absolutely agree! Some music remains relevant for millennia. This one is one of those. the subject matter always was and will always be in real life. "Strangled by the wishes of pater, hoping for the arms of mater", "nothing had the chance to be good, nothing ever could", "I'll keep holding on"...that reality will not ever change imho. It will be real for untold numbers of people, no matter how far in to the future life persists.
Mick's got that rare gift of a pure, clear voice. His style is borne of soul and the grist of life's travails and beauty. It's bittersweet without ever falling into maudlin territory.
I love to watch your face Fil, as you watch the performance. Your face and body language give you away. Another thoughtful analysis Fil. You are always spot on, in my opinion. Couldn't agree more with your analysis of the lead singers proficiency. He is so clear and on key. Just a flawless performance.
Do you know the story of this song? Mick wrote this song at the age of 17 at his father's house, he talks about the desire to leave his father's house and When he says "Hoping for the arms of mater" he talks about the mother who abandoned him when Mick was 3 years old, this song has a very emotional charge for him
It grabbed my emotions from the very first notes the first time I heard it in 1986 but I didn't know the story until just last year, then I cried! Kinda silly for an old man lol.
I heard that story too and is so believable as he sings it. I can feel the pain in his heart directly to mine. This message was meant for Wanessa Santos
Yes, Mick's ability to deliver studio quality vocals live through the decades, and maintain every vocal register, is INCREDIBLE! The structure of Mick's songs, the themes, the insturmentation, everything about Simply Red is finessed. So many times the melody and delivery of the lyrics match the meaning of the words. Pure artistry. I love how you highlight all these things Fil and am so glad that you have covered Mick. Have you a done comparison between early Mick and Mick in, say the 2018 Symphonica in Rosso performance. That would be fascinating. Thank you again Fil for being such a great champion of great musicians. Love and Peace :)
"Ive wasted all my tears, I've wasted all those years"... I didn't understand when I heard it first. It was a great song, a wonderful sound, but just words. I think I get it now. "Youth is wasted on the young" but no Mulligans in this game.
I think I read the song was about his childhood and relationship with his mother who basically abandoned him when he was very young. Makes a lot of sense from that perspective.
This song came out my senior year of high school and really pulls heavily on my emotions when I hear it now. It must be because it hit at a crucial year in my life. It helps that it is a masterpiece too!
Great analysis Phil! I see the appreciation in your winning smile! For me personally, I joined the band. as bv's in 92....it was pleasure singing with Mick for so many years, I learned exactly what your vid is about. He has an incredible voice, that doesn't falter.
This has been one of my favourites since first hearing it, when it was first released. The muted trumpet sounds like it's mimicking Mick's vocal. And his vocals are amazing!!
First, thank you for your analysis. I could relate to this song when it came out so many years ago, mid 80's. They also did a great cover of "If You Don't Know Me By Now".
Wow...what a great sounding LIVE band! Great job, Fil, deconstructing the vocal performance. The dynamics, the phrasing, the vibe, etc. It's all there in this performance. Impressive stuff, to say the least.
I agree. I recently bought an old cd of Simply Red’s in a 2nd hand store and I have it playing when I’m driving. The quality and clarity of Mick’s voice has blown me away! - I didn’t realise this before. The only album of S.R’s I’ve heard up to now, is ‘Stars’, but I’ve never listened to it in a car (or earbuds, in the 90s). Somehow it cuts through in the car (or maybe it’s just me…) and at times I’ve realised I’ve been holding my breath, listening to Mick’s clarity and emotion and control of his voice. - Incredible! When I realised I was doing this, I instantly wanted to come here and listen to your critique, Fil… And I’m not disappointed! - You’ve hit the nail on the head, but more than just that, you deconstructed the whole song, musically, as well! - You dedicate so much time and effort and have such skill, to give a complete analysis. You really are dedicated to your craft, and the love of it shows, and touches us deeply. Thankyou Fil.
I've always loved his voice. He can really sing. It's a good quality voice. It's pure and he knows how to use it. I don't think that many singers can pull this song off!!
