demonstrates at about 8:30. The gist of it is there's a lip at the top that sits in the chamfer that he cuts in each hole, which keeps it below the surface.
I can easily imagine putting about a dozen of the smart connects to good use. Thanks Ron.
Hi Ron...
Excellent idea - I would take 2-Doz. of the smart connects, along with the knobs, if they become available.
Thanks for reaching out to the woodworking community with your idea.
Awesome product, and much needed. I will need 10-20 of them.
yes, yes, yes. You are not alone. I would love these. I use extensions for my Paul Bench now and the clamps below are pretty hard to get seated. You need dogs to make the alignment already so this is the perfect solution.
Hey Ron nice design. Always good to go simple. Probably 10 to 15. Thanks.
WOW! I’d say that’s a home run. Yes, I would be very happy to buy these. Great work guys, thank you. I can see using twenty to start.
Great 👍🏼 idea! 20 pcs for me as well. As a new woodworker with a tiny work area these would work great with the PSB I’m building. Having the capability of adding any of the extensions on the fly and remove and use as needed, these adapters are a no brainer!!!
The item you are describing is already available from Axminster in the UK. It is called an "Anchor Dog" and is available as a pair for $14.00, US dollars. It is made of Stainless steel instead of aluminum. Yes, of course, there are tax and shipping expenses but is available now. If your supplier can make them for less that would be great.
Thanks for your work. I have incorporated many of your ideas.
I have lots of UJK tools including my favorite Parf Guide MkII. I searched everywhere for this type of dog and didn't find it. Let's see what these guys come up with, maybe making it out of aluminum will be less expensive than stainless steel, though $14 per set sounds like a great price.
I think you will find that the 'anchor dog' is only 18mm long, not 35mm. They would therefore not perform the same function.
True.
@@TheSmartWoodshop The Axminster "Anchor Dog" is only 18mm in height. With a suitable thread length on the knob, they could still be used to join a smart panel to the smart workbench or MFT etc but there would be potential for the upper board to move out of square unless your tops are 1/2" then the dog would sit a few mm into the table below. I would be interested in some of the new 30 smart dog product. I agree it would be great if supplied with quality knobs
I saw the Axminster Anchor Dogs. Those are 18mm and do not extend below an 18mm sheet of plywood and down into the top of the smart bench. They would need to be longer like 30-35mm in length.
Ron, another stroke of genius (and stable to boot!). I’m in for 30.
Ron, thanks for another great idea. I have the Fastcap version of your bench. Love it. If I wanted to add pieces to make my surface 4X8 and break down sheets, how many separate pieces would I need, and how many of the smart connects would I need? I would definitely be interested in this.
Set of 8 to 10. I was actually trying to solve this problem this weekend. Thanks again Ron
Hi Ron, just bought your plans, haven't started building bench yet but soon.
I was wondering how it attach things when I saw your video this morning.
Simple and versatile. Perfect!!!
A set of 12 would probably be a good starting point.
Looking forward to learning what it would cost.
Thanks.
I never saw the announcement that they were available (from TSO), but I happened to spot them in their store this morning. I ordered a pair to try out.
I see lots of comments wanting 10-20 each, however I wonder what their real order will be when people see the price tag. TSO bench dogs and knobs are $40/pair... I'd be surprised if yall are really going to spend $200-$400 for these.
What good are these new dogs without the knobs? The knobs are the holding force, after the dogs align, you need both.
I'd consider 3-5 pair but spending even $50 on these would be a stretch, I've already got the clamps.
I wonder if a threaded insert in a split dowel could work?
Another great idea and collaborative effort.
Yep, perfect. just built my first Smartbench and about to build a router top and would love these vs those extra clamps. i'd take 10 or so.
Looks like a smart idea. I would be interested in around 10.
I'll likely build some version of the smart total station soon to accompany my PW2. Lots of router operations setups in my small exterior wood window shop. Being able to switch out a plywood router table (I'll eventually work up to the Woodpecker inserts and Paulk Router Tables) quickly will help my efficiency a lot. I'd be in for a dozen of these. Thanks Ron!
I like the idea of the smart connect. I would probably use between eight and 12. Also Ron
Look at a company called bench dogs UK they manufacture small hockey puck like mushroom pegs that raise up from the bench 2 to 4 mm that enable you to not use sacrificial strips when you were cutting. They also They also manufacture fence system that you may want to look at also. Keep the great videos coming you really improved the way I think about working in my shop and what I do and what is necessary and what is not. Jim
I was checking out the UJK anchor dogs that are flush with top, but they are only 18mm long so wouldn’t align the add-on panels. These are perfect. I would take 24. Got to have some for the cross cut guide, along with other items you mentioned in video.
