Ngl, this movie isn’t half-bad. It’s just that it’s hard to explain the Assassin’s Creed franchise to non-video game people which I think the target audience for this movie - in just 2 hours. There’s a lot going on in the movie which didn’t get to be explained fully because then again, it’s just 2 hours. Michael Fassbender killed it in this movie.
Also, imo, this movie has a better representation of the Bleeding Effect than the games. Callum was basically re-enacting every move Aguilar made - every punches and kicks he threw, every jump, every dodge and every step he took. It just makes sense how he would adapt to Aguilar’s move-set because he literally did all the actions. It’s much better than just lying down on the bed in the games and magically all the skills and abilities of their ancestors was passed down to them.
Also, fun fact - Callum Lynch is Arno’s descendant.

I’ve read somewhere the reason why they’re using the arm was because they didn’t want the animus to look similar to the matrix if Callum just sit in the chair.
Anyway there’s a deleted scene where the assassin prisoners were wearing their ancestor’s outfit, and yes you met all of them in previous games. Also not sure if you notice but Arno was there when Callum broke the arm and their ancestors were standing around him. Meaning he’s his decendant.

The film is definitely style over substance.
The girl's name is Sofia Rikkin. Her father was Alan Rikkin. If you remember AC1, he was present there right in the end behind the glass, when Vidic and Lucy found where all the "treasures" were and he wanted Desmond killed but Lucy convinced him and Vidic that he might be useful to them. So in this movie they kinda killed Vidic's boss but he was so rarely brought up in the following games that very few even remember about him.
But you're right, they basically did Desmond and Lucy, but with no chemistry or interesting personalities. They were kinda emotionless. Desmond and Lucy were charming and cute, even in the first game. To me the Assassin's Creed's main strength is its characters. If you can't make them interesting, then the whole story becomes silly or boring. I would have loved to see Kristen Bell playing a live-action version of Lucy instead, if they simply adapted Desmond's story. I'm sure she wouldn't be against returning if they had a solid plan for her character for the movies and gave her a proper send-off.
The concept of "violent bloodlines" was weird, considering that the games never focused on that, it was always about Order (Tyranny) vs Chaos (Freedom) and what serves best to achieve Peace (if it's even a possibility or a Utopia). I guess they looked at the concept of the ancestors and how they were all assassins, and decided to look at it from a completely different perspective. But even still, they're making it look as if the Assassins are programmed to kill by their nature, when it fact it is always about personal choice (Nothing is True and Everything is Permitted). Maybe they just didn't do enough research.
Trivia: The chinese lady using the foot-blade was apparently the descendant of Shao Jun, but she had 0 lines so you had no way of knowing it to properly appreciate it or even care about her.

It’s a really well directed film the action scenes and the cinematography the set designs and costumes are brilliant the director also directed both fastbender and Marion cotillard in a very good Macbeth film in 2015 a year previous to this film coming out.
I feel like the reason they did the robotic arm animus is because it’s more “cinematic” than the video game animus chair which is very heavily matrix inspired and I think they wanted to avoid that comparison so they tried something new unfortunately they did too many cuts back to the robotic animus scenes rather than letting the period scenes play out. It’s easily one of the better video game movies on a pure artistic and film making level.

People on here already answered the practical reason for the robotic arm, but in-universe, that Animus was an experimental model that was going off of the theory that, if the person hooked into the Animus were able to mimicking the movements of the ancestor at the same time they were experiencing the memory, it would help synchronization with the target memory faster and more efficiently than just sitting in a chair and viewing a VR simulation. So it had a justification in the actual lore.

You mentioned that it's beautifully shot, the director and DP are the same from 2015s Macbeth, Justin Kurzel and Adam Arkapaw, which is in my opinion one of the most beautiful films ever shot.
The robotic arm makes sense both from a movie stand point and for plot, seeing a dude in a chair being static isn't very entertaining and it has been made already in The Matrix, and in this version of the animus both your body and brain are being stimulated and the bleeding effect makes more sense this way than the videogame animus, and he isn't running or grabbing anything, that's what the arm is for, don't know why you were so put off by it to be honest, I don't personally have a preference but it's more believable.

1:13 funny enough Star Wars as been doing this since 1977 where basically everything from novels, cartoons, and games are regarded as canonical. Of course theres some games that dont line up perfectly or gdt retconed by future media but for the most part its all interconnected.
But yeah with AC you can easily benefit from coming up with a whole new assassin allowing the film to be canonical without having much connection to the story of the games. Ubisoft of course have there own little connected universe going on with Assassins Creed, Watch Dogs, Far Cry etc.

    •  8 месяцев назад

Not really, pre Star Wars Disney the expanded universe wasn't techincally canon, tho it did had continuity between itself. Lucasfilms had two different departments: A continuity one that made sure that new media didn't contradict past media, and a canon department that esentially managed the official canon, which was: The six movies and the Clone Wars tv show.

    • @route77productions
      @route77productions 8 месяцев назад

If you go back through some of your recordings of Black Flag, you should see references to Alan Rikkin should show up in some of the current day exploration you were doing at Abstergo. I vaguely remember Sophia, his daughter, being referenced at some point in the storyline as well, so neither her, nor her father, directly appear in the games. I suppose it's possible that Sophia Rikkin and Warren Vidic were each working on a version of the animus in parallel and while Warren's was mostly an internal experience, perhaps Sophia felt that the external, more animated experience would produce better results somehow. Who knows...just spit-balling ideas. I also remember references to multiple Apples of Eden in the games, so perhaps the one found with Columbus in the movie was simply one of the many that seem to be floating around out there.
I'll admit that when I went to the theater to watch this, I had reasonably high hopes and while maybe it didn't live up to what many of us diehard AC fans may have hoped for, I still appreciated it as a reasonably good interpretation of what we grew accustomed to in the video games. Then again, I tend to approach these crossover movies with a measure of skepticism anyway... Looking forward to seeing you dive into Origins!
