God Seth deserved better it always bugged me that Vivian took her anger out on him when he was nothing but supportive and he was the one who apologized in the end. Being a strong powerful women doesn't mean you can't apologize to a man when you messed up.
this video had me rolling omg I love yall. Tbh Nico and the diversity were the only reasons I liked this movie too because the rest of it screamed white feminism to me. The kiss between Lucy and Amaya's random kiss without any foreshadowing or their relationship being revisited after was kind of like a "hey we are inclusive, like the movie" type of moment. It didn't feel genuine to me at least idk about how others felt. I liked the calling out of her Vivian's privilege but DAMN when will we please get Black leads who aren't just the liaisons of the white protagonist. I would've liked it better if Lucy was the lead tbh
I agree with all of this. It was based on a book written by a white woman and for her to be writing from the perspective of a black woman would not have been genuine. So I understand why it was this way, but the could have had black writers for the movie, to change it up.
@@giannastruck1258 I get that, I just wish they would make good book to movie adaptations written by POC with POC in the lead roles. and roles where its not about POC trauma/tired stereotypes bc that's so overdone. the moxie movie was an amazing concept, i just wish they would've switched the roles and had a minority as the lead. like clauida could've been the lead, it would have made sense that she started the rebellion considering the fact she has a strict mother, and would've made an interesting plot point.

To be honest, the movie and book works better with a white woman. All minorities can point out her white privilege to her. If main character was a poc, it wouldn't have an impact. Poc already know white people are privileged, the white girl needed to get called out.
Ya'll commentary was on pointtttt, literally had the same exact feelings and takeaways day I watched this! No one I knew seen it so they didn't understand my gripe with the film but yessss to everything! What's funny is they been promoting it as this film that's hella progressive but the story is still based on a white women's journey into feminism, which is problematic as so much of the internal issues within feminism is the erasure of women of color. What would have made it really hit would be Lucy as the main character !
First of all, thank you for watching and enjoying the video! I'm glad that we could somewhat represent how other people may have felt when they watched this movie. And I agree, let's start putting women of colour to the front!
@@TesexChristina ya’ll are good truly, made it easy to enjoy. Actually was refreshing how great your comments were, especially from a filmmaking perspective, I was like ohhhh! Okay I can get with this! And forsureee, I think the industry standards need to be abandoned! ,
Hi I think the reason why the main girl in the movie was white it's bc this movie is based on a book and the author of that book it's white so it would be very problematic if she wrote the story from a poc perspective, if you read the book you'll see that the movie is actually way more diverse, yet just like you I'm still waiting for a good feminist movie with a strong black women as the lead :)
moxie was disappointing (yet another film overlooking beautiful, intriguing characters of color for a largely boring white character who acts out and never sees real consequences) but bless that movie for leading me to your channel
That is true honestly, but the movie was based off a book written by a white woman. It wouldn't have been her place to write the book as a person of color when she was white. But still that is so understandable and the film had a lot more potential.
My guess is it's because they wanted to do a journey talking about learning privileges and feminine struggles. Having a boring white female would be better for a journey about learning of women's issues.
Tell me how barely anyone knows about the sista grrrl movement (a parallel to the riot grrrl movement) the sista grrrl movement was started for black women that didn’t feel like they couldn’t be apart of Kathleen Hanna’s riot grrrl movement
Thanks for sharing that. I feel like Riot Grrl is making a comeback but it's so important to include our Black sisters as well as Hispanic, and Asian and others. The riot grrl movement really fell off and didn't last bc of it's lack of diversity. The idea was more women in punk but punk was too busy being white and so was the riot grrl movement. It's refreshing to see Willow Smith making punk music and I hope bc she's a big name with a lot of exposure that she inspires more young Black ladies to break into the movement.
And this is the reason I didn’t watch it. I saw the trailer. Saw the black queen spit facts and knew the white cis woman was the main character. Like... miss really fought the entire time was harassed and racially abused and she’s supposed to ignore it. But lil miss white cis moxie gets ALL the credit after hearing some stories from her mum and taking advice from her melanited queen. Not to mention the ones who made the MOST noise were black/brown women.
I agree but I also see why people arent going crazy over this too. It made me mad to see but then I learned that the book was written by a white cis woman and it would've been really not her place to write from a POC's point of view. I get it completely though. I think they should've put more attention into their other characters including the trans girl who we only hear a few things from
I think movies with dark skinned Black women are way more important than a movie like this one. But in a nuanced way the idea of centring a white cis woman going through the journey of her eyes being opened, getting way too full of herself and then slowly coming back down off her pedestal could be a useful way to target those type of women and show them what they are doing.
I bet Claudia got so much hate but she had her own issues and pressure being a model minority. If they don’t address that in the movie... as her friend who claims to be a feminist for all women she didn’t even try to help. Btw this editing and your commentary made my morning!

i loved how Nico called her out on her bs after the dinner scene because a lot of great male interests in movies and shows are made doormats and just take whatever the girl says/does instead of standing up for themselves when they're treated badly
THANK YOU for addressing Lucy's weird reaction to Claudia getting suspended, like she was being all dismissive about it. Not enough people were pointing it out and talking about it but it really annoyed me how they had the other main POC character of the film just brush off the Asian girl getting punished or taking the brunt of the authority cracking down on what THE WHITE GIRL STARTED
One amazing thing about this movie is that they actually casted a REAL afro-latina in a latin role. Often times a latinas like her could only be casted as a black american women and never as a latina.
Perhaps this is me being charitable being a fan of the book but I interpreted Vivian's shortcomings as a much needed critique of white feminism since she was challenged for her blind spots throughout the movie. That being said I would absolutely watch an entire sequel about Lucy.

I love your reaction to him and vivian driving scene too haha. "I would literally do anything to be in her position, ask me what I would do." "What would you do?" "Anything to be in her position." The amount of relatablity, humour and wisdom here is just- *yes*
Edit- wait shit- I cannot just forget about the hair shaving IN BETWEEN the video 😭👏✨
They be like”your distracting the class” the only people distracted is your staff
I actually read the Moxie book before the movie came out for an English thing, and really liked the book. I thought it was good to point out that a lot of the criticism from the movie doesn't actually exist in the book. Also, Viv's character is vastly different. I recommend reading it, it is really fun to read.
I loved the hair change. That was so out of the blue!
