A classic with an updated video, to say that it does not reflect the harsh realities of the street is a fair argument. But still a classic none-the-less.
I am a Puerto Rican survivor of the NYC depression of 1980. I remember my hard life in the jungle, the system that evicted us to the streets, with an uncertain direction. But above all, Grandmaster's Furious 5 always demonstrated the strength of perseverance. But nothing happened in vain. Where are those who said it couldn't be done? Where are those who gave us over to oblivion? Today is a different story. Thanks
Would have been even cooler if the video was filmed where the original was made. It's not the same, rapping about hard live while standing on a plane, driving expensive cars etc. It identifies the Message as being a money maker and not a message anymore.
A lot of people forget the group Grandmaster Flash was rockstar fresh when it came to their gear. The clothes they wore in the Message was to fit the theme of song. Any other time they were outlandish with the outfits.
The message "TO ME" is lost in this video. I am an old head and lived in NJ back when this song really mirrored the sign of the times. Happy they got a resurgence but I think it would have made a bigger impact if they use a social conscious video like they did back in the day. Very disappointed in the video but they are still one of THE BEST to ever do it.

@William Cotton Raheim lip synced the original video. The vocals were recorded by Mel and Duke Booty (Duke also wrote the entire song except for Mel’s last verse).
I was a teenager when this came out and it was like he told my teenage life story. When it first came on I stopped what I was doing and listen. And after it was done I asked “Who was that?” My friend just smile and said “That’s Grand Master and the furious Five”…………FURIOUS…they could added me as the SIXTH. Heliobranco if you are real old school hip hop fan, which I'm leaning more toward you are truly NOT, then you know this song was used in the video Documentary “Style Wars” and was on point. It fit the narrative for that time. This was just fun and not to be associated with a Message per say. Give them a break. It’s 36 years later dude. Melle Mel was also about 15 or 16 when he actually wrote those lyrics. They weren't written on May 29, 2017. Soooo...do the math. You're comment is a prime example of why Hip Hop get's a bad rap. Start doing some homework.
You're full of shit, and shit like this is precisely why hip hop gets a bad rap nowadays. It's not about living and growing up in the hood and no one in the lower classes identifies with it anymore, oh the "woes of growing up rich and blowing your money on drugs and women". Yeah, that must be real tough.
