There's a reason these guitars cost so much. (here’s why)

  • The 1964 Gibson ES-335 is one of the most iconic guitars of all time, and I was lucky enough to have one in the repair shop recently. The 335 as we know it is a semi-hollowbody, double humbucker, three switch system - and if there as ever a do-all guitar, this is it.
But why do some Gibson 335's go for a few hundred bucks, and others go for almost a million dollars? What changed in 1964 for Gibson that makes this one so special? I'm hoping to answer that today.

I find it incredible that my mom perhaps born in 1952 has essentially been around since the inception of electric guitars? My understanding is that they were always something that was high and above the average monthly wage. Alvin Lee is the one who spring to mind

You know victor wooten speaks similarly about the electric bass - that it’s essentially an infant as far as instruments go. I find it helpful to keep that stuff front of mind when conversing about “the way things should be” with folks!

Well it has to be when you think of it as one generation old. To put things in perspective I think of Hank Marvin and later Knophler buying the first Stats in the U.K.

@kostringworks Yeah I love viewing those old country music videos that show guys like Johnny Paycheck with those early Bigsby Bass guitars that I think pre date the ones by Leo Fender

Wrapping the ball end of the string around a pencil or dowel will give you a good curl to help keep the string on the tiny peg while you wrap it around the tuning post, but you have to keep tension on it or it'll pop off even with the curl.
Stew Mac has an adapter called The Vibramate Spoiler that eliminates the problem of the string popping off the little peg.
    Bigsby's are too cool! 😎

I have to announce that after five years of struggle on my own and never thinking I would get near the independent thumb thing that something really strange has happened this week after following your videos in that it’s finally slipped into place and I cannot explain it

Dude that makes me so happy!! On that note, working on my first fingerstyle course that I’m really pumped about. Hoping it helps fill in some gaps for folks.

Take a small pliers and bend some curve into the string wraps at the ball end. Position over the post and hold it with your finger while getting the other end through its tuning peg. Now with a little pressure on the string, held high with your left hand, get that first wrap over the top of the tag end, and now bring the winds down below the tag end. Keep your string winder handy and get enough wraps to tighten the string to pitch. I used to do this on a 345 and it worked pretty well.

Interesting stuff young dude. I had an old friend that recently passed away that was a semiprofessional guitar player. (He had a “real” job that paid very well.) Had been playing since he was in his early teens. Consummate electric guitar player. Mostly rock and roll. Shortly before his death he bought and early 60’s/late 50’s Gibson ES335 that had been used a lot. I think he gave something like $30,000.00 for it! I am not an electric player at all. But I did want one to fool with. Not being the habit of spending tins of money on toys, I bought a Firefly ff338 and a cheap Black Star amp. The ff338 is an es 335 knockoff and has been perfect for my needs. Gave 139 bucks for it. Perfect for my budget. 👍
