Everyone keeps asking me to do a Groovy MiSTer FPGA setup guide and review...so here you go! Just took a minute! Because sure we have the MiSTer FPGA N64 core, the MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core and tons of MiSTer FPGA arcade cores...but there is a whole world of games that emulate on MAME that aren't on MiSTer FPGA! But with the Groovy MiSTer core we can send MAME output to MiSTer and play all the MAME games on a CRT television or PVM television. Because CRT gaming is a thing! This is an extension of Groovy MAME that let's you play MAME on a CRT tv! GroovyMiSTer, GroovyMAME and MiSTerCast are here!
and now MiSTerCast 1.0 from Shane Lynch is here letting you stream anything from your desktop PC or laptop to MiSTer FPGA. Steam PC Gaming on a CRT? Sure! Emulation on CRT? Yep! Old 90s television shows? You got it! So grab it here : github.com/ieq...
(Note: this is not MAME running ON MiSTer. This is the video signal being processed BY MiSTer to allow for easy analog output of MAME and other emulators)
I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about Groovy MiSTer on MiSTer FPGA which is a discrete analog GPU that allows MiSTer FPGA to take video signals from your PC via MAME and output them onto your CRT television!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

Pete and Pete is easily one of the best things that has happened to humanity and is easily one of the best things that has been made by humans.
I pinned this comment because I agree that much
I have the soundtrack on vinyl, very much a prized possession. @@VideoGameEsoterica
For anyone who enjoys some of the pre-9/11 "slacker" style movies, you owe it to yourself to watch some Pete & Pete (& the shorts that led to the series for that matter). Really looking forward to when Pop Arena covers it in full on Nick Knacks. They just put up their Clarissa Explains It All episode today (also their 100th).
The fun thing about Pete and Pete is just how intelligent the writing is. It’s a totally different show when you watch as an adult
@@VideoGameEsoterica I just wonder why no one else talk about it. I always feel weird when I mention it and no one, but I mean no one, either saw it, or remember it. It's so good.
Thanks for showing me I'm not crazy and there are more smart people in the world.
So glad you're covering this. I feel like this is a huge break though. If we could figure out a way to cast from a phone I feel like getting video content on crts will never be a hassle again.
With the way things are going you never know
You can just mirror your phone screen to Windows using "connect app", this will show up like anything else in Windows on MiSTerCast.
True. I’d assume the latency wouldn’t be great. Good for watching tv. Probably not for gaming
Thank you for providing such thorough instructions for Groovy mister and cast. I followed it all to a tee, and worked like a charm. Much kudos to you sir!
Happy to do it :) just sub as thanks if you haven’t yet
Fantastic! I've been waiting for you to do a video on this! Thanks for the setup guide, i appreciate you!
I waited til it was 1.0 but I’ve had builds in the background to test on
Props for using The Adventures of Pete and Pete with MiSTerCast! It is still one of my favorite shows of all time. I have the box sets, original TV broadcast recordings, even the mail away music cassette tape you got from eating cereal :) I need to get this set up ASAP! I might be more excited for watching TV shows than playing MAME games with this!
My wifi is Krevstar 2000 lol. I get it
You always come through for me. I am super stoked to try our MiSTerCast this weekend and your walk through will help me achieve that. Oddly I am most looking forward to watching old Local on the 8’s weather channel broadcasts from the mid 90’s lol. To see that again on a CRT with that funky musac will be nostalgic bliss.
Haha I get it. It’s like a time warp
Wait what ! Sound is streamed to ? Incredible ! I purchased my mister 3 years ago. It was expensive but it turned out it was the absolute best value for my money. So many new things happened since then.
It’s def been an insane value over time
Man Pete and Pete, that episode where Endless Mike decides to join his highschool wrestling team just to fuck with Pete was legendary. Freaking amazing.
Mr Tastee going missing is one of my personal favs
Setting Windows to 960p and outputting 480i opened so many great gaming opportunities! Doom 3 and integer-scaled PSP games running through PPSSPP look gorgeous!
It’s fun we can do stuff like that
This is incredible, amazing use of the mister
And unexpected too
Pedro and Pedro is an amazing show. It’s a classic
Pedro and Pedro lol
Played around with it yesterday. So much fun!
It really is awesome
Oh man, I was like "isn't that Pete from Pete and Pete!" 😂
You know it!
