SUPER helpful!! I've been racking my brain trying to understand the difference between pre and post-fader as a new "sound guy," and this has totally clarified it for me (without getting into too much jargon!). Thank you so much! Really appreciate the examples of practical use, too. 👌
Bro I had to drop a comment you have taught me more about this DAW then Presonus😂😂I've been back and forth through google searches all night about different tools, vsts, meanings behind certain terms, how to do this, how not to do this, and what happens if you do certain things with in the DAW. Every video I watch of yours I found everything I was looking for. I am a indie rap artist and since the COVID crisis all the studios are closed😬😪so I pulled out my interface, mic, and lap top so I could contenuing making music also decided to start learning more into mixing with your help I've gained alot of new knowledge just by watching your vids. Sorry for the long comment but shit😑it was very stressful until I watched your vids thanks bro🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽for giving out good information
Thank you so much!! It really means a lot that you’ve learned so much! If you do come up with any questions that I haven’t made something on already, just let me know! My videos are made based on users questions!
Thanks for creating this video! This was really helpful. I knew what pre vs. post fader did, but didn't any sense of how to apply them. It was really helpful to see the contexts of different uses and additionally the choice to switch like in the reverb case or the use of VCA to maintain balance when using parallel compression.
I normally just pre fade everything going into my bus/aux/return tracks because using post fader can really mess with maximizers, limiters, reverb or even compressors especially if you use a lot automation curves during the mix. It took me a while to figure out why suddenly some of my tracks would just start clipping or overdriving. It was because of using post fader.
I honestly cannot believe you don't have like 1,000 likes on this and all of your stuff. So clear, concise, to the point! I'm about to reel up my third one today and it's not even noon!! Thanx Tim!
Great work as always bro. I've just started watching your videos and I'm intrigued. Great explanation in all of them so far. And about your video on the presonus iostation 24c, kindly explain how to independently control the inputs with regards to line switching and phantom power. Please let Presonus know that we need another headphone jack in the front of the unit for the producer while the artist uses the one at the back. A splitter could probably be used but getting separate mix for each will be very difficult. Please address it in the full review for us
No, pre vs post is where the send gets it’s copy of the signal from. If it’s pre-fader, the level of the main fader does not effect how much of the copy signal is sent. If it’s post fader, the main fader WILL effect how much of the copy signal is sent.
It auto sets to -6, and as far as I know, that can't be changed right now. What you can do is Control Click or Command Click on the send level to snap it to unity.
It doesn't effect the panning of the main track, but if you have a send on something that is panned right, and the send is up the middle, you may hear a shift in pan location. What you can do is also pan the send to either the same side or to the opposite side for some cool width. Check out this video I made, ruclips.net/video/dugSIaQESXw/видео.html
Thanks for the video, but to BEGINNERS this video is too verbally technical. Maybe you don’t do videos for beginners, so my apologies if that’s the case.
I'll admit, this video is a little more advanced. I try my best to make sure that my videos can be understood by most, but I'll keep in mind that not everyone is at the same level of skill and knowledge. Thanks for the feedback
Wow just realised Studio One looks and acts very similar to Cubase. Nice!

@@TimTalksAudio Kind of what I was getting at with my "polling the crowd" comment in the recent past (elsewhere).
Holy crap I finally understand!! This is exactly what I needed. Thanks Tim!
Glad it helped!

Great lesson! You're a MASTER! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Finally I get it. Thanks!
pre fader is the loudness of the effect and post fader is how much signal you send? im new to this.

@@TimTalksAudio thanks mate cheers from uk!
@@lowag3144 cheers!!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks so which track in live band setting is best to set as Pre / post?
For headphone feeds, go with pre-fader!
TOO much for me to comprehend right now...
BUT... +1 points for new subscriber
+3 points for ALL ALERTS!... I look forward to learning from you!
Thanks for subbing
❤
Is the level of pre fader automatically at unity?
It auto sets to -6, and as far as I know, that can't be changed right now. What you can do is Control Click or Command Click on the send level to snap it to unity.
Bass guitar direct to interface, use pre or post fader??
If you’re just trying to record the bass, you don’t need a send at all. Just go direct into the interface to record.
does post fader affect panning
It doesn't effect the panning of the main track, but if you have a send on something that is panned right, and the send is up the middle, you may hear a shift in pan location.
