Part 3: • Jemele Hill on Why Bla...
Part 1: • Jemele Hill: Jacob Bla...
    --------
In this clip, Jemele Hill starts out by reacting to Akon's comment about feeling like Black people in America are held back in some ways by their focus on slavery. She explained that the legacy of slavery is so deep in the country because it still exists, and Jemele gives the example of George Floyd being executed in the streets. Jemele also spoke about Germany apologizing for their past and not glorifying Nazis with statues, while the U.S. has monuments and statues for white supremacists. Moving along, Jemele expained what she feels it would take for the U.S. to move past racism, which she thinks can happen with a meaningful apology and undoing of past mistakes. She also addressed reparations, which you can hear more about above.

I’ve always resisted the calls that Vlad is a “culture vulture.” But his answer about his education making him millions left a bad taste. Vlad made millions because he got an education, had ambition AND Black people welcomed you into an industry where you could intimately collaborate with highly talented Black artists to reach your full potential- hence Vlad TV. But here’s the problem, it’s very rare for the flip side to happen; for a Black person with an education, that has ambition, and is actually welcomed into a predominately White industry that allows said Black person to collaborate with talented white counterparts & experts in order that they reach their full potential. That is the double standard. That’s why there isn’t many Black engineers in Fortune 500 companies or Black CEOs of major corporations. White people don’t want to let Black people in the door to reach their full potential writ large. That’s the discrimination and it’s based on the legacy of slavery, Jim Crow, and racism.

He doesn’t have to answer to anybody up top cause he is the CEO of his own company. We as black ppl gotta hold ourselves accountable that we don’t start our own shit. We can start our own film companies, we can start our own factories, we can start our own supermarkets. But we have to execute. You see what happened when a nigga tried to have his own platform and put his city on the map (r.i.p Zachary stone aka Zachtv). That hate, jealousy, & envy certain ppl feel when somebody is doing something positive and making a difference kills us fr.

Exactly. That's like telling a person of Jewish descent to just get over the holocaust or a person who has been sexually assaulted to just get over the tramatizing act. This isn't something you can just let go. I guess it's easy to say it to a black person but tell that to a Jewish person and see how they look at you. I see where he is sort of going with it but it's not that easy. You can't just tell a soldier who has experienced countless bloodshed in war to just get over his experiences. You have to possess some sort of empathy for the person whose experienced tragedies or have been through them. I get what Akon is saying I just think his wording is poorly constructed. Instead of saying "let go" it may be better to say do the best you can to move on.

Its just called "indentured servitude" now. Slavery is rampant in Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Slavery was here a long time before America was, and its still going on. But, I do think America needs to own up to its involvement. I'm for reparations. But, everyone already knows the government isn't gonna just cut a check to every black person here. However it's(hopefully) done though, isn't going to make every black person happy, cuz someone always feels like they are getting screwed. That could lead to more issues in the black community. Those that don't get reparations are gonna be mad at the ones that do. If a reparations act was created, there would be stipulations/requirements that would have to be met to "qualify". Not everyone would meet them all...

Nobody has said anything about Finical litarcy . So just like giving anyone money, if they don’t know how to make it work for them, they will be back in the same precaution just with more liabilities. Some might make generation wealth from it but the masses will not. That’s what needs to be talked about as well as giving the money .

RUclips Rich Dad Poor dad and I invite you to read his books and video... I might had misspelled that but I know the three educations , and most super educated people don’t: Professional, Academic, and Finical Literacy.. the school system will teach you the first two but very little in the third ... or how to make money work for you .... not you work for it

It's weird that the people commenting on systemic racism, oppression, etc. are always the ones that supposedly made it out of the "system" and have never experienced these issues. To sit and here and say that things are the way they were 50 or 60 years ago is disrespectful to those who lived during those times. For this system to be designed to hold back black people, it sure is failing. Regardless of whether the system exists or not, the system doesn't have to work. Hard work defeats discrimination. I'm a black guy and I know reparations aren't coming. I'm a black man and I know we can do this without reparations. Giving us reparations isn't gonna change ones mindset on how to use money or resources effectively. How are we gonna tear down this "system" when we're unknowingly supplying oil to the engine. Completely ripping out this "system" will not change people's opinions of us, good or bad. We need more stable households, a frickin father around, better schooling, etc. The NBA and NFL could be completely shut down by the players if they refused to play until the owners lobbied to get a bill on the house floor for reparations or reduced college education. But what they doing, playing ball while sending out a video message or skipping one game. At some point we have to look in the mirror and educate ourselves because expecting reparations from this government is like fucking for virginity. Hell they arguing right now over a corona bill that would statistically go to more whites than blacks. Give me concrete evidence of one "system" in place that disallows a black man or woman from becoming great and building generational wealth?

I believe in what Akon was saying. Reason being most people believe freedom came from what Lincoln wrote, but history told you revolutions freed people. This is not only true in the Islands, it was also true for France, Russia and other European countries. We won't get respect until we tear up the concept of "the Rabbit Proof Fence ". You can't tell people to respect you when you don't invest in self. Our African Ancestors used animal totems to remind us what we see in nature. The fight is real and it will continue.

  • @DM-jn3zo

As a black american I'm less concerned with slavery and more concerned with everything that happened afterwards like red-lining, jim crow, the prison system, etc etc. People point to slavery as a scape goat. Like just because your ancestors weren't slave owners doesn't mean you're excluded from the conversations about what happened afterward and the systems that your ancestors benefitted from. A lot of race riots involved largely immigrant populations as well.

Akon, the past still exists due to the slow evolution of systematic racism over time. And today, it's deeply rooted within the culture. We see it in the legal system, political system, educational system, medical system and even inside people's minds in the form of self hate (which many are unaware of it's presence inside of them.) To forget, is to fully accept that we are not human. And that we don't deserve care and healing.

I believe what Akon is saying. We as blacks need to stop focusing on slavery and all the past. Most of us born post 1965 don't know anything about slavery or Jim Crow. Racism will always be here. We've come a long way as a people and need to stop even looking at the past. We need to focus on living morally, work hard, and have faith that we will be okay. No one will feel sorry for us.

The first question that i like to ask is why are the descendants of Africans(the African Americans)who never experienced slavery, can get a job that pays with money, attend universities, own businesses, become billionaires if they focus and work hard on it like so many African Americans who have done it before may feel they are entitled to reparation when in fact none of them have anything to do with slavery that happened way before they were born? Secondary some of these people need to stop making people feel sorry for them getting angry sometimes hating both Africans and whites of today who were not there. Finally, slavery didn't only happen to Africans but sadly it's how all the empires were built by using some of the people this is why Africa is still strong today. Forgive me for my way of thinking but it's just the truth, so if reparation has to be taking place then it is right to say that the European elite (the British Empire, French Monarchy, Latin) the Kingdoms/Empires of Africa and Jews who funded it all are responsible. Visiting Africa will help a lot from this mentally slavery, ONE LOVE, ONE FAMILY!🙏
