- The Bird's Opening is Stronger than You Think! Subscriber Game Analysis 1x09
The Bird's Opening starts off with the following moves:
1. f4
That's it! The Bird's Opening is an easy chess opening for white to play, and it has a ton of flexibility, moves, and systems to build your game around. On this channel we have covered the chess opening theory behind the Bird's Opening and with that how to play against the From's Gambit, in addition to playing the Sturm Gambit and Swiss Gambit. The Bird's Opening is very similar to the Dutch Defense, except that you get an extra tempo! With the Dutch Defense, you can go with the Classical Dutch, Stonewall Dutch, or Leningrad Dutch. Even the Christmas Tree Variation! The same goes with the Bird's Opening as it has good chess opening strategy, chess opening principles, chess opening theory, chess opening moves, chess opening ideas, chess opening tricks, and chess opening traps. One chess video on the Bird's Opening we haven't covered is the Polar Bear System, and that should come out soon! In today's video we have our ninth installment of the Subscriber Game Analysis Series and in it we see the Bird's Opening played to perfection! We feature a subscriber who is a Bird's Opening player, and with it he got a winning position at move 7 against a 2298 player who pulled out the From's Gambit. Want to crush the From's Gambit with the Bird's Opening? In this subscriber game analysis video, we see how to respond against the From's Gambit with strong chess opening lines and variations, easily getting an advantage when prepared. We hope you enjoy this Bird's Opening game, and also learning some chess opening theory in the process!
10 Fun Facts About the Bird's Opening:
1. It is a reverse Dutch Defense, with a tempo ahead, which is really hard to take advantage of since there aren't any obvious weaknesses.
2. The Bird's Opening is highly underrated. You are getting a solid Dutch Defense with and extra move, and there are some high chances of attacking chess with a Grand Prix like system, with a tempo ahead, which many chess players with the black pieces aren't prepared for.
3. There are many dangerous chess gambits that come out of the Bird's Opening, including the Swiss Gambit! There is also the Sturm Gambit which we release a chess lesson on soon!
4. The Bird's Opening puts chess strategy at the forefront of all chess moves, as there are no weakness in pawn structure, piece development, and king safety.
5. It was popularized by Henry Edward Bird, who used it often during his career and often played aggressive and attacking chess!
6. Oftentimes, the endgames reached coming out of the Bird's Opening are better for white, especially when the chess player with black isn't prepared, as the pawn structure for white is good with very little pawn islands.
7. There are many different chess styles that can be catered to with the Bird's Opening, I personally consider myself an attacking chess player. My Mikhail Tal type style (no I am not even close to Mikhail Tal in level) often prefers crazy chess games, and if you've watched any of my chess videos, you've probably noticed! I'm trying to show that the Bird's Opening is rare and dangerous, but can be used for Anatoly Karpov type players too!
8. It is the 6th most popular first move for white! This comes after moves like the King's Pawn Opening, King's Fianchetto Opening, Queen's Pawn Opening, English Opening, King's Indian Attack, and more!
9. The Bird's Opening is one of the oldest chess openings of all time! It has a long history, and has been played by many chess grandmasters.
10. The Bird's Opening has been played by Henry Edward Bird, Bent Larson, Sam Flouyd, Mikhail Chigorin, Arne Brynste, Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov, Jose Raul Capablanca, and more!

What to Learn MORE about the Bird's Opening? Here is a link to my most in-depth video! ruclips.net/video/YbX1l6qDSaE/видео.html
Interesting and instructive game. A famous chess grandmaster once said "The hardest thing to win is a won game". This game is a good example of a won game that became a lost game, but that actually makes it even more instructive.
100%! Glad you enjoyed it. I couldn't agree more, comeback wins are fun but there is real value in knowing how to convert a winning position into an actual win.
Loved the insight.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for tuning in!
Good analysis
Thanks Robert! Glad you enjoyed this fun subscriber game. Always feel free to send your own games in, ask me any chess related questions you may have, let me know what videos you'd like to see on the channel, etc!
Bird's/Dutch systems are so fun.. it actually revived my love for chess lol
Totally! Ya I am a big fan of them both as well. Always gonna give you a good solid opening position and a fun game.
I love this opening . This will take you from . 0 to 1800 no issue if played right . I use this and The kann and been on a winning streak . Past 10+ games .
Awesome! Congrats to you my friend!
Bad luck Billi. I've played Bird's Opening myself on and off throughout most of my chess life after finding an old - 1950s - collection of Bird's Opening games in my school library. I've never worked out why it isn't more popular. After all, with f4 you dictate the opening. With e4 your opponent can chose c5, e6,e5, c6 and more. Same with d4.
Hey Andrew, I too am perplexed at why it isn't more popular. Guarantees a playable and solid middlegame position to work with every time.
I found 5. d3, g4 6. Nd4, Qh4+ 7. g3, Bxg3+ 8. hxg3 Qxh1 9. Bf4 and white is about +1 and the position is crushing with Qd2 e3, Nc3 and the Knight on d4 goes over b5 to c7... but thanks for the video ^^
Awesome stuff Billi! You specialize in what tons of people are scared to play/think is dubious!
Hey Billi, wow ya this is another route which is also good. I will have to take a closer look at this. And thanks for the game!
Nice feature, to offer subscriber game analysis.
Glad you enjoying them! Always feel free to send in a game of yours!
I always play the Bird's opening, LOL.
I respect you.
Same here. I play Bird's always. It's my favorite opening and is brutally powerful on the king's bishop line lining up the rooks and queen to checkmate the king.
I used Bird's Opening and some of my games in turns into King's Gambit. 😂
Haha facts 😂😂 - you don't like accepting the From's Gambit I assume?
Yes 😂
With From's Gambit, I always take the first pawn, never the second. The second pawn becomes a headache to deal with and not worth it for being 1 pawn up. I instead develop my knight and pawns to take control of the center. This makes a great opening for Bird's.
Totally! Ya this is one way to go about it that works well. Some like going up a pawn, others don't find it worth it. I'm a player who would rather just be sitting at even material with me breathing.
This is incredible, I don’t think I’ll be double 1.f4 again!
Very underrated opening for white!
Really good game, Against e5 i like to play e4, i feel like i can dictate the game more playing a king's gambit, than taking the from's gambit
Glad you enjoyed it brotha! Ya totally, I'm with that.
From's gambit is my favorite as a Bird's opening player. As good as Sturm gambit 😀
100%!!!
Played a 2000+ rated player who is way stronger than me. He also tried the Froms Gambit.. just to end up in a worse position.
Not scary at all if you are prepared.
Hey Leon! Thanks for sharing this, you are 100% right. It looks intimidating at first to some (including myself) but once you study it, white is much more than okay.
Our board one hit 2000 months paying bird to get people out of theory because he hated studying openings
The advantages of openings such as Bird opening/ Larsen-Nimzo(B3) Orangutan (B4) scandinavian, Dutch it's 'your' opening from move 1. Not needing to know 5 Ruy lopez systems, ( I love Bishop's opening though) no nimzo indian, kings indian, etc. It's your opening and you are more familiar with the middlegames
I just love sacrificing a big piece on opponents kingside and going for the neck😅😅…….Froms gambit still annoying though
Fun stuff!