I love Pete and Pete. A true treasure
The best show ever made for kids. And adults. And anyone else
I frickin love this, will be fantastic for RUclips, especially the 240p videos, I love watching old ad reels for instance, or lost media uploads on RUclips, and it also puts a new light on my vast GOG collection, many of which will look beautiful in 240/288p or 480/576i.
It opens the doors for so much fun stuff
@@VideoGameEsoterica You know you can use an OSSC or Tink with it too, if 480p/576p ever becomes part of MiSTerCast, combines with a Tink or OSSC and the like, it will be useful for running with higher res CRTs too, as well as for streamers.
That’s a possibility down the line for sure
@@VideoGameEsoterica You can have the MiSTerCast sending 240p, being sent to the MiSTer GM core being line doubled to 720x480p via a GBS-C (can add scanlines too) or whatever you have/use, great for progressive widescreen CRT TV's, crunchyrole looks so damn good with some scanlines, as do older low res RUclips vids, I'd love it if they could make a VGA RAMDAC core for MiSTer, with a 400Mhz pixel clock, there are no good external HDMI to RGB/VGA DAC's over 200Mhz.
This is truly awesome. Looking forward to getting some games and anime through this.
The best part is just streams anything. Games. Tv. Movies. Whatever
@@VideoGameEsoterica Reason I need to wait is I'm recapping my 20M4E and all the boards are still out. Thinking Alan Wake 2 will be super impressive with this!
Ahh yes that’s a good reason to wait
I wish other cores had the analogue signal position adjust. So useful!
It is a useful feature vs having to do it in the tv service mode
@@VideoGameEsoterica I haven't been able to find a manual for my TV so I'm generally stuck with everything aligned slightly left. It's not the end of the world but it is a little annoying.
Did you google your TVs model number with “service mode” in the search?
I got blazed with Little Pete like 10 years ago😂. He was playing bass in a band at a local bar and I asked him if he wanted to drop by my music studio across the street with some people for an after party and he did! He definitely wasn’t pumped about still being known as Pete, but he was super cool.
A quality story for sure. I had drinks with Mr T once. An equally fun time
@@VideoGameEsoterica that is hilarious
He was a cool dude. No surprise
Look at all the Pete & Pete love! A sorely overlooked segment of the Retro gaming market :)
I’m glad everyone loves it. It was a no brainer. If I’m gonna show 90s tv on CRT it’s gonna be Pete and Pete
Yeah, the potential here to watch old TV made for 4:3 is incredible. Also will be really curious to see how stuff like Towerfall and Shovel Knight look. I gave up on trying to use CRTdriver - fortunately this sounds infinitely easier!
I bet they’d look awesome considering their art style
This is so cool, has there been any further updates? I'm hoping to join the Mister gang with the Taki clone and wondered if something like this was possible to play older video content to my PVM. Shame there isn't mac support but I have an old Windows mini htpc (AMD 3400G, 16GB RAM) which should be capable
Some updates yes.refinements to the program
Lots of potential for this concept
So much. Skies the limit
Great video. Not sure if things have changed since watching previous tutorial videos but waiting until the Groovy stuff hits the official MiSTer core before trying (I think you needed an experimental build to get working before).
Yes it’s still on unstable
Man, Pete & Pete is a callback. I remember the shorts before it was picked up for a series.
The shorts were classic
this is insane. Can't wait to get a mister and do this
It really is like magic
Does that change the resolution at which the game is originally rendered by MiSTer or just upscale the output?
It’s downscaling the output
I was pretty hyped to try this. And it DOES work, which is an amazing accomplishment.
In its current form, it's kind of a massive pain in the ass to set up and use though, it's far from something you can daily drive, unfortunately.
Biggest issue for me is I have to set my PC monitors down to 60hz, which is kinda tedious to start, then lining up the cropped part of the screen is just a bastard sometimes.
It's sick as is, but I hope it sees more updates, cus I honestly want to use this for day to day gaming.
It’s still day 1 stuff. It’ll get better
Does MisterCast allow you to send mister connected controller inputs back to the pc? Or do your controls need to be directly connected to the pc?
PC. This is just sending a video signal
Oh yeah, going to watch some old school anime on my CRT with this!
It’s so good for old 80s/90s tv and movies
Cool project. I just think it's funny everyone suddenly cares about downscaling when it's on MiSTer suddenly. I've been working on good downscaling solutions for years now. 🤣🤣
Again, fantastic looking and a great project.
