This is a great series. An American classic. I've watched many movies starring Broderick Crawford and have never been disappointed. Love old series and movies. From Noir to musicals, thrillers, detective, crime, drama, comedy, the lot. Bless all those great men and women.
I'm with you. Once in a while I'll watch a newer film, usual a Christian based story, but I really like the old black and white. Watching color just isn't the same.

The actor who portrayed Thornton did a good job making his character believable. You actually felt sorry for the guy, knowing that he was the victim of massive injustice. His bitterness and determination to seek revenge on the person who ruined his life was understandable. Highway Patrol episodes are _always_ entertaining, but this one was better than usual.

One hundred forty nine episodes? Oh, my, am I going binge watch supreme! When I told my sisters I've been watching Highway Patrol they both looked at me like "Why would you do that?" They both remember seeing it when we were kids in the 1950's. I don't. I wasn't old enough to watch television, and I was only interested in animal programs like Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, and marveling the stylized, multicolored peacock on NBC station breaks. Oh, and the little fairy Tinkerbell at the opening of Walt Disney. So, off to view another episode of my new favorite show, seventy ears later, Highway Patrol.
This is one of the best, in my opinion, but I'd be hard pressed to decide which one is actually the best. There are a few lame episodes. Still, those are better than most of the video produced now.

I won’t give it away for the benefit of those who haven’t yet seen this and who, like myself, read the comments before watching the episodes. Much thanks to the uploader for sharing. This is my second go-round watching. But enough time has elapsed so I’ve forgotten the stories.
I don't know, don't care, and don't want to hear about it. I only look at the character an actor portrays. I don't want to know anything about his/her life other than their acting. That's all that really matters when watching shows, this one included.
I wonder why they didn't come up with something different for Crawford to say at the end of each episode, like they did with Rockford''s answering machine on The Rockford Files, another one of my favorite shows.
One of the goofs that they made on this show time and time again was with the use of their radios. At 12:32 when this officer calls Dan, he still has his radio keyed up when Dan answers him. Both of them kept their radio's keyed during their entire conversation. This is so noticeable, especially if you have used radios a lot like I have.
Good catch. They must have had "full duplex" capable radios. Just kidding. Even if they were running in full duplex mode, the feedback (sqealing) from the radios using a speaker would have been unbearable.
And I thought that I was the only one who noticed that happens a lot in these shows. Quite often they start speaking before the microphone is even up to their mouth too. Maybe it's just something that people who use radios would notice. Telephones too.. they say hello when the handset is barely lifted up from the cradle.
@@tralfazy You mentioned telephones in your comment. The most blatant one I ever saw was a film they made in the late 1930's about farming. The farmer had to make a call on the old crank phone. He picked up the reciever, turned the crank, gave the operator the number and in less than five seconds from the time he turned the crank, he was talking to his party. Now that is way overboard. I also have saw lots of TV shows where that happens especially on the old rotary phones. They dial the last number and almost before the dial stops spinning, they are talling to the person they called. That is soooo noticeable.

