Such an effortless, pure vocal. He's blessed to have that voice and we're blessed that he continues to share it with us.
A song of a lifetime, a singer of a lifetime! This one will never go away. Someone will always be turning someone else on to this classic.
absolutely agree! Some music remains relevant for millennia. This one is one of those. the subject matter always was and will always be in real life. "Strangled by the wishes of pater, hoping for the arms of mater", "nothing had the chance to be good, nothing ever could", "I'll keep holding on"...that reality will not ever change imho. It will be real for untold numbers of people, no matter how far in to the future life persists.

Do you know the story of this song? Mick wrote this song at the age of 17 at his father's house, he talks about the desire to leave his father's house and When he says "Hoping for the arms of mater" he talks about the mother who abandoned him when Mick was 3 years old, this song has a very emotional charge for him
It grabbed my emotions from the very first notes the first time I heard it in 1986 but I didn't know the story until just last year, then I cried! Kinda silly for an old man lol.
I heard that story too and is so believable as he sings it. I can feel the pain in his heart directly to mine. This message was meant for Wanessa Santos
One of the most gorgeous songs ever written, and this is a utterly fantastic performance.
Mick's got that rare gift of a pure, clear voice. His style is borne of soul and the grist of life's travails and beauty. It's bittersweet without ever falling into maudlin territory.

"Ive wasted all my tears, I've wasted all those years"... I didn't understand when I heard it first. It was a great song, a wonderful sound, but just words. I think I get it now. "Youth is wasted on the young" but no Mulligans in this game.
I think I read the song was about his childhood and relationship with his mother who basically abandoned him when he was very young. Makes a lot of sense from that perspective.

That line gets to me.
When he starts in with that crystal clear tone at 0:49 seconds, I just got chills.

Very, very few vocalists have such a wide variance of voice character, dynamic control and a true sense of melodical expression and timing. prose.
Not only is Mick's voice incredible, but the SOUND they achieved on this recording for everything - all the instruments and dynamics is incredible.
It's especially evident now when few "live" recordings or performances are actually real anymore.
This is REAL.

Yes, Mick's ability to deliver studio quality vocals live through the decades, and maintain every vocal register, is INCREDIBLE! The structure of Mick's songs, the themes, the insturmentation, everything about Simply Red is finessed. So many times the melody and delivery of the lyrics match the meaning of the words. Pure artistry. I love how you highlight all these things Fil and am so glad that you have covered Mick. Have you a done comparison between early Mick and Mick in, say the 2018 Symphonica in Rosso performance. That would be fascinating. This has been one of my favourites since first hearing it, when it was first released. The muted trumpet sounds like it's mimicking Mick's vocal. And his vocals are amazing!!

I always loved this song without a thought to its meaning. Beautiful on all levels.
I've always loved his voice. He can really sing. It's a good quality voice. It's pure and he knows how to use it. I don't think that many singers can pull this song off!!

This song came out my senior year of high school and really pulls heavily on my emotions when I hear it now. It must be because it hit at a crucial year in my life. It helps that it is a masterpiece too!
You explain things in a way I wouldn't notice otherwise. What's striking to me about this is in the audience attention and engagement. Lookit! They're actually watching the performance, and not thru tiny screens. Also, back in those days, we used real fire and not the glow of a cellphone. Simpler times. :-)

I saw them live in Brixton 1985. They were the opening act for UB40. I was blown away by Mick and the band! UB40 was awesome also....

I absolutely love Simply Red. Mick’s voice is stellar. They never toured in the USA that I know of. Fil, you gave a fantastic analysis of Mick’s vocal ability and the band. You are so awesome in your analyses. I search for them because you are so objective and spot on. You Rock!!!!
In December 1995, I saw Mick Hucknall perform at Wembley Stadium in London, and it was and still remains one of the greatest performances I've seen in my life. Even though I was way up in the cheaper seats, Mick connected with everyone, and his warm and charismatic energy filled the stadium. Mick said that he was told by some that he'd never make it big in the music industry because he was so homely. Thank God he proved them wrong -- and if you are beautiful on the inside, it is impossible to be anything but beautiful on the outside.
That man can sing, amazing, and so accurate. Love listing to him, and the band are amazing... was hard to stop listing to make a comment :)

I agree. I recently bought an old cd of Simply Red’s in a 2nd hand store and I have it playing when I’m driving. The quality and clarity of Mick’s voice has blown me away! - I didn’t realise this before. The only album of S.R’s I’ve heard up to now, is ‘Stars’, but I’ve never listened to it in a car (or earbuds, in the 90s). Somehow it cuts through in the car (or maybe it’s just me…) and at times I’ve realised I’ve been holding my breath, listening to Mick’s clarity and emotion and control of his voice. - Incredible!