I wouldn’t say that :) there’s Groovy MAME and all the AMD cards. Downscales. I love me some downscaling
GBS-C downscaling gang
Downscaling matters for sure. Super useful tech
@@VideoGameEsoterica I've been fiddling with the rt4k and custom modelines. It has the shaping to be the best downscaler even if it doesn't want to be
Haha yes you can really get a lot out of the Tink 4K
Oh man, I'd love this on Steam Deck!
That would be pretty fun
I may finally be able to play Police Trainer at home.
Possibly :)
I would love to see if there is a FightCade integration with MisterCast
FB Neo works. I do know that
you can create a custom 4:3 resolution for your desktop in nvidia control panel
This is true
I hope it won't be too long until GroovyMister gets moved into Update All - I'm so excited about this but don't really want to fool around with the unstable builds
Just gotta wait for the changes to be merged into main. Month or so I bet
I'm just getting a black screen when trying to cast it says everything is working but no video
Odd. So the screensaver goes away but you just have black?
i remember the pete and pete theme song, very catchy :D
Show had such good music
whats the advantage over the downscaling options of some of the retrotink products?
The Tink downscaling is just easier to use on consoles. I don’t know if you could send a PC signal in easily then downscale it. This solution is very PC centric for Steam and other platforms like it
Getting a signal on my PVM but only have a black screen... when I change ratio in MiSTerCast I can see that my PVM changes resolution as well.
Did you go to unstable main?
@@VideoGameEsoterica If you mean unstable groovy main, yes. Got it running now, seems everything was set up correctly but not running on first and second try.
Playing around with my PVM 20M4E and MiSTerCast, it is amazing. THX for your content!
Glad you enjoy the videos :)
1st baby! cant wait to try it!
It’s a metric ton of fun
So if you connect the mister and your pc with an ethernet cable, how's the latency?
In my testing sub 16ms
I can finally play Donkey Kong Batrel Blast the way it was meant to be played
I can now watch Pete and Pete the way it was meant to be watched lol
Ha, we got a Robby shout out!
A shout out-sult lol
I still want a mister, this makes me want it more.. too much stuff I want to buy, not enough money. Well maybe sometime later
Lol welcome to my world
@@VideoGameEsoterica worst of all is I don’t even have a crt, I mostly play on monitor, so I need the crt to go with the mister… it never ends, but maybe that’s also the fun of it lol
I have the GroovyMister core and the modified Mister main, but when I click on "Start Stream" from Mistercast my CRT TV (running the Groovy core) just shows garbage instead of mirroring my computer monitor. Does anyone know where I messed up? I'm connecting over wifi, not sure if that's the problem.
Sounds like you are sending an incompatible signal to the tv. But yes also don’t do wifi. Could be lacking data thoroughput
Nice video 👍
Glad you enjoyed
Is this guide still up to date? Do you still need a custom mister core to run this or was this added to the dedault core features you get with update all?
Should be :)
How is the lag?
about a frame
@@VideoGameEsoterica wrong. Its more than a frame. This is currently great for everything other than action games.
Lol maybe find a more charming way to respond
this has insane potential, though the shaking on Cash Cow DX and Mother Russia is a bit concerning, do you know what you did to fix that?
Yes. Change to 320x240. At least on my PC. It’s in part dictated by your PC settings. Just needed some dialing in
@@VideoGameEsotericaOh yeah, that makes sense
hi, i did all steps and cannot get picture in the PVM (only sound) , only saw distortion, anyone have a similar problem??
Sure you are sending a signal your pvm can handle? Check the signal type. The resolution
hi @@VideoGameEsoterica thanks a lot to reply me, and... i think so... the PVM is a Sony 1942Q by Component, and in mister cast im sending 256x240 (60hz) and also 320x240 (60hz) and neither is sending anythin just a black screen or the 3 color logo is apering moving left to rigth at high speed (dont know if makes sense?)
I am pretty sure television shows were meant to be watched in 480i, not 240p.
Fixing the interlacing on the fly lol
oh this is really cool
One of the cooler non-gaming uses for MiSTer in a long time. In the “it’s not a hardware gaming core” ways
Question, im not very experienced in emulation but I was thinking of getting a misterfpga.. I already have a pc psp & 3ds. Is it the most ideal way to play most arcade games? Buriki one etc..Would just like some insight before I spend money
Buriki One does not work on MiSTer. Hyper Neo Geo does not have a core. You’d want to look at lists of avail cores and see if it has what you want
Its like crtemudriver but there IS something wrong with your aspect ratio i guess ?*?*?