I’d do 12-14. Just added the crosscut jig to the bench and am building a mitre saw bench now. These would come in very handy for all the extras 👍👍
I would be interested in 8 again depending on the cost. Like the concept
I made something similar to this out of PLA and my 3d printer. Only takes some M6 bolts and nuts and only costs a couple of £. Works very good and strong enough. Plus the nice thing I recessed the nut in the dog so it the tracksaw goes into it, it doesn't hit the metal. And anytime I need more I just print them. Happy to send a sample/pics or to share the STL 3d printer files.
wow that sounds perfect for this application. i would imagine you could also redesign for 3/4" dog holes? are you considering selling the connectors, or the CAD or STL files? either way thanks for sharing the idea.- 🔧Lisa♿
@@geolisadrag-racing2349 Im happy to share the stl files for free. However I have no clue about imperial measurements sorry.
Is this something you would put on thingeverse? I would be interested in making it and see if it would work.
@@cycleranger Could you upload it to thingiverse? I would be interested in printing a few as well.
brilliant!...have been using very similar but with regular dogs to secure accessories. This would really take it to the next level. Guessing a dozen or so (depending on cost).
Probably 24. I was also curious about your sacrificial biscuits. Do you make your own or are they available for purchase?
I would take 4-6 depending on the price. Just ordered the ujk parf guide system. I'm planning on building a bench based on your plans. Would also be nice to extend my MFT when cutting larger pieces.
I would love a set like up to probably 10 or so would work for a start so hope this will work out seems like a great product
I would consider 10-20. Another thought would to have it threaded at the top or right through as well to be able to add other attachments in the future such as standoffs etc.
These connects could be used with any mft table or layout, not just the smart benches. Fantastic!
Great idea! I’d buy at least 10 of them.
Hi Ron and Hans. Like many others, it depends on price but the concept looks sound with Ron’s month of use and proof of concept. I would likely start with four to verify they work with my Paulk bench dog-holes and if they fit, then I would likely order 8 to 12 more (again, depending on price....since the clamps go about $15 - $20 but are multiuse tools and not dog-hole only.). Thanks for all the innovation! Be safe.
I just finished a PSB this weekend and 12 of these would be perfect!
I like them they seam like a great idea. The price will determine the initial success; after that a torture video showing the weight they can support on the bench extension they will sell like any other bench accessory of they're price category and market size.
I've been using what you're calling "smart extensions" on my 6 yr old 4'x6' OG Paulk bench and my 1'x4' multi clamp mini bench, that I designed myself, for a few years now. I use bolts & knobs, rather than clamps. It works, but it involves separate bolt holes & extra tools. I'm planning on upgrading and building both of the new "smart benches" this winter. If the price is right, I'd definitely be interested in this product!
Yup I think 8 would be good. I just finished my smart bench( old style) and have been trying to do clamping voodoo with my existing clamps. Having to use ton more wedges and claps on the bench than really needed to hold down work.
Sold in packs of 4 I would probably buy 2 to 3 packs. Simple, great idea. I can envision them having multiple uses. 👍🇬🇧
These are much like the UJK Parf Anchor Dogs except they are twice as tall.
I'm currently building a Smart Bench to go with the Compact bench i built last year. I'd probably buy 10-15. All depends on the cost.
I'd grab 10-20. Great idea!!
Hi Ron
As always another great idea !!
I would probably get 12 to start
Those look very similar to the Parf Anchors from UJK/Axminster. I like that yours are taller. I’ve got the UJK version and I don’t use them as much as I thought I would but they are nice to have...just in case.
Ron, I would love these! I actually just purchased a couple hundred dollars of bench dogs from TSO for this very purpose. I selected a variety of types from their product line because I didn’t know which would work better given the different needs I have for them, but all suffer from having to extend above the surface. The smart connect dogs would be better.
How many I got would depend on price. Their dogs are about $25 to $30 for two and their speed knobs are $16 for two. If the prices are comparable for the smart connects, that’d be about $21 to $23 per smart connector, or $42 to $46 to use them to secure a bench extension.
At that price point, I may just prefer clamps. But I’d almost certainly get a couple to try out and see whether and how much I preferred them to clamps.
I would definitely consider 10 at first. I would highly suggest as others have said, a kit including knobs. A 10 pack kit decently priced should be a big seller, at least amongst our community.
