Tamar was one of the Bible's heroines. She risked her life to make sure that the lineage of Judah continued. Her first husband died young. Her second, his brother, made a big mistake and he died. The third brother was too young. So, Tamar risked her life to get pregnant directly from Judah. She could have been stoned to death for that. But, convincing Judah to show evidence that he was the father, Tamar was saved and her twins, the ancestors of Jesus, were born. That's why she is mentioned in the first chapter of the New Testament in the lineage of Jesus. She fulfilled God's providence.

Yes, this whole story is primarily about Judah messing up and injecting Canaanites into the lineage to the Messiah. God had to intervene and prevent it happening and Tamar was a major part.
Judah should have gotten someone like Tamar for himself in the first place.