Another silly TV thing that makes me laugh is the 'binocular view' where they show a view with two holes with points in the top and bottom centers. I laugh and say "it doesn't look like that at all when you look through binoculars!". Then they make it worse by having the image zoom! hahaha
Technically, with the "murder victim" alive, Thornton was no felon because the crime he was sent up for has been invalidated. Also in his defense was the fact that he was under mental duress.
It would be invalidated later on but not on the spot. I've heard of people staying in prison awhile longer until the 'system' finally releases them. Seems pretty unfair but I suppose they have to be sure of things.
One of the very best THP episodes, if not the best, but it would have had a better ending if the man who had been tied up had died of a heart attack or something. Also, when Dan Matthews said to the crook: “"I didn't come here to save you", wasn’t that exactly the reason why he tried to save him as he earlier said to detective Piersall at 10:12 that: “Were going to have to find Sylvester before Thornton really becomes a murderer.” After all, Thornton had already paid his dues in prison for killing that man and you can’t charge a person for the same crime twice.
@18:25, house in back of sidewalk hydrant appears to be #3600 Amesbury Rd. in the Los Feliz section of LA. The lot Tom “Man Boobs” Thornton walks into matches up with #3614 Amesbury Rd, but @18:30, the momentary photo of that house appears to be located a little more uphill at #3660 Amesbury Rd.
David Maslow Today's cars are pussies. haha Like all these devices. I love the one that allows the car to drive itself. What those making these things are forgetting is the majority of people do not use their heads if they don't have to. So, if a car will brake and drive itself, when that electronic part goes out, what we will have on the roads are a bunch od morons who will have no idea what to do. So, we will have more accidents. Combine that with those idiots on cell phones, texting,and drinking or doing heavy drugs all driving and we will have massive pileups any where a car or truck can drive onto. All the cars today look like pods and one looks like the other. No personality. It used to be the driver's looks suited their vehicle. Not today. I, too, remember those days. We took care of patients who were there as a result of smoking and were allowed to smoke in their hospital bed putting the care givers in peril due to second hand smoke. We were very happy when smoking was banned. Now, smoking on the grounds is banned. No smoking in restaurants . YEAH!! All you still addicted to smoking learn what COPD.stands for and what it's like living with it and dying, like Leonard Nemoy ( Mr.Spock) did. Struggling to breathe, and attached to an oxygen tank. just keeping puffing on those little white sticks and I'll see you in ICU. 🎈🎈

He had a few 'issues with booze, even had a hard time with his lines in this show. This series was a big comedown from winning an Oscar a decade before, but he made out fine here because he owned part of the show. Made bank for him till the day he died.

You don't know how right on you are with that statement! When my wife called the police in L.A. after a complete "take over" robbery at the bank that she was a manager of, it took them 40 minutes to get there! She came home that day and said, "I think that we may have to find another place (state) to move to". Less than a year later, we vacated from California where we both had lived all of our past lives' to Arizona!

+thesmkrscorner In the 50's the "Miranda Ruling" had not been settled. Cops could almost torture people without them even knowing their Constitutional Rights. Even though I've worked in Law Enforcement for almost 40 years I'm glad that people are told their rights. It makes cops do their jobs better so when (if?) a case comes to trial there is a better chance of a lawful conviction and far less likely to put an innocent person in Prison. Many people think the Miranda Ruling is anti-cop and anti-justice when actually it is quite the opposite. Remember, when an innocent person goes to jail the truly guilty person walks away free as a bird...
randy109 -I agree. I was a cop for 20 yrs. We have to do it right in order for the system to be fair and just. I said for years, if we do our jobs right, we do more on a daily basis to preserve freedom and individual liberty than the ACLU or any other misguided organization ever could. All they can do is squawk about sonething after it happens. If we do it right, we prevent the problem altogether, thus preserving freedom, liberty, and fairness. Everyone wins, hopefully
There were only ten or eleven in the whole country back then. Once the Supreme Court started sticking its legal nose where it didn't belong, lawyering spread like herpes in a brothel.
One episode, Dan demands to look in a backpack. They let him after they at first refused. No 4th Amendment rights. Very entertaining show for the era. But they played fast and loose with the Constitution.
A court is going to have to determine that and get the conviction overturned. That will require legal action. He's still a convict in the eyes of the law until that legal action is completed. Also he IS guilty of hostage taking
This episode had a lot of legal questions and ramifications. One, he racked up a breaking n entering charge. But -- as far as assault with the deadly weapon, he assaulted the guy to prevent him from getting the gun, and could say, he held the gun on him and tied him up for his own safety. That is, if he'd kept his mouth shut about his intentions to kill the guy (LOL) Totally agree with your comment on the felon with a gun issue.
Typical government balony. He does a stretch for something he didn't do, then gets pinched for carrying a rod he didn't bring to the party and doesn't even own. All kinds of civil rights violations.
This episode reminds me of a case on "Law & Order" where Burt Young was special guest star. When Dan Mathews said, "Put a tail on HIM"! It reminded me of the constant tail Jack McCoy put on Burt Young's character! I wonder if Dan Mathews is a distant relative of Jack McCoy!!! 😆 😂😜
Clearly You've NEVER been screwed by the court system. Once you've been mistreated when you were ACTUALLY Innocent you'd take a different view of this episode! My Mother and I were screwed by the court system and the people that falsely accused us sat there in court and LET IT HAPPEN! Laugh that off!
Let's get technical. If the man he was convicted of murdering was alive, then the conviction gets overturned, and then he would be able to have the gun, so he shouldn't have been arrested.