I absolutely love Simply Red. Mick’s voice is stellar. They never toured in the USA that I know of. Fil, you gave a fantastic analysis of Mick’s vocal ability and the band. You are so awesome in your analyses. I search for them because you are so objective and spot on. You Rock!!!!
I love the richness of Mick’s vocals, and the range. The way the rythmn goes right hrough his movements.Beautiful.One of my favourites (with it’s official video),is,a new flame has come.
A great band, and Mick is simply one of the greatest singers of all time. What a voice! This song is a masterpiece with great lyrics and delivery. Thanks Fil!
You explain things in a way I wouldn't notice otherwise. What's striking to me about this is in the audience attention and engagement. Lookit! They're actually watching the performance, and not thru tiny screens. Also, back in those days, we used real fire and not the glow of a cellphone. Simpler times. :-)
Of course, NOW I know why this was always such a haunting song whenever it came on the radio! Thanks for telling us to turn it up, it sounded awesome in the headphones! Very nice vocal and guitar demo, thanks for it all!
No cover could ever work for me with this one. I love how much you appreciate this vocal and give an amazing analysis! Love this channel on RUclips. Thanks so much.
Everything about this performance is "Simply" stunning!!!! I have loved this song from the moment I heard it! This live arrangement and Mick's voice gave me chills! Your analysis was spot on, Fil....as always ; )
Not only is Mick's voice incredible, but the SOUND they achieved on this recording for everything - all the instruments and dynamics is incredible. It's especially evident now when few "live" recordings or performances are actually real anymore. This is REAL.
I’ve been waiting on this one. They were so important during my teenage years. I still ove that jazz/pop/r&b sound. Mick with that Motown influence is one of my favorite vocalists. Thanks Phil.
What you said about Mick never 'ducking' notes is so true. I've seen some performances where he's older, and maybe they don't come as easy as they used to, but he gives absolutely everything he has to hit those notes. He really pours it all out on stage, and I have such deep admiration for that.
Mick’s voice is like your smile, gorgeous. Brilliant video, thanks Fil ( So great as well to see the audience enjoying the performance without mobile phones ! )
When MTV came on our tv's in Australia Simply Red was the first concert broadcast. I sat there in amazement at the quality of the musicians and Mick's vocal ability. As you said Fil he was able to replicate his studio performance to a degree I had only ever heard before from the Hollies. Mick's tone and timing is superb. He seems to glide effortlessly into his phrases (like Sinatra), never rushed and so very soulful. A special performer. Obviously chooses his musicians with the skill of someone at the top of his game (I'll even forgive him for being a United fan). Thanks for sharing and analysing.
This is another song Simply Red sung that is on my top charts. Mick has a voice like no other I can remember off top of my head. There were so many songs in the day that the band had on the radio it was a pleasure to just drive and listen. Thanks, Fil, for playing this long forgotten but easy to remember the song again.
I remember when the song was originally released and the first time I heard it I thought WOW that's one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard, just perfection, not referring to the music but just the voice, the vibrato is nearly perfect, his climbing the notes, his timber just stunning.
In December 1995, I saw Mick Hucknall perform at Wembley Stadium in London, and it was and still remains one of the greatest performances I've seen in my life. Even though I was way up in the cheaper seats, Mick connected with everyone, and his warm and charismatic energy filled the stadium. Mick said that he was told by some that he'd never make it big in the music industry because he was so homely. Thank God he proved them wrong -- and if you are beautiful on the inside, it is impossible to be anything but beautiful on the outside.
so glad that you pointed out the fact that he sings live with a studio voice. a lot of people THINK that this is commonplace, bc they only know modern live music that is processed in many ways in real-time.
Thank you for your reaction. Mick Hucknall is the man with a saxophone down his throat! What voice! And that song is the song of my life, I love you Mick Hucknall.
I absolutely love this song. A friend and I took ballroom dancing lessons (so he would learn to dance at my daughter's wedding) and this was my favorite easy piece to dance to. Thanks for this. It brings back the memory of a grand time. Yes, I have lots to catch up on.
