Wearing the old ones under the new ones could make wearing the shoe very uncomfortable and it could lead to blisters or other injury that could end a dancers career, or at least halt it temporarily and in a very competitive field like ballet it could actually be career ending. Even wearing new ones without the old ones could end up being bad which is why most of the time performers who already have a set way of doing things have such a hard time changing those habits and doing something new.

I just find the 'maybe she can't afford them' comment hilarious. Pointe shoes cost hundreds of dollars, plus the cost of other supplies like elastics, ribbons, sewing supplies, apparel (leotards, tight, skirts) costs hundreds of dollars, hair supplies and make up are costly too, toe pads cost a few dollars. If she can afford all that other stuff toe pads would be nothing. Dancers have very strong, personal preference for what works best for them. She obviously prefers and does well with what she has, even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else.😊

It's been decades since I was en pointe, but the toe pads I loved (mind you, there wasn't that much to choose from) were a really soft, thin leather with fleece in them.
That was so sweet of you. It’s hard to find toe pads in my size, what with my huge pontoons I call “feet”. But I’m always glad when I do, gotta stockpile as much as I can and have one emergency reserve pair.
It's 25 years in the future, and Maya's just given what will always be remembered as a bravura final retirement performance as a principal ballerina with (insert name of world-renown major ballet company here). After taking her final bows, Maya leaves the stage and goes to greet & receive audience well-wishers in the theater lobby. A girl whom Maya had earlier spotted in the audience goes up to congratulate her and after both exchange pleasantries, from out of no-where Maya produces a tiny velvet bag and hands it to the girl saying "These are my lucky toe pads. Since I was a student your age and throughout my career they have only brought me good luck,...And now I give that good luck to you !"
