- このドキュメンタリーでは、日本に住む、日本人と黒人のハーフがどのような経験をするかをご紹介します。
厚生省の統計によると、日本人口の98%が日本人だとされていますが、日本で生まれる30人に1人は両親のうちの1人が外国人の親を持っています。
そして、この傾向はだんだん増えていっています。日本人と黒人の間に生まれた人の経験はユニークでもあり、数知れません。中には、自分の経験を素晴らしくもあり、かつ、つらくもあるという人もいます。
While 98 percent of Japan’s populace is ethnically Japanese, figures from the health minister states, one out of every 30 children born in Japan had one non-Japanese parent.
This demographic is on the rise. The experience of half black and half Japanese people in Japan is both unique and myriad. Some of them would describe their experiences as one of both beauty and pain.
In this documentary we will explore the experiences of half black and half Japanese people living in Japan.

As a Japanese person, I am happy to learn about black people living in Japan and half-black people in Japan. I am not very good at English, so I would like to see all the videos with Japanese subtitles like this one.

I'm half Japanese and half black too; born and raised in the US, but I came to Japan after I finished university. In the beginning, I had worries, and my mother, really worried that I would have experiences that I wouldn't like in Japan. Luckily, things have changed since she was a young woman in the 70s. I've been in Japan well over a decade, and happily married. My husband's family is also very wonderful. Thank you for this video.

アメリカ住んでた時、日本人だからって言う理由で挨拶されなかったりレストランの注文後回しにされた。これだから日本人は…って事も沢山言われた。日本人、韓国人、中国人の女の子は軽いから簡単とも言われていた。こちら側も勝手にイメージしないで欲しいと思った。個人的には国籍や肩書きや生まれた所なんて関係ない。人として好きになれるか、信頼できるかが問題だと思う。
This is true too - a lot of black men are colorist so you must be able to judge "why" is he interested in you - it should be something not shallow, for instance like the color of your skin.

You do realize that Asians are the most successful group by race in America right? Just because an American person treated you unfairly doesn’t mean that all Americans represent that person. Generalizations of any kind are what’s wrong. Don’t generalize black people, white people, Americans or any group with a label. Especially when it’s something as negative as racism.
Here's the translation: There were times when we were discriminated in the US (like was not served right away at the restaurants and sometimes were told "see, because you are Japanese.." Sometimes people joked around that I must be "easy" because Japanese, Korean and Chinese girls are usually so 'easy'. I always wished they don't stereotypes us Asians too. However, I personally think your nationality, your social status, or where you come from don't really matter at all. How we can love each other as an individual person, or how we can trust each other does matter to me.

Man i never watched a full documentary on youtube before. This was a master piece. The editing was phenomenal. The speakers were very articulate and they had the dexterity to discuss their personal experiences with clarity. The topics were discussed in depth. The black experiences has so many dimensions and these speakers all really delved deeply into this topic of being a half black and half Japanese. I congratulate you on this. Please give us more videos of this nature. If its possible, do an in depth (a day in the life of ) for each of the three speakers. You are expanding all of our minds ranzo. Don't stop.

Agree with Cathy Saunders..."if we analyze all the peoples of the world, everyone has a mixture of nationalities. History is a story of mankind..." We have evolved as human beings, our great ancestors came from different foreign lands and migrated to our islands. I'm speaking as a Filipino from the Philippines. The early settlers came from neighboring islands of Indonesia, Malaysia, and also other countries who have African roots and so indigenous people called Aetas or "negritos" with very dark skin color and curly hair still live in our country. As a historical fact, in year 1521, the Philippines was colonized by Spaniards and was under Spain's rule for more than 300 years. Our Filipino race (known as Malay race) produced mixed nationalities, many Filipinos have Spanish blood. My great, great grandfather was a trader from China and settled in the Philippines in the 1800s. My grandfather was born of pure Chinese descent. So inter-marriages arose that time. Basically, Filipinos have different looks--some have chiselled pointed noses, others have flat, rounded noses. Others have fairer skin than the usual brown skin.
So what I want to say is that we must embrace our origins, and wherever you were born, who your parents are and now you are settled in Japan --like for these half-Japanese plus another nationality--we are unique individuals who has feelings, have the same rights and be treated equally. It's important that we all respect each other's differences and stay true to one's core values as a human being. We are all living in one planet and let's preserve mankind.

