  • If you’re an artist you might have experienced art block before. Having an art block at some point is normal, you don’t have any inspiration anymore and feel like you want to draw something but keep making up excuses or start to overthink. What helps me sometimes is looking at older drawings…
I want to keep challenging myself and continue drawing because it’s always good to draw regularly and keep on practicing. So if you have any ideas for the next drawing please let me know in the comments below.

Have you ever experienced an art block before? If you have, maybe you can share some tips. Or if you have any interesting ideas to draw next I would love to hear them...

To me, drawing is the heart's emotion expressed by facial expression. I haven't picked up pencil n paper in many years. Your drawings put a smile on my face that my heart approves of. Much respect for your expressions.

I'm so glad to hear that my drawings inspire you. I hope you will pick up your pencil again after many years, maybe you should try drawing something again sometime.

Thank you for your video Emmy and for your insights which I always find invaluable. My greatest difficulty with sketching is to make the finished drawing more interesting to the viewer, whether that be to include appropriate shading or in finding more dynamic positions for the subject. Your wonderful videos are so helpful to me in resolving these problems.

Thank you for your kind words. To make you drawing look interesting or more realistic always think about the values (highlights midtones shadows)

Does it have to be a face?
I am obsessed with trees and the moon right now. I am not anywhere near your skill level. I am interested to see what your landscape of the moon behind a few trees would be. But obviously this is just a random suggestion. I am sure you will het much better ones.
I have been wanting to learn how to draw my cats. By to be fair. I only started drawing a few months ago and am teaching myself. There's so much I want to learn. And unfortunately, copying is not a skill I have. So I have to learn by trial and error. Or by adapting things in my own way. Which is definitely the longest way possible. Haha. But I suppose things are uniquely mine then. So there are ups and downs to this. 😊🤪
P.s. how do you fill in the shadows/dark parts/darker lines etc (I have no clue what the proper terms are) without then smudging them and selling them and having to go back over them a ridiculous amount of times?
And what paper would you suggest for the faber castell pitt graphite matt pencils if you have used them? Because I cannot get them to work right on any sketch paper that I have brought so far. And I have tried 3 different types. But the index card I brought the shades that come.out of just one pencil is amazing. On the sketch books paper pretty much all the pencil grades look the same shade for some odd reason.
Which means drawings have no difference in light to dark. Unless I work really hard at erasing and filling in and erasing etc. Whoch is a nightmare.
I need at least 100g weight paper and good quality as I border the paper with washi tape. And anything less and sometimes this weight the paper tears off with the tape.
I am not familiar with sketch books. But I am obsessed with the faber-castell pitt graphite matt pencils. They are all I will use.
I have just noticed you are using faber castell too. Just not the same set.
P.p.s. I have combined the pitt graphite matt with the 900 series. But generally I just use the pitt graphite matt

I do love to draw faces. Landscapes are interesting to draw too but it takes a really long time to draw with graphite. I did create a landscape with pastels and watercolors before. I recommend Strathmore bristol smooth paper. It's 270 gsm, if you use thinner sketching paper you won't be able to layer and shade as much as I do. I use Faber-castell 9000 graphite pencils for the smooth shading and faber-castell pitt matt pencils for the darker values and details. I don't like them as much for smooth shading but they are great for the darkest details.
You will learn and improve by trial and error so all you have to do is keep practicing...

There is a group photo I just came across with four characters in it. It was a very popular TV show here a long time ago. Very interesting characters in it. You could do something like this. Maybe you could even do maybe two children playing and laughing, A person from a different country maybe. Hopes this helps. I hope to take your class one day soon.
