This song has double meaning. The song "Europa" is a story about a grand diva singer performer during XX century. Although, she was adored by audience, everything went to hell when the WW II started. After the war, the society was devasted, suffering poverty and hunger. The diva arose from the ashes like the Phoenix bird. Mónica uses this story as a metaphor of her own personal life. Mónica had been fighting with her record company for many years for artistic control. In 2001, while her brother had a terminal illness, she wanted take care of him during her brother last few months of life. The record company threatned Monica that they would sue her if she did not work on her new record "Bad Girls". Finally, Mónica had it with the record company and in 2002, she left the music scence for six years until was able to obtain complete control of her music. The result was her album "Tarántula" with the first single "Europa" For Mónica, it was like starting all over again, just like the diva who started all over again and arose from the ashes after WWII. Mónica is not very popular, but is a high caliber artist. To understand her music, you need to read her lyrics, read about her life and take into consideration when her songs were released. Check out her video "Jamás" and "Perdida" from her album "LUBNA" a conceptual album based of a book of short stories with a common denominator of LUBNA, the sea goddess. Their other songs from the album without video worth listening to. Mónica spent 7 years preparing and self-financed the album. LUBNA is a masterpiece.

Mónica: "So the story about the character, she ends up, well, like as you can see it through the performance, completely unhinged. Unhinged because, from being one of the most important artists from that nation, she turns into nothing after going through war. So, of course, the song is narrated from the postwar, which might be worse than war itself, you know? When a country has to rebuild itself and come back to what it was. Of course, there's no better way to end the song as unhinged as the character." This was the first song she composed after not composing or singing for a few years (let's say between 2001-2008, with a few occasional appearances every now and then). I'm gonna recommend you another live performance she did back in October of 2000, precisely on that same stage. This one is "Desátame" from her tour Minage. It's such a good live performance.