I make my own Bench dogs and I will buy these! Great Idea Ron! I looked at buying the British made 20mm "Bench dogs" brand full package of all the sizes i think I need and its so expensive with tarriffs taxes etc, I decided to make my own. I bought 4 -4ft sections of 20mm precision turned 6061stock and 50 steel collars with set screws shipped to my door for about the same amount of money. However I will have a lot more dogs of any height I want after cutting the 6061 stock clamped on my chopsaw. I can adjust the height of my collars as needed also! If I need to I can mark the center and tap them with a 6mm tap after clamping and drilling them on my drill press. 6061 can be machined with most of our tools used in woodworking, routers, sanders, drills, blades, can all be used. Its not as hard as steel. But It MUST be clamped solidly! You can get hurt or destroy your machines if you do NOT CLAMP IT SOLID! I have routed 1/2 thick 6061 with a 3hp Porter Cable router for an engine plate in a race car. Its not rocket science, not to me anyway.
Just starting the whole system and I would order some, may 6 to start!
Yes, I would buy at least 12! Thank you!
Ron - depending on the final cost I would have use for 10 - 12 also. Thanks
I think that’s an awesome idea. I would use 10 to 12 of them between my 2 benches.
I’m in! I’d purchase enough to be used for the new smart station!
Interesting idea but ended up being the same price as clamps ($20 ea - dog + knob). They do solve the other issue you were trying to solve (ease of use & small under table space saving) so kudos there. Interested in how they're working out with some long term use. Does the chamfer in the dog hole start to wear from the pressure pulling them down into the dog hole?
I think this good if you dont want to modify the top. I have the Woodpecker dog set and one pair of dogs has a small lip (1/8" tall, i think) that could be recessed into the top with a forstner bit and still have the majority of the 20mm hole for standard use. I can see modifying 2 holes for dedicated mounting use. That may be easier to machine than the chamfer.
Looks like a good thing! My guess would be 4-6? Keep us posted...
I would definitely like some of those. I would wonder if they could make them in 3/4" and 20mm, and I would want at least 10-15 of them.
Looks like 6 for me, I'm a small woodworker in a shed wood shop. Great idea
I will take about 20, preferably anodized in red so I can see them quickly when I breakdown late nights at times
I have your 3’ x 5’ workbench ordered through Fastcap now I would really be interest in buying your smart router table instead just the plans and those knobs for attaching because I’m really limited in space in my shop and that set up would be the perfect solution.
Fast cap stopped selling the RP bench’s. I believe Ron mentioned that they discontinued it because it wasn’t working out financially ..., I could be wrong. But they now sell a VERY similar modular system with no mention of Ron. I don’t know if they screwed him over, but it appears that way. So, I don’t believe there is a way to purchase a physical RP bench.
It would cool if Ron sold Cnc files that one could take to CNC ship. Shopbot has or had a program where a customer can buy a design file and have it cut by a local “Shopbot approved” CNC shop.
fotopdo I agree I want to buy the smart router table already made not the plans maybe Ron will consider hooking up with a company to make his products with his plans
HELL YEAH. I'm buying the PARF guide very shortly to make up several portable tops, and those connectors open up HUGE possibilities. For a reasonable price, I would buy a dozen or more. Don't need fancy anodizing, just accurate (and smooth) machining to keep the cost down. The 20mm scheme certainly is the most common, but your mfg. contact might also be interested in a 3/4" version for some bench systems, such as The Armor tool bench. Those are becoming VERY popular, especially for some folks who just buy their hardwood tops, pre-drilled.
Great idea, I would want 10 to start.
I would buy 14-20. I'm just getting ready to make your tables. I'm not sure what they could be used for beyond the extensions, but I would probably get 20 if I knew what else you were planning to use yours for.
I would be interested in four for a start. More if they prove useful in workshop.
I’ll order 20-30 w/ handles NOW (more than happy to beta test prototypes - need them ASAP) - currently building 4 new of the new benches, a NEW PSS and PSB for myself - and two more PSB’s for my brother and father) - so will need some for their benches too.
I would be able to use 12 or so. Nice idea!
I'd be down for about 10 of these but wonder if they will be available for those of us that have built around the 3/4" bench dog system.
Awesome design Ron, I would buy 4 - 8 depending on price...
Hi Ron, Great idea. The other advantage these Smart Clamping dogs give you is being able to utilize the threaded hole for hold-down clamping from the top face,
so maybe a 10mm Tapped through-hole would be an improvement to the design, just a thought for a more multiple application of the part giving greater value. Keep up the good work, Stay Safe
At first i was thinking that I'd be in the 'probably none' camp, but your idea of turning them upside down has me rethinking.
