    Thank you so much for this! I had always heard that Rysanek delayed singing Salome for twenty-five years, and judging from this, it was worth the wait. Her steadily increasing hysteria just prior to receiving Jochanaan's head is alone worth having waited all these years to finally see it. Amazing singing actress.

      Who do you consider the greatest Salome, Jason?

    • @jasonhurd4379
      @jasonhurd4379 3 года назад

      @@Nerqc No contest for this one: the great Ljuba Welitsch stands head and shoulders above any other singer of the role. Her inimitable quality of innocent depravity combined with her uniquely bright and weighty timbre ensure her preeminence in the part.
      Strauss approached the silvery-voiced Elisabeth Schumann to perform the role, and even promised to revise the orchestration to chamber proportions to enable her to do so. Despite this considerable temptation, Schumann turned him down. Had she accepted, her Salome might well have become the gold standard in the part.

    We attended one of LR's Salomes as the Met, hoping it would be as gripping as her Sieglinde or Kaiserin, but in a more visceral way. We were not disappointed until some minutes before the end. She just pooped out vocally and those last glorious phrases were barely audible. She was still vociferously applauded. It was, overall, one helluvan evening.

    The problem is: this is the only way I can hear the finale anymore...she's just so gloriously unhinged.

    If I had a copy of this tape or disc, no matter how hoary it is, I could die happy.

    She forgets to say his name at 11:17 and the conductor realizes the mistake and 5/6 seconds later she and the orchestra are back on the same page.

    thanks for this rare video. What is the year of this live recording? She played Salome under Böhm with Wiener Phil. from 1972 to 1981 (Böhm's death). Maybe this is one of the Tokyo concerts in October 1980 given the subtitles

    Was the conductor holding a pee? Seems he wants to get out of there as fast as possible.

      Böhm - he could hardly walk at this stage but could still fire up wild tempi when conducting

    La tentazione delle cantanti wagneriane di interpretare Salome e' fantastica. Ma e' la modalita' sbagliata... Salome era una minorenne... Solo la Studer si e' avvicinata....

      Non ho mai percepito la Rysanek come una cantante wagneriana. Per me era un soprano lirico che spesso si trovava nel repertorio sbagliato. Ed è chiaro che non voleva davvero cantare Salome. La sua voce non è abbastanza flessibile e gli acuti non sono mai stati uno dei punti di forza della Rysanek. E sì, la Studer è stata fantastica come Salomè e forse ideale. Solo lirica e una Chrysothemis, ma non Isolde o Elektra.