@@bertgrau9246 even if the court did not overturn his conviction , the court would have convicted him twice. One time the court convicted an innocent man for murder , then convicted him again for carrying a gun. In both these convictions the law was wrong !
I wish they had a few more minutes to show Thornton was released and given compensation for those years in prison. Oh Well, we will just have to imagine it.

He doesn't handcuff the guy, and lets the guy sit in the front seat with him, some things in this show are way off. It's on at 5am, I enjoy watching it when I wake up early. I remember this as a little kid, you don't see older men who smoked heavy like Broderick, running after bad guys today. You notice there's more older guys in this show, and their tough bastards too. People don't like looking at wrinkle skin today, this world it turning into a strange place.

Many of your comments miss the crucial point. Thornton has already been convicted of murdering "Sawyer". He has served his sentence of 13 years, and has absolved himself legally. Killing him now will not alter Thornton's conviction or his completion of the prison sentence. "He can kill him legally;" sounds unbelievable but recall the great film "Double Jeopardy". I love this series--even more direct and in your face than Perry Mason.
LOL Arrested him for carrying a gun. What’s the basis for that? Good thing they still practiced jury nullification. I think they’d have a hard time making that stick, especially since he was wrongfully convicted to begin with. Assaulting a police officer would have been more believable.
Matthews was a real allrounder. Historical securities theft should be jurisdiction of another arm of law enforcement not highway patrol. Maps & road blocks don't feel like the best tool here lol

And the not dead guy will have charges for grand theft and some sort of charge for framing his ex partner. 12021 my foot. Wouldn't stand up once the murder conviction is overturned, obviously. But they can get him on 459, 245, and 236/237 easily. 3 new felonies because of the one he didn't do. Ironic. If he had killed him, i wonder if they could have upped it to murder one, premeditation, and given him a longer sentence with credit for the 13 years he did? There's a concept. They can't bring a 2nd degree charge and then recharge him with 1st, but they can bring both charges together in the original trial, as it is the crime, not the charge that matters, in regard to double jeopardy. This is my understanding.
First these are two different crimes, the murder 13 years before will stand but the Defendant can petition the court to strike it as not supported by the evidence now known to exist. The killing of his former partner at the time of this show would be an entirely new charge for an entirely new crime. Also remember the show begins with the Defendant having served his time moved from his state to this one. Thus the murder of 13 years before would remain in the exclusive jurisdiction of that state, while the new murder would be in the exclusive jurisdiction of the state the Defendant killed his partner.

I watch the programme at a speed of 125%. That way I get through them quicker. And I can still follow Crawford’s rapid speaking.

You could see that the seeds were sown, even in the 1950's, for California's ever increasing more restrictive gun laws, back then!

Laws in TV shows are often different than laws in a courtroom.
His crime and sentence have to be overturned by a court.

You don't know how right on you are with that statement! When my wife called the police in L.A. after a complete "take over" robbery at the bank that she was a manager of, it took them 40 minutes to get there! She came home that day and said, "I think that we may have to find another place (state) to move to". Less than a year later, we vacated from California where we both had lived all of our past lives' to Arizona!