Very much an example of a voice being an instrument within the instruments. His voice ebbs and flows, it blends with and then stands above the instruments in the mix throughout. His vocals have always been so effortless the craft is easy to miss.
Mick is one of the artists whom I regret never seeing live in concert although I don’t remember him touring extensively in North America. What amazing control he had over his vocals with the ability to sound shrill or even coarse when he needed to. I’m not sure what reservoir he drew from to write his songs and sing but it’s hard to think of many other male singer of his era or since with the same heartfelt soulfulness (Jeff Buckley perhaps?).
I did get to see him in San Francisco years ago. It's the best concert I ever saw. Mock was awesome his band was awesome. The crowd and band loved each other. It was a magical night. ❤
Knowing the meaning of this song..& how young he was when he wrote it..just brings me 2 tears. Love his voice & how strong, yet tender..just blows me away. Thx 4 this review, Fil 💕💕
💕 FIL! 💕 This is one of my all-time favourite songs EVER…. I love the video they made for this song all those years ago and have watched it more times than I could ever count. I truly love and appreciate that you cover some of these older but INCREDIBLE artists! Thank you so much! 💕🌟💕
I loved Simply Red as a kid and I love them even more now. Mick’s voice is incredible. Thank you for this genuine and in-depth reaction. Your love for his voice and the band really shines through.
He is so amazing, one and only. His emotion is shown in his artistic vocals. Wow, I love him. I'm in the U.S. I wish he'd come here. I'm gonna see him, even if I have to go to Europe. I'm 67, so who knows how much longer I'll be around, I have always wanted to see him. Thanks for the review. It was exceptional.
He really puts his heart into wanting everyone to feel the song the same way… brilliant! No one misses out on a beautiful performance at every concert! 😊
I hold on too long🎶. Great pick for analysis. He simply has a gorgeous voice! Love a muted trumpet! Fil you are truly a beautiful person! Thank you for what you do!!!!! ✌️ and 🤘
Such an under-rated voice. It's almost ethereal in it's beauty. You never find him on any top vocal list or accredited for much but his voice is an undeniable powerhouse. I married a red head because of Mick, and well I'm a bit of a ginger myself!
This song is the lead track in my life's theme music. It could not be more dead on or descriptive of what I look like on the inside. btw, I LOVE it when that big beautiful smile breaks out on your face 😃. Its my favorite part of watching your analysis; love it all but can't help it, the smile wins. Thanks for the work you do for us. 🙏🙏I really enjoy your videos. 🦋🌦💖💗
I was in Dakar, Senegal when I first heard this song. It played on the hotel loop every half hour, or so. Never got tired of it and can't for the life of me remember what else was on that tape. Mick's voice! It was a lonesome time, nights in that hotel, and Simply Red was beautiful company.
Great performance of a memorable Big hit. Always loved his amazing unmistakable vocals. Full of emotion & feeling . The entire band just stellar! Great stuff. Your analysis was spot on. Thanks Fil! 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
His performances NOW are still as great, one of the best singers ever, i remember when this song first came out on the radio, i loved it then and to this day it still grabs my full attention.
Such an effortless, pure vocal. He's blessed to have that voice and we're blessed that he continues to share it with us.
A song of a lifetime, a singer of a lifetime! This one will never go away. Someone will always be turning someone else on to this classic.
absolutely agree! Some music remains relevant for millennia. This one is one of those. the subject matter always was and will always be in real life. Mick's got that rare gift of a pure, clear voice. His style is borne of soul and the grist of life's travails and beauty. It's bittersweet without ever falling into maudlin territory.
One of the most gorgeous songs ever written, and this is a utterly fantastic performance.
I love to watch your face Fil, as you watch the performance. Your face and body language give you away. Another thoughtful analysis Fil. You are always spot on, in my opinion. Couldn't agree more with your analysis of the lead singers proficiency. He is so clear and on key. Just a flawless performance.
I sometimes watch the analysis twice. Once for the overall enjoyment and then a second time to watch Fil's reactions. The appreciation is sincere.
Ditto
Yeah, I watch for him to smile. We usually smile at the same point. 😂
Hey, I just wrote a comment and snuck in something about Fil’s smiles. I’m glad it isn’t just me that is watching for the smiles😄

