I understand what you mean. Most of this piece is simply a pedal point set by the pianist to let the drum free to improvise on it. The song in itself is indeed rather boring, but the drum performance is out of this world, as is Roni Kaspi. She plays with a kind of dynamics at the drums that reminds at times Elvin Jones.
Since when does a drum solo need a piano accompaniment? When the drummer is female and the pianist is male? Hopefully, this gifted musician gets a real drum solo at some point.
Cohen has been playing this song with various drummers for over a decade and this section is always accompanied. She certainly does get unaccompanied solos with this trio and sounds great on them.