It can be fine tuned. This is just an example of day 1
Have you tried the supermodel emulator with this?
Supermodel now has its own groovy build
#1 480p or lower copies of SD shows will finally happen (albeit with more equipment then one would like) #2 Using a laptop might be the best scenario for this as long as you're not playing power hungry games #3 ReDream on CRT = YAY!!!
It basically makes everything immediately possible
“Drink that… it’s milk”
What an actor. But he will always be Uncle Lewis to me
Weird, just last week I was thinking if I could somehow stream VLC to the Mister, knowing what Groovy MAME could do.
Well here it is. 😂
Haha it was done for you
Does it do video over HDMI too?
Just network
Why don't you just connect a CRT monitor to your computer? What am I obviously missing here?
All modern GPUs just will not output a 240p signal. You need old hardware that’s expensive and coveted now
LOL @ pete and pete, I remembered it existed seeing that intro for the first time in a million years. 90s was peak kids tv time. I'm gonna throw family matters and dinosaurs thru this mistercast! And yo, groovy mister as a whole is pretty cool, but damn groovy mame always sending shitty aspect ratio lookings games over. All arcade cores for mister output solid no fuss no fiddling analog out to CRT, but groovy mister outputs narrow squashed games ....
Dinosaurs has the most depressing ending of any tv show…for kids or NOT for kids
Does fightcade work well?
Works fine :) all the networking is being done on the PC side. So no diff than what you’d get w/o the CRT portion
@@VideoGameEsoterica just adds a couple frames of lag.. word
Does this work on MiSTercade?
Should work fine but I’ll ask the maker
I tried this tonight. Can’t seem to get a signal my pvm likes and it flickers like crazy.
Check the resolution
@@VideoGameEsoterica It was the ethernet settings in windows with the power saving option. Working now!
Haha that’ll do it
@@VideoGameEsoterica otherwise it really works flawlessly. Still, I’m considering a VGA monitor to add to my collection…
Can never have too many tubes!
You should start this video at the 7min mark with the explanation of the hardware setup first. Then go into the software setup.
I did an earlier video about the hardware setup. This is just a refresher
Mac Version anytime soon⁉️😨
Not that I’m aware of
What’s the latency like?
Approx a frame
Hey guys, I have GroovyMiSTer running perfectly directly from my pc ethernet to my MiSTer with an ethernest patch cable. But for some reason the second I attempt to "Start Stream" on MisterCast MisterCast crashes and I have to reboot .... I'm attempting to run on my Windows 7 PC ... could this be the issue? Does this only run on Windows 10 or above?
It may be Win 7. I’ve only tested it on 11
I just got it to work without any hiccups on my Windows 10 laptop so ……. 😅
Ahh then I think we know the reason
I'm still trying to understand why this is a better option than just connecting a PC direct, like we have been doing for 20-30 years? Sure, "new" video cards might not support analog + 15khz, but still.. Cool hack, tho.
It’s mostly the fact modern GPUs don’t allow for it / why not do it if we can? Haha
You can do the same with composite cable and any CRT, without mister.
I've been doing this for years already. There are a good choice of hdmi to component/composite/scart converters. And they are cheap.
You can easily watch your retro anime this way, having great analog vibes.
That is true. But generally I’ve found those to be a bit too laggy. This video isn’t saying “only MiSTer can do it”…it’s saying “now MiSTer can do it”
Can it do 480i?
Yep!
Input lag?
I had a frame
Any Linux support?
Not as of yet
We new new crts
That would be the dream
Red Viper v0.9.0 SUPER 3DS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😎💥💥💥💥
Lenovo Legion gang rise up
Haha it’s a nice laptop for on the go editing
"Play Doom 2016 on a CRT in 4:3 ?"
No, I wouldn't. Infact, I wouldn't want to play ANY of my Library on a 15hz CRT, that would be silly. These PC games look best on modern displays, especially modern OLED displays with HDR, 4k, etc...
Old PC games, as far back as the late 80s, were VGA, not 15hz 240p, and ran on VGA monitors, and later - SVGA monitors.
Everyone gets to decide what they want to do