A true soul man. Really, a true passion man. That's what I call Simply Red. Passion Music. A unique, sharp, and haunting voice.
What. A. Voice.
And great hair, obviously.
I haven't paid attention to this song for years and now it touches me deeply. What a beautiful song, Thank you! Just ordered the CD.
Wings of Pegasus, I loved the moments when you simply and genuinely smiled in appreciation while listening. Bliss. 😇
When he starts in with that crystal clear tone at 0:49 seconds, I just got chills.
I love Mick,, I’m 42 years old now , and he’s still my favorite :) best voice ever , haunting voice in a way 🤔
This song came out my senior year of high school and really pulls heavily on my emotions when I hear it now. It must be because it hit at a crucial year in my life. It helps that it is a masterpiece too!
I always loved this song without a thought to its meaning. Beautiful on all levels.
What a great performance...it does sound just like it did on the radio. Went back in time hearing this song, powerful. Thanks Fil.
Great analysis Phil! I see the appreciation in your winning smile!

Seen you many times with the band Dee 🤗 Why doesn't he have backing singers like you and Sarah Brown any more 🤔
@@infinitesam5880 ...his new phase I guess...

Mick's voice is truly amazing and i never got fed up with all his songs!. Love simply red love Mick Hucknalls ❤️❤️❤️

I love Simply Red. Thank you so much for this one, Fil!
Very, very few vocalists have such a wide variance of voice character, dynamic control and a true sense of melodical expression and timing. prose.
I've always loved his voice. He can really sing. It's a good quality voice. It's pure and he knows how to use it. I don't think that many singers can pull this song off!!
This would be a hard one to sing for anyone.
Yes, Billy Eilish proved this!
That trumpet is fabulous!
Boy he can sing...
My Mississippi saxophone would sound really good in this one....
Plus flamingo guitar action...
I'm in heaven...
Thanks professor 😊
Put it on youtube!

Love, love love this song. How do people write these beautiful words? I don’t know how it touches your soul the way it does.
A great band, and Mick is simply one of the greatest singers of all time. What a voice! This song is a masterpiece with great lyrics and delivery. Thanks Fil!
So beautiful! I’ve always loved Simply Red, and this song. Thanks Fil! You teach us so much, and make us better listeners! ❤️
I always thought this song to be a very melancholy and contemplative song. One of my favorite tunes of all time.
You explain things in a way I wouldn't notice otherwise. What's striking to me about this is in the audience attention and engagement. Lookit! They're actually watching the performance, and not thru tiny screens. Also, back in those days, we used real fire and not the glow of a cellphone. Simpler times. :-)
I love Fil’s beautiful smile! I smile back every time I see it!
Mick’s singing voice is phenomenal! Great vibrato! Love his red dreadlocks!

You've done it again Fil. Love, love, love Simply Red and this fantastic song! Thanks so much for this choice and your analysis.
Everything about this performance is "Simply" stunning!!!! I have loved this song from the moment I heard it!
This live arrangement and Mick's voice gave me chills! Your analysis was spot on, Fil....as always ; )
Fil, much of the enjoyment of your analysis videos is watching your grin when something touches you.💕
Not only is Mick's voice incredible, but the SOUND they achieved on this recording for everything - all the instruments and dynamics is incredible.
It's especially evident now when few "live" recordings or performances are actually real anymore.
This is REAL.
I love this analysis, Fil. What a song! You hit this one on the head.
That man can sing, amazing, and so accurate. Love listing to him, and the band are amazing... was hard to stop listing to make a comment :)
That must be an amazing feeling as an artist the first time you hear a crowd sing back the lyrics to a song you wrote!
I’ve been waiting on this one. They were so important during my teenage years. I still ove that jazz/pop/r&b sound. Mick with that Motown influence is one of my favorite vocalists. Thanks Phil.
such good wording while singing.. . understanding every nuance of his vocal sound here..
I freakin’ love this song! His vocals are impeccable 🎤🔥💕
What you said about Mick never 'ducking' notes is so true. I've seen some performances where he's older, and maybe they don't come as easy as they used to, but he gives absolutely everything he has to hit those notes. He really pours it all out on stage, and I have such deep admiration for that.

I saw them live in Brixton 1985. They were the opening act for UB40. I was blown away by Mick and the band! UB40 was awesome also....
I saw uber 40 at a nightclub before they were famous.....truly awesome....🙂🙂
What a great show that must have been! Super jealous.
Simply Red's Mick soulful voice is something I can't get enough of. It's like Sade or something.
I was there ,AMAZING my favorite band .Thank you ❤UK

I remember when the song was originally released and the first time I heard it I thought WOW that's one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard, just perfection, not referring to the music but just the voice, the vibrato is nearly perfect, his climbing the notes, his timber just stunning.
Love Simply Red. Hey Fil! Hope you're staying well.
What a great sound
In December 1995, I saw Mick Hucknall perform at Wembley Stadium in London, and it was and still remains one of the greatest performances I've seen in my life. I became aware of Simply Red through (MTV) always enjoyed your analysis regardless who you are featuring on any given night. 👍

I RECENTLY WATCHED ONE OF HIS CONCERTS AND HE BLEW ME AWAY!! GREAT PERFORMER!!
FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD HIM ... WOW 😍😍😍
Saw them at Wembley Arena … two stages - a really tight band … and then that voice on top … probably an underrated band.
One of the finest. Phenomenal song and phenomenal voice. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 have loved it since I was 30yrs younger.
Here it is!!! Yeah!!! What is it about his voice? Gives me shivers 😮

Thanks, Fil. I bought their first cassette when it came out. Listen to it every month or so. Strong then, strong now.
Say what you will, hucknall is a great singer
This song is the lead track in my life's theme music. It could not be more dead on or descriptive of what I look like on the inside.

His performances NOW are still as great, one of the best singers ever, i remember when this song first came out on the radio, i loved it then and to this day it still grabs my full attention.
