- Stellan Skarsgård gained critical acclaim for his portrayal of Boris Yevdokimovich Shcherbina in the 2019 HBO Chernobyl TV series, a tough and imposing man, very self-confident and moulded by the Communist Party. But the show doesn’t touch on the backstory that turned him into such a person, nor focuses on the specifics of how he worked in the liquidation, so let’s explore that story today.

Midnight in Chernobyl
From Chernobyl to Fukushima
My grandfather studied with Shcherbina at the institute. He described Shcherbina as a talented and honest person.
Sounds like him, thank you for providing some additional information :)
What do you think about what Russia is doing today?
@@RobertCraft-re5sf Well, in present days, Russia is degradating more and more

Boris Shcherbina was the hero The Soviet Union *DID NOT* deserve.
He didn't know much about nuclear reactors, but he did know a lot about concrete.
Must've come from laying all that pipe.
This right here, is why I look forward to Saturday evenings. So many new details you do not hear or see elsewhere, especially the pictures of his younger years. I have never seen these anywhere else. He truly was a remarkable man that did not shy away from responsibilities. I remember reading that he scolded the higher-ups; "You're all very good at blowing up reactors, but lousy at filling sandbags!" And had a general shovelling sand in his finest dress uniform along with some minister^^
Skasgård interpretation of the fellow trully made me interested in his character, so thank you so so much for this video!
I'm always looking forward to your content, and appreciate truly the opportunity to see a good research on the person I liked the most in the show!
Thank you so so much
I agree. Skarsgård is a superlative actor and complimented the role of Jared Harris.
Mate channels like yours are what make RUclips such a special place. Great content 👍
Oof. The winter war AND Stalingrad? Shaped his character indeed.
21:41 His life maybe said to be in dark but you brought up his work and life existence to light.
From how I see you telling of his story, his passion to see better quality for the party/country he served is truly outstanding in his own way I guess.
14:29 As usual people in power easily brush off responsibility when something wrong happen to lesser worker/rank to thrown into pit.
Truly appreciate the work you put in making this video at YT for people like me to... I guess.. hear it out or interested to know about.
I'm happy you enjoyed it :)
You're improving your content by some I can see!
Thank you!
Wow, imagine working for a living and be able to own a house. Luxurious.
And in 2024 the youth of the West still dream of this.
I still think you should start of series of channels all entitled that "________guy". Where you deep dive into various topics you find interesting
A dedicated public servant who worked towards the best interests of the People at his own expense.
Scherbina was laying that pipe - im sorry im sorry. For real great video and what a badass man. Respect
I don't know what kind of AI enhancing filters are used for the pictures, but they just look.. wrong.
Boris Scherbina my hero, an apparatchik who rose above his station in the party and life to do the right thing
I've no idea how it took me this long to realise Three Mile happened *before* Chernobyl. Guess I never really paid a lot of attention to the years 😅
Probably because it was a relatively minor incident
12:45 you accidentally copy and paste the text from the first quote onto the next two quotes so they don't line up with what you're speaking.
Excellent video otherwise. I saw new photos I've never seen before. Very well researched.
Forced into voluntary retirement. Because that makes sense.
there is more to it, something the hbo series doesnt tell...
Shot of vodka every time he says « secretary ».
Did soviet union have any position except 'secretary'?
Nuclear plants scare me tbh
I live in Gyumri right now, Leninakan previously. There are still buildings ruined by the earthquake here and there.
Hello Sir,
Again a very very informative video. You are improving your videos over the time. Glad to see the progress. We enjoyed watching your newest episode. Go on sir. You’re doing more than well. 💪
First to comment and also I really love your videos
He was lucky to survive his service during the Winter War. The hastily put together ski units of the Red Army were thrown into the Finnish forests with no clear plan to back them up if they met their objectives. Most were scattered after failing to surprise the Finnish forces and either killed in action or died of hypothermia. Perhaps Shcherbina was luckier than most of he was in an NKVD unit, as they were not used for combat operations, more as an ideological "military police".
Fascinating life.
19:35 Lol Let's clarify how the soviet politburo elections worked. The party selected one person and placed them on the a ballot... the voter had to vote for that person or not at all!
Let’s go new video
Love your videos!
Love these videos!
20:29 - The gopnik-like dance-moves by the guy in the red shirt had me rolling on the floor, LOL! The more professionally dressed guy with grey hair also had some sick moves. Thanks for making these videos mate, and respecting the persons you discuss, no matter if they were criminals, could be blamed for something or innocent - or something in between. They may have made bad decisions, but they are only human. Doesn't matter if Russian, British or American, we should all be friends. Yes, maybe I think like a child, I know politics can become profoundly complicated, but why not have one world government?
With climate change (if you even believe in that, but every scientific-minded person will), we have other issues at hand than dumb political debates.
Rest in peace Shcherbina, he seemed like a guy with good intentions, and thank you, Chernobyl Guy, from the bottom of my heart for yet another great mini-documentary.
You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed :)
The man with the grey hair is Boris Yeltsin, whom Shcherbina despised and would eventually become leader of Russia following the collapse of the USSR.
"but why not have one world government?"
Millions of Americans just fainted sprinting to their guns.
@@markusw7833It's not like it's super hard to acquire guns in some European countries, take the Czech Republic for example, since 2023 you can own any gun without a license, given that you have gone through a brief medical check up. In my country, Germany, it's much harder, you have to join a gun club, get trained, and eventually after 1-2 years you can get your license. You are still not permitted to carry the gun in any type of concealed way, that requires even more legislative bullshit, and money - completely unlike the Czech republic, where over 75% of gun owners have a concealed carry license by default.
@@williamkane In the US it's easier.
@@markusw7833 No doubt.
That Yeltsin clip was pretty good. :)
Fantastic content as always! Thank you for your time putting this together!
Actually a glass of cog-nack might be helpful in case of a heart attack.

My JeePs name happens to be Boris. Thanks for the history of the fellow. Cheers mate.
Did anyone else fast forward not caring whatever the dudes early life was like?
No. I was interested in all of it.
Wow. Just wow. Thts all u have to say.

What the fuck are you talking about bozo
To pronounce correctly, you have to start saying a 'sh' sound, and it finishes as a 'ch' sound. It's almost like a longer 'ch'.