Props to the mother who raised her children alone. It infuriates me when I hear about a man not taking care of his responsibilities to his children. It also creates a perception that leads to the negative stereotyping of other Black men who actually take care of their children. My two cents worth.
I agree.
About 88% of the time, it's the mother that leaves the father. In Japan, the mother typically has total power to either deny or allow the father access to his children. It's largely like that in my country too. People are trying to push for 50/50 custody here by default upon break-up, but it's very difficult to get this changed. If you do some research, you will find that a large majority of the so-called 'dead beat dads' are simply fathers denied access to their own children -- it's a very real and very widespread problem across many countries. There is also another problem of women allowing themselves to become pregnant by someone who has no intention of staying with them, i.e. a 'fling' or short-term guy... you know the guys that women are attracted to, the 'bad boy' type. They're also the type who are not interested in being a father. Women want to have 'fun' without taking responsibility for any pregnancy which might happen.

i think that this is just a common experience with places that have American military bases. once their service is up a lot of dudes just leave their families. its not just black people , there are children all over the world abandoned by American men and its surely not exclusive to japan.

I find Nigerians are masters at integrating into other societies, learning multiple languages, and still retain their strong national character.

I agree.... and this is only a small sample.
Raimu’s story about her hair is something I really relate to as mixed kid. It wasn’t my hair. It was my facial features. I’d try so hard to manipulate them with makeup so they’d look more white, but I finally came to this acceptance (like her) that I’ll never fully be one side. I’m glad my mom told me so long ago that she wouldn’t let me have plastic surgery. I’ve learned to accept my features, and they make me beautiful.

Lol, that's true. There are a lot of Nigerians in Tokyo. Most of the biracial people I met had a Nigerian parent. Jamaicans too, LOL. I met a biracial Japanese/Jamaican family in Japan as well. We're all over despite the small size of the island nation.

Wow, beautiful people and interview :) I am not black but I do have dark skin. I totally understand the experience and feeling with the stereotypes and discrimination/rasism as a dark-skin asian. Mixed-blood normally quite open-minded from what I observe, I can see the half Black-Japanese in this video are open regardless races and cultures. I know how you feel, I am Malaysian. raised and born in an environment surround by other races such as Malay, Indian and others minorities. I do know people who is a mixed too. It's acceptable and common in Malaysia. What i think is Japanese nowadays are getting open to accept other cultures slowly, it's a good start. To the half Black-Japanese, don't be sad tho, discrimination and racism are everywhere. You guys have the strengths which that others don't have. :)

NO, my parents did not meet during the war... but because of the war my mother was forced to abandon college and become a dancer in a Chinese club. My father was a musician . I’m not Japanese, but I am black Filipina, so I really relate to when she was talking about her hair being a bigger insecurity than her skin tone. It was like that for me as well, and it took a very long time to accept and love my curls and coils. Now, when fully stretched, my hair reaches my hips, but looks waist length. And I love it.

今、日本で問題なのは日本生まれあるいは日本育ちにハーフや外国人じゃなく、大人になってから日本に来て、日本文化を理解しようとしない外国人の方が問題。まあ、黒人（白人）とのハーフは肌の色や顔の違いが目立つが、目立つから有利に働いている部分もあることを誰かが言っていたね。アジア人とのハーフは、自分からハーフだといわない限り、気づかれないからね。白人と黒人のハーフは目立つからさまざまな思いがあるのだろう。

自信を持って生きて欲しい。日本人同士でも普段から細かいところからの偏見や差別がある。そういう人はスルーでいい。
日本でハーフがハーフだと認識されるのも今のうちだけじゃないかな？自分は鈍感だから日本語流暢だと相手がハーフである事にすら長いこと気づかなかった事あるし。今なら目立つっていう特権が使えるから今のうちにそのメリットを利用して楽しくやっていけばいいと思うわ。

I really appreciate the frankness of those interviewed, and I hope many parents of mixed race, Japanese or otherwise, watch this and embrace some of the advice for their kids. 平凡凡で何も無いよりは、幼少期から個性として出せる事は良いことなのかなと思います。
自分は100%日本人だけど、中学、高校までは本当に何もなくて…高校で努力して芸術科の大学出てデザイナーになれた時に始めて個性を持てたなと実感しました。まあ、職場に入って周りに圧倒されっぱなしなんですけど…
何も無い方が辛い場合もあるので生まれ持っての個性はポジティブに捉えてもろて 日々を楽しんでください。

I think one issue that many people have around the world is knowing that you can adapt to what’s different. People say that language or culture may be an issue, but if you truly love that person, and you are willing to spend the rest of your life together, you have another goal. That goal is to make sure you adapt to each other’s culture, learn each other’s language, and integrate what you both agree on. The reason why I wouldn’t want to be any other race than what I was born as is because my parents taught me that I don’t need to be like other people and focusing on myself will bring me success. When talking about discrimination, I’m lucky to have dealt with it only once. It’s all a matter of understanding that because I’m from one place, it doesn’t mean I can’t do the same as the other. Like I said, if there’s something you really want, you’ll go for it. For example, if you were becoming poor and you didn’t have any job, you’d do everything you can to make a job or find one because you don’t want to be poor. You can adapt to have both Japanese and your other native people like you. When it comes to people who don’t respect your race or culture, they simply don’t matter at all because they won’t look at the beautiful picture(you) as a whole instead of a part. As a, quite strange, analogy, you’re served a pizza in the full box, but when you open it, it’s only half of the pizza, you send it back to the maker because you expected the whole, and you think of the the half as the “other side” instead of the second part. That second part has the toppings, so it’s different. I think of Half Japanese people like this, “I envy Half Japanese and Half Black because they naturally learn something that most people don’t in the world. But I wouldn’t want to be Half because who I am now matters too. We’re all still human in the end.” Don’t believe me, but believe yourself. Be confident in yourself, be confident that others can change, try learning advanced Japanese past the average speaker, learn your other native language past the average speaker. Be as immersed in to Japanese culture speaking to Japanese, Be as immersed into your other native culture when speaking to others from that native, and you can already have an easy connection with some half because you’ve most likely been through the same treatment.