I remember when the song was originally released and the first time I heard it I thought WOW that's one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard, just perfection, not referring to the music but just the voice, the vibrato is nearly perfect, his climbing the notes, his timber just stunning.

What you said about Mick never 'ducking' notes is so true. I've seen some performances where he's older, and maybe they don't come as easy as they used to, but he gives absolutely everything he has to hit those notes. He really pours it all out on stage, and I have such deep admiration for that.

His performances NOW are still as great, one of the best singers ever, i remember when this song first came out on the radio, i loved it then and to this day it still grabs my full attention.
Mick is one of the artists whom I regret never seeing live in concert although I don’t remember him touring extensively in North America. What amazing control he had over his vocals with the ability to sound shrill or even coarse when he needed to. I’m not sure what reservoir he drew from to write his songs and sing but it’s hard to think of many other male singer of his era or since with the same heartfelt soulfulness (Jeff Buckley perhaps?).
I did get to see him in San Francisco years ago. It's the best concert I ever saw. Mock was awesome his band was awesome. The crowd and band loved each other. It was a magical night. ❤

When MTV came on our tv's in Australia Simply Red was the first concert broadcast. I sat there in amazement at the quality of the musicians and Mick's vocal ability. As you said Fil he was able to replicate his studio performance to a degree I had only ever heard before from the Hollies. Mick's tone and timing is superb. He seems to glide effortlessly into his phrases (like Sinatra), never rushed and so very soulful. A special performer. Obviously chooses his musicians with the skill of someone at the top of his game (I'll even forgive him for being a United fan). Thanks for sharing and analysing.

Very much an example of a voice being an instrument within the instruments. His voice ebbs and flows, it blends with and then stands above the instruments in the mix throughout. His vocals have always been so effortless the craft is easy to miss.

This is another song Simply Red sung that is on my top charts. Mick has a voice like no other I can remember off top of my head. There were so many songs in the day that the band had on the radio it was a pleasure to just drive and listen. Thanks, Fil, for playing this long forgotten but easy to remember the song again.

I seen so many bands and artists over the years. From Genesis to Rammstien to Simon & Garfunkel to AC/DC. Literally hundreds of Artists from the late 1970s to present day. A few years ago I bought tickets to see Simply Red for the first time. Didn't have great seats at the NEC Brum. Was blown away by his reproduction of his hits. Saw him the other week back at the NEC. Still the same absolute perfection. By far without doubt the best live performance I've ever heard. And yes he doesn't dodge any notes like some people. I'm looking at you Elton John & Stevie Nicks. The least we say about Meatloaf (RIP) the better.

I absolutely love this song. A friend and I took ballroom dancing lessons (so he would learn to dance at my daughter's wedding) and this was my favorite easy piece to dance to. Thanks for this. It brings back the memory of a grand time. Yes, I have lots to catch up on.

I was in Dakar, Senegal when I first heard this song. It played on the hotel loop every half hour, or so. Never got tired of it and can't for the life of me remember what else was on that tape. Mick's voice! It was a lonesome time, nights in that hotel, and Simply Red was beautiful company.
His voice is what we all wish we could possess in tone, texture, range, soulful, amazing quality of control to perfection. What a natural gift and talent. Only Mike can deliver it this way. It’s his and he owns it.

I don't think Heitor Pereira played on this track, but man his light touch on the guitar was key to Simply Red's sound on so many great songs. Absolutely amazing! And Mick's vocal - outstanding and still absolutely OUTSTANDING in 2023! And what charisma! Love that Rhodes sound of the 80's...

Nick is such an underrated talent. He sounded great filling in for Rod Stewart on the Faces reunion tour. Here he doesn't seem to be into the performance and it still sounds amazing.