+thesmkrscorner In the 50's the "Miranda Ruling" had not been settled. Cops could almost torture people without them even knowing their Constitutional Rights. Even though I've worked in Law Enforcement for almost 40 years I'm glad that people are told their rights. It makes cops do their jobs better so when (if?) a case comes to trial there is a better chance of a lawful conviction and far less likely to put an innocent person in Prison. Many people think the Miranda Ruling is anti-cop and anti-justice when actually it is quite the opposite. Remember, when an innocent person goes to jail the truly guilty person walks away free as a bird...
randy109 -I agree. I was a cop for 20 yrs. We have to do it right in order for the system to be fair and just. I said for years, if we do our jobs right, we do more on a daily basis to preserve freedom and individual liberty than the ACLU or any other misguided organization ever could. All they can do is squawk about sonething after it happens. If we do it right, we prevent the problem altogether, thus preserving freedom, liberty, and fairness. Everyone wins, hopefully

A court is going to have to determine that and get the conviction overturned. That will require legal action. He's still a convict in the eyes of the law until that legal action is completed. Also he IS guilty of hostage taking

This episode had a lot of legal questions and ramifications. One, he racked up a breaking n entering charge. But -- as far as assault with the deadly weapon, he assaulted the guy to prevent him from getting the gun, and could say, he held the gun on him and tied him up for his own safety. That is, if he'd kept his mouth shut about his intentions to kill the guy (LOL) Totally agree with your comment on the felon with a gun issue.
He would have his murder conviction overturned and thrown out, so why couldn't he own a firearm the rest of his life?

Clearly You've NEVER been screwed by the court system. Once you've been mistreated when you were ACTUALLY Innocent you'd take a different view of this episode! My Mother and I were screwed by the court system and the people that falsely accused us sat there in court and LET IT HAPPEN! Laugh that off!

Let's get technical. If the man he was convicted of murdering was alive, then the conviction gets overturned, and then he would be able to have the gun, so he shouldn't have been arrested.

I remember this as a little kid, you don't see older men who smoked heavy like Broderick, running after bad guys today. You notice there's more older guys in this show, and their tough bastards too. People don't like looking at wrinkle skin today, this world it turning into a strange place.

he didn't handcuff the guy at first when they brought him in for questioning, but they did handcuff him in the end when he had the guy who he supposedly killed but anyways the gun belonged to the criminal who faked his own death and had all the stolen goods so in reality the one who should be getting arrested and convicted is him, and the one who was falsely incarcerated for 13 years should be getting paid back for the years of his life he will never get back and I don't think he should be charged of nothing, he didn't harm the guy he just tied him up and scared him

Many of your comments miss the crucial point. Thornton has already been convicted of murdering "Sawyer". He has served his sentence of 13 years, and has absolved himself legally. Killing him now will not alter Thornton's conviction or his completion of the prison sentence. "He can kill him legally;" sounds unbelievable but recall the great film "Double Jeopardy". I love this series--even more direct and in your face than Perry Mason.

And the not dead guy will have charges for grand theft and some sort of charge for framing his ex partner. Lot of civil liability too, if he has any assets to go after (it can't be the $$ made from the ill-gotten securities)

12021 my foot. Wouldn't stand up once the murder conviction is overturned, obviously. But they can get him on 459, 245, and 236/237 easily. 3 new felonies because of the one he didn't do. Ironic. If he had killed him, i wonder if they could have upped it to murder one, premeditation, and given him a longer sentence with credit for the 13 years he did? There's a concept. They can't bring a 2nd degree charge and then recharge him with 1st, but they can bring both charges together in the original trial, as it is the crime, not the charge that matters, in regard to double jeopardy. This is my understanding.
First these are two different crimes, the murder 13 years before will stand but the Defendant can petition the court to strike it as not supported by the evidence now known to exist.
The killing of his former partner at the time of this show would be an entirely new charge for an entirely new crime.
Also remember the show begins with the Defendant having served his time moved from his state to this one. Thus the murder of 13 years before would remain in the exclusive jurisdiction of that state, while the new murder would be in the exclusive jurisdiction of the state the Defendant killed his partner.