@@TheOneWhoMightBe Hi Thanks for your positive reflection. Although you can easily do that, there actually wouldn't be any need to invert the Smart Connector as it would be held firm with the Clamping Knob & with the thread going right through the connector. Either way of use, it makes it more cost-effective & therefore better value. Lets see if they like my idea for improvement. Cheers
@@roybull6740 Ah, I see. I was thinking you meant insert the Smart Connector from underneath and then screw in from the top, pulling the SC up into the ply. I guess a threaded through-hole would allow both methods.
@@TheOneWhoMightBe That's it, either way, it works but does need a through threaded hole. Not think 6mm Thread would be strong enough, hence suggesting 8mm Thread.
If they also made a shorter version, approx 16mm long, it could be used on a single sheet of Board. It would work well with a short version ( for Single thickness sheet) & additional straight spacer with through hole ( to allow the same Chamfer ended part + Spacer for Double thickness sheets), this would make a very nice kit. The thread on the Clamping Knob would need to be longer. All ideas at this point,
I am building your SmartBench and have 3 MFT . It will be a useful addition. I will need about 20. Continue your great work
Ron do you expect a production day and the prince?
Price
Indeed very handy. I’m in for 20 as well
Hey Ron, I couldn't tell if the threaded hole in the "Connect" went all the way through the device. But if it did, you could use another knob to fasten things to the top of the bench temporarily to use, like a vise or something else?
I'd order 20 to start with depending on price. Also dependent on whether they could be shipped to Australia.
Definitely interested. I would need 2 dozen to start out.
I would think i would use a dozen of them depending on price??
You could attach them to the bottom of several large tools (pocket hole machine) and mount them to the bench.
Ron I love the idea I could use a set of 8.
As always another awesome idea and I would purchase 8-10
I would like 6 please
I think it really depends on price. I'm in if it's a reasonable price, only because the clamping solution works for me already.
I have the shorter units right now, but would be interested in 20 or more.
Probs would need 15-20 with current set up.
Kickstarter is a brilliant idea to get this to market.
I need a set of 10-12.
Great device. I was trying to make my own but it would be much easier to buy a set.
P. S. I’m loving the bench development ideas. Trouble is I’m spending more time building bench accessories and less time working !!
These would be awesome to make jigs for use with my MFT. Like make a right angle like a square with 2 or 3 holes and use the dogs to hold them down. Use the jig to reference a right angle to build boxes and sucH
I would definitely interested and would purchase about 1--16 as well as some knobs if they are going to market those as well
Corrections -- would be interested and would purchase 10-16 not 1
Looks like a game -changer, Ron! I'd order a couple dozen if the price point made sense. Would anodizing increase the diameter?
Great tool supper easy to turn on a CNC turning tool. I would pick up 8-12
I would order, depending on the price, at least 14 conectors and knobs. If the price was reasonable, I would likely order 10 more for a total of 24 of each.
Sounds great, I would buy some.
This is great! I've wondered about this exact thing. Depending on price point, I would definitely be in the market for such a tool. I would say 10 would be good starting point batch for my needs. Namely, being able to attach extensions/transformers to psb.
How strong are they when holding say your extension boards and they're cantilevered out? It would take significant weight to dislodge your traditional clamping method, this would be a tiny ring at the end of a dog.
I could definitely use at least a dozen.
Hey Ron, do you have a vid showing how they are used exactly?
I need about 20 of these!!
I would consider 10-20 depending on price! Will need them to be ship to Canada
I would order 20 units with knobs.... of course would love to see the pricing first. thanks again Ron.
At least 10. Great idea.
Those look useful, I would be interested in 4-8 depending on cost.
I would buy 4-6, my primary use would be to attach the smart router extension
I’ll definitely be ordering some of these. Most likely around 8-12
They seem simple enough. I'm sure they'll sell. Just waiting for the Paulk thingie holder for the bench
Soda can holder hanging off side of bench? Or tool pouch?
I would buy a few, Ron!
I am definitely interested and would purchase them for my MFT
Put me down for 20. Brilliant!
Hmm.. sounds interesting for sure. How would export to EU be? Usually things from the US become really expensive once it ends up in your mailbox here
I will go for 10 of these.
Do a kick starter. You could sell smart workbench plans and dogs both. And all of the mechanics would be in place so that if people said they wanted them they would get charged for them etc. (avoid people who say one thing and do another) just my opinion. Cool innovation regardless.I might need some eventually but not in the foreseeable future, I need to get a workbench done first.
Great idea I would be interested in about 10.