Maybe off topic, yet when I was in high school, I met an elementary Japanese language professor; she was a beautiful black lady with clear Japanese accent that my eyes widen on very first impression.

I am Scottish and white. I have been to Japan and I have a good Japanese friend who lives in Spain. This video was very interesting. The young people interviewed we beautiful both inside and out. I wish them every success and happiness in life and thank them for speaking so openly.

The 'United Kingdom' refers to a political union between, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Although the UK is a fully independent sovereign state, the 4 nations that make it up are also countries in their own right and have a certain extent of autonomy. I hope this clarifies the matter for you. I am assuming you are not from any of the four nations which make up the United Kingdom.

This was a great piece. I have a daughter with a woman of European decent and I see her dealing with some of the same issues of acceptance and lack of understanding that were expressed in this piece. Multiracial people have always had these issues everywhere in the world. The beautiful thing about this work is that you can literally see the world becoming smaller and more multicultural as you watch. Personally I loved Japan while I was there. I spent the majority of my time in Kyoto and found making friends there fun and easy.

Depends on where you plan to raise them. Raise them somewhere that is already a melting pot (i.e. U.S., Canada, Australia, Brazil, etc.) where they will be accepted and they'll fit right in and feel content. Be aware though that where you raise them will pretty much dictate and shape their personality, which you are ultimately in control of!

Being a "ha-fu" myself one half Japanese and the other American, plus, 90% of my life so far being lived in Japan, I had SO MUCH to relate to in all of what was said in this vid.
I've always harbored the aspect of, mainly due to my personal experiences in life (probably), all people treating others each for who they are in order to make a better world, and as I see throughout this film and especially its ending, my fellow Japan-resident ha-fus feel the same way even if they don't speak English (my point is: they may not be exposed to Western culture as myself, and focus on the individual instead of the multi-person community is often considered quite taboo in its own non-verbal sort of way here in Japan.)

I have half Japanese relatives, some look like they're not mixed but they have African american in their blood and I'm proud of all of them and love them very much!

In my opinion, Japan has its issues with color and difference of ethnicity. It is far from western challenges. In time I believe they can learn to love our people not just the things we have created. These young men and women will be an asset to Japan. The one woman's mother should be hugged by every person who liked this video. She taught her child to love her differences despite how her bubble may have treated her or made her feel.
I would love to see a video on Blacks and half Japanese in school events and festivities...

The curious fact is that they want to be accepted with western countries when they emigrate and they are not even welcoming to foreigners
I think Japanese are not to be reasoned with love but more so respect. I don’t think Japanese generally respect black people outside of entertainment value we bring. It’s no surprise that many of these mixed kids are all models, or some form of entertainment.
I think black parents need to be more sensitive of where they raising their mixed kids. It’s not enough for the non black parent to tel their child that they are beautiful. Black parents of mixed kids need to take their kids to face the reality of what it means to be black in this world and need to try to raise their children in black environments to provide them more confidence.
It’s crazy to be raising your mixed kid in Japan without any sense of their black side. Mixed kids who grow up with their black extended families or visit their black parents countries are way more level headed and confident than mixed kids who are raised solely in non black environment.

I never mentioned I'd had a bad experience with the locals that I had met during my trips in JP, and I hadn't. I was telling that I suppose they are not used to seeing foreigners, so they tend to steal a glance at you. That's it.
I don't see how you can draw such a conclusion about me having trouble going on a trip abroad not able to enjoy sightseeing.

I absolutely loved the documentary. I'm glad that the society is slowly starting to change in Japan. The one thing that I noticed is that the Japanese mom stated that African men would be polygamous which I found really disturbing since she is raising two halfback children and is installing these stereotypical/ racist beliefs in her kids.

I am African American and I must say that I am very proud of these individuals; They are indeed an inspiration to individuals going through similar experiences around the globe! I have seen mixed individuals from Europe & Asia compete at the Olympics and triumph! I feel so proud when I see them representing China, Japan, France & others - but looking like me "An African American"..
